A fantastic book!!
By Janey
This is an awesome book. It was written by the author, with the International Spy Museum, from where I assume most of the pictures come. The book is extremely attractive, colorful, and full of photos. Like a scrapbook, each page is a different color.

The book discusses different spies--male and female--throughout the years, including stories about carrier pigeons, the Navajo code talkers, different operations, spy rings, etc. There are so many unknown and unusual stories in this book!--If I were talented, I would want to delve further into any of them and build up a story around it. Like the horse who was hid in the upstairs library. The pigeon who persevered although blind and crippled. Or the wooden carving of the U.S. seal given to the ambassador as a gift by adoring children--which secretly hid a listening "bug."

You will enjoy this book. It is the most fantastic book I know about spying--and I don't even like history!

Excellent pictures, interesting info, but ok calendar.
By Stephen
The Avatar 2012 Wall Calendar is a must for any Avatar fan. The pictures are absolutely amazing and real high quality. Also there is a little paragraph at the bottom of each page that tells a little fact or chronicles the story of the movie. I also bought the 2011 calendar when it was a couple dollars so I could get more high quality pictures.

The setup of this calendar is different from other calendars. On the top half there is one big picture, and then on the bottom half there are two smaller pictures on top of the calendar part with all the boxes. This is great if you're buying this for the pictures and not so great if you're buying this for the calendar part because to be able to fit the two smaller pictures, the calendar part is shrunken. It is a little harder to read and there isn't much room to write stuff. But I bought this calendar for the pictures; I never write things in the boxes so it didn't bother me that much.

Yes, this is a 16 month calendar so it does the last four months of the previous year. The only thing is it crams them all onto one page so you have to get real close to it to see the numbers and unless you write microscopically, then you won't get more than a word or two in there. So basically, this is a 12 month calendar.

There is one thing that I am puzzled about. On the picture for this calendar there is a little purple bubble that says it comes with a glow-in-the-dark poster. And unless they consider one of the pages or the front cover a poster, it didn't come with one. I was expecting a little 11X17 paper poster that I could frame or something. Not a big deal, but I was looking forward to having another piece of memorabilia from this great movie.

Should you buy this calendar? If Avatar captured your imagination and earned its place as one of your favorite movies, then absolutely YES!! If not, then you won't find this exciting.

The pictures in this calendar are very beautiful. I like them very much. I especially like that the pictures for September are love scenes between Jake and Neytiri. That month will be my 1 year anniversary with my girlfriend who I met because of Avatar :)

(The language I'm speaking up there would be Na'vi, the language spoken in Avatar. That's how much of a fan I am lol. For the record though, Na'vi IS a real language that one CAN learn and use for communication.)

Bad picture quality
By jacksparrow
For such a cool idea and such an awesome movie, the picture quality of the calendar is really really bad. One of the best parts of Avatar is its amazing visual quality, but this calendar did not do it justice. Any other big Avatar fan (which you must be if you are wanting to buy an Avatar calendar) will notice.

Jubal Early: Robert E. Lee's Bad Old Man, by Benjamin Franklin Cooling III

In Jubal Early: Robert E. Lee’s Bad Old Man, a new critical biography of Confederate Lieutenant General Jubal Anderson Early, Civil War historian B.F. Cooling III takes a fresh look at one of the most fascinating, idiosyncratic characters in the pantheon of Confederate heroes and villains. Dubbed by Robert E. Lee as his "bad old man" because of his demeanor, Early was also Lee's chosen instrument to attack and capture Washington as well as defend the Shenandoah Valley granary in the summer and fall of 1864. Neither cornered nor snared by Union opponents, Early came closest of any Confederate general to capturing Washington, ending Lincoln's presidency, and forever changing the fate of the Civil War and American history. His failure to grapple with this moment of historical immortality and emerge victorious bespeaks as much his own foibles as the counter-efforts of the enemy, the effects of weather and the shortcomings of his army. From the pinnacle of success, Jubal Early descended to the trough of defeat within three months when opponent General Philip Sheridan resoundingly defeated him in the Valley campaign of 1864.

Jubal Early famously exhibited a harder, less gallant personal as a leading Confederate practitioner of "hard" or destructive war, a tactic usually ascribed to Union generals Hunter, Sheridan, and Sherman. An extortionist of Yankee capital in northern towns in Pennsylvania and Maryland—typically in the form of tribute—Early also became forever associated with the wanton destruction of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, as well as Congressman Thaddeus Stevens private commerical ironworks, and the private dwellings of Maryland governor Augustus Bradford and then Postmaster General Montgomery Blair. How war hardened a crabbed, arthritically hobbled but brilliantly pragmatic soldier and lawyer offers one of the most fascinating puzzles of personality in Civil War history.

One of the most alluring yet repellent figures of Southern Confederate history, Jubal Early would devolve from the ideal prewar constitutional unionist to the postwar personification of the unreconstructed rebel and progenitor of the “lost cause” explanation for the demise of the Confederacy's experiment in rebellion or independence. This critical study explains how one of Virginia's loyal sons came through war and peace to garner a unique position in the Confederacy's pantheon of heroes—and the Union’s cabal of military villains.

Jubal Early: Robert E. Lee’s Bad Old Man will appeal to anyone interested in Civil War history and Confederate history.

Review
Returning to the subject of a former study, Civil War Historian Cooling offers renewed insights into the personae of Lt. Gen. Jubal Anderson Early, including how a notable Unionist Whig could be transformed into a controversial Confederate commander and an outspoken champion of Southern 'lost cause' apologists. . . .A consummate depiction of perhaps the Confederacy's most colorful and confounding figure. Highly recommended for Civil War historians, specialists in 19