The conclusions reached in this work will allow scholars, hymnologists, and hymn singers to explore the social and musicological influences on hymn tune writing, how long it took for texts to acquire a "fixed tune," how tastes in hymn tunes change ever so slowly, and how many delightful tunes found in the core repertory of the 19th century have been dropped from today's repertoire.

Gorgeous photos of gorgeous chickens!

Great book for people who love chickens! It's all photos, with very little to actually read, so don't buy it looking for information. But if you enjoy looking at amazing breeds of chickens, you'll love this (I'd love to see his pictures in a book about chickens as pets--few people appreciate the affectionate, endearing, and comical nature of these birds). If you DON'T like chickens you will probably find the pictures somewhat horrifying, as some breeds are really strange-looking (think the chicken equivalent of bulldogs or shar-peis, or other weird "purebred" mutations). This is a really fun book by an extremely talented photographer.

Amazing diversity beautifully photographed.

This is not an important book, but it is very enjoyable. It introduces us to the amazing (and, for me, hitherto unexpected) diversity among different types of chickens. It is a wonderful tribute to the variety and beauty that can be developed by either natural selection or selective breeding. Or, if you are creationist in your outlook, it is a wonderful example of the Creator's whimsy. The book is mostly photographs; there are some some brief descriptions of the types photographed, and a little general background text - but basically, it is a photography book.

French impressionists had fervent friends and loyal supporters. Chief among their promoters was Paul Durand-Ruel, an art dealer who bought their pictures steadily even when he wasn't able to sell them. Then there was Victor Chocquet, a collector who maintained a 15-year friendship with Cezanne and purchased many of his canvases. In this miscellany of essays and articles, some of which are translated from French for the first time, noted art historian Rewald (The History of Impressionism looks at various Impressionists' personal and familial relationships. While most of the pieces are marginal or slight, the graceful writing and an abundance of illustrations hold the reader's interest. One essay limns Parisian journalist Edmond Renoir, brother of the painter, who wrote a glowing review of Auguste's first one-man show. Other articles deal with Degas's inventive realism in racetrack and cafe scenes, unjustly forgotten French artist Achille Emperaire and Cezanne's tug-of-war with his authoritarian father.

Those with an interest in these subjects are certainly familiar with Rewald's monumental studies, The History of Impressionism (1946) and Post-Impressionismfrom Van Gogh to Gau guin (1956) as well as, to varying degrees, with his numerous monographs and exhibition catalogs. His essays and articles may be the least well known, and, thus, we are most fortunate to have 18 of them brought together in these companion volumes. Combining short pieces with a number of substantial ones, some of which have never before been translated from French, they treat a wide variety of topics and artists, with a significant number devoted to Cezanne and to Degas. Whether in the two longeston "Choquet and Cezanne" and "Theo Van Gogh as Art Dealer"or in the 16 shorter articles, Rewald's love for his subjects is conveyed by a meticulous attention to his material and by a lucid and direct style. Insightful and Entertaining

Very nice supplement to Rewald's other books on Impressionism with some essays and insights into artist's relationships with dealers and other artists, some material not covered in any other books so I would recommend it highly.

A Rewalding Experience

If you have a great love for Impressionist painting and want to know about the artists and the people that surrounded them you will enjoy this book. Mr. Rewald had previously written very in-depth books concerning the histories of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. This book is a collection of essays concerning the Impressionists and does repeat some of the information contained in Rewald's "History Of Impressionism" but also gives a more detailed look at some topics in that book, such as Cezanne's relationship with his father and his friendships with the collector Victor Chocquet and with his fellow (and pretty much unknown) artist Achille Emperaire. There is also an essay about Paul Durand-Ruel, the dealer who stuck with the Impressionists through the early years when you basically couldn't even give their stuff away and there is a short essay about the oldest (and least well-known) Impressionist, Camille Pissarro. Pissarro pretty much lived a life of poverty until he was in his 60's but had a very fulfilling artistic and personal life (he was happily married and had many children) and his modesty and easygoing personality enabled him to get along with his fellow artists and even to be somewhat of a mentor to the notoriously difficult Cezanne. I would say that this book is not for the person who is going in with no previous knowledge of the artists and the movement, but if you already know a bit and want to learn more or if you have read other books by Mr. Rewald you will not be disappointed. For those of you who are new to Mr. Rewald I think you will enjoy his style of writing. He writes with the descriptive flair of a novelist and he does not use art-world graduate school style jargon. If you really want to immerse yourself in the world of these great artists I would suggest you also check out Mr. Rewald's "History Of Impressionism" and his excellent biography of Cezanne.

This collection offers what it advertises, 30 years of Rolling Stone covers, plus pithy insights and glib vignettes. The covers tell as much about rock history as the commentary from the expected cast of RS scribes and hangers-on. Very early covers were in black-and-white, wrapping a newsprint tabloid featuring articles and reviews redolent of smug, anticommercial hipness. Over time, the attitude eroded, and color covers featured fewer scruffy rockers and more magnificently quaffed celebrities du jour. In short, the covers reflect the drift of RS's focus from music to film, TV, politics, . . . whatever. And still, the "book" is mostly rock 'n' roll. Where else can one see Janet Jackson and Jennifer Anniston naked and Bill Clinton and Woody Allen clothed (good editorial decisions, those), always very well photographed? Buy this for the flash and the history, and ignore anything Pete Townshend or Jann Wenner has to say in it. Aging baby boomers will probably like it most, but it should appeal to pop fans of all ages. Mike Tribby

The Perfect Coffee Table Book!

In the words of Mick Jagger to Rolling Stone, "You set the tone of a magazine by the cover - that's very important". He is correct. From issue #1 of Nov. 1967, John Lennon launches Rolling Stone in war garb and continues to grace more covers with and without the Beatles. "The Complete Covers" is a time machine of photographs (most from acclaimed photographer Annie Leibovitz) reminding us of the issues that we faced and the climate of the music. We can watch our rock heroes get older with us and witness the new birth of music groups over again. Politics are always included at critical time periods and, of course, our more liberal movie stars are here to set another kind of tome for the period. Although ending in 1997 with the cover of 'Women In Rock', you can bet that Rolling Stone gives us another in 2027. Enjoy!

The cover alone forfiets the ability of this book to rest upon the coffee tables of most. Yes, we all understand the sociological insight the editors have leapt to with the twin placement of a Scraggly Alice Cooper on one side and a Demonic M. Manson on the other -- but the book is not a pantheon to demon music, so why put these two as the only options to show the world what the last thirty years of entertainment were all about. Amazon shows an alternate cover with a peaceful J. Dylan on the cover (my guess is the parallel would have his dad on the flip side of the book). While also not exactly genius-level insight, it would still be a heck of a lot more presentable than the tome shipped to me. ONE BIG AAAACK.

The rococo style was among the primary artistic contributions of the eighteenth century. Its manifestations throughout Europe have been comprehensively acknowledged and chronicled, but its influence in America, where it was probably the century's crowning design achievement (commonly referred to as the Chippendale style), had never been thoroughly examined. It was a lavish taste that found surprisingly fertile ground in the colonies, where affluent members of society, rejoicing in their hard-won prosperity, strove to adopt London fashions. The exhibition, "American Rococo, 1750–1775: Elegance in Ornament" was organized by The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the latter's motivations emanating from the desire to bring an exhibition of American Chippendale furniture to a city where such objects have always been in short supply.

The book includes chapters on European origins and the American manifestations of the rococo, a brief discussion of firearms, and architecture, and medium-based explorations of objects made of paper, silver, wood, iron, glass, and ceramic. [This book was originally published in 1992 and has gone out of print. This edition is a print-on-demand version of the original book.]

"American Rococo, 1750-1775" is an interesting, beautifully illustrated book on a fascinating period in the history of American design. Well written, informative chapters deal with silver, trade printing, furniture, architectural and decorative carving, and other disciplines. I've enjoyed this book for years, and still am pleased to own it. For people who are interested in American art, craft, and design from the mid-18th century, it is well worth seeking out.

Turning film or TV scripts into novels is a peculiar literary subgenre. But it's not just a recent phenomenon-King Kong (1933) being an early example. To capture the scope and examine the idiosyncrasies of this form, Larson (Film Music from Around the World, Borgo Pr., 1987) divides the book into three sections: a brief introduction, short interviews with 50 contemporary practitioners, and an immense bibliography, organized by film, book title, and author. Throughout, Larson is amazingly thorough and always candid about the form's limitations. However, the high price combined with the fact that many of these books are just marketing tools with short shelf lives recommend this only for larger collections.

Films are often based on novels, but sometimes novels are written based on films. Author Larson, who has written several books on film and literature, covers two kinds of materials: novelizations based on the screenplay of a movie or TV script and original novels based on the characters, stories, and settings of a film or TV series.

In the first section of the book, Larson discusses such issues as authorship, quality of writing, time constraints (many writers have not even seen the final cut of the movie!), and contractual arrangements. Here we learn that novels based on TV series such as Dr. Who, Twilight Zone, and Star Trek are the most prolific in this field, and that novelizations based on screenplays that were themselves based on novels are fairly common. The second section, "Viewpoints," contains interviews with 50 writers such as Piers Anthony and John Jakes, who share their experiences and opinions on the creation of novelizations.

The third part is a bibliography of more than 2,500 novelizations, arranged by title. Abbreviations are used to designate published screenplays (in order to differentiate these from novelizations), "photoplay editions" (novelizations of silent or early movies), children's and young adult novels, and television series or films. Each citation notes title; author; author of the screenplay, play, or characters from which the book was adapted; publisher; and date. Larson has also provided a separate bibliography by author. There are cross-references and notes on pseudonyms. The book concludes with an index to subjects, titles, and authors found in the text of the first two sections.

Comprehensive or not, this reference work is the only one of its kind; it will be useful for libraries with collections in film and television, genre literature, and popular culture.

I feel like people may be turned off from this book due to its age (most publications are a few decades old already), or feel the book is outdated. Yet fro well under $4 the book is quite a steal; the 1986 version I purchased has definitely stood the test of time, and is still very relevant. The last chapter of the book is devoted to "Today" (which is good since the book was published years before the Tiananmen Square protests, as well as other contemporary issues) albeit the chapter is one of the longest. In the preceding chapters, the authors focus on the art of China, from the beginnings of empire to the establishment of the Republic of China. Book is divided into chapters: The Prehistoric Period, Ancient China, The Founding of Empire, The Han Dynasty, The Northern Wei,Sui,T'ang Dynasties, The Sun,Yuan Dynasties, The Ming Dynasty, The Ch'ing Dynasty, The Republic of China, Contemporary China, The Arts in China Today. Thus, the book does give a good survey of Chinese art and is highly informative: basically, half the books is devoted to art in China before the rise of the Republic shortly after the turn of the century, while the other half is devoted to both contemporary issues/historical analysis, and modern art.

Book is a heavy hardcover, printed on thick paper, and literally bursting with good quality images: 362 illustrations including 347 color plates. Truly a steal for the price; great guide to Chinese art, as well as a general guide to Chinese history. Great addition to any library for the price, great for any lovers of Asian art/culture/history!!

"The Art of Zen" is a beautiful, beautiful book and has taken its place on my read-again-and-again bookshelf. The 200+ page book is not only packed with the history of zen in Japan as exemplified by the major zen monk artists but complemented by many examples of their art. The history is divided into seven major periods that discussed the political and cultural climate of Japan as well as the philosophic perspective of Zen Buddhism.
There are extensive biographies of each of the major monk artists with examples of the work and, often times, their poetry. For example, the death poem of Ryonen, one of zen nuns, reads, "In the autumn of my 66th year, I've already lived a long time- The intense moonlight is bright upon my face. There's no need to discuss the principles of koan study; Just listen carefully to the wind outside the pines and cedars."
In addition, Addis brings an artist's eye to the paintings and his commentaries on technique, execution and innovation are enlightening (no pun intended)and help to explain how zen seeks to express the "inexpressible."
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Zen, in art, in the Japanese culture or with a desire to better understand the view of life seen by awakened men and women.

Eye popping popups

The popups are amazing, huge and very impressive. Little boys will love them. I like to collect popup books, so my main interest is in the quality of the popups which is very very good.

Buy the book if you have young buy. He will be sure to be delighted.

I am buying several copies to give as gifts at Christmas time to my young relatives.

Not just for boys!!

This book is a GREAT pop-up book. My 3-year-old twin daughters fell in love with this book in speech therapy and I was more than happy to finally find a copy of it here at Amazon.com!! Highly recommend for any little ones.

Fantastic book - but don't open without some preperation....

I gave this to my 4 year old son for christmas. He and his 5 year old sister opened it together and when the first page unfolded, it looked like a tarantula the size of a small dog was attacking them. My daughter struck it in self defense as she screamed and backed away, and my son ran and hid behind our easy chair. For those of you with little ones, it may be a good idea to open it from a distance, and slowly, the first time around.
After the initial fright, and my showing them the bugs are made of paper and getting them to actually touch each one so they knew they weren't real, they are absolutly enthralled with the book. Each of the bugs are very cleverly designed. I can't see this as anything but a big win for any kid.
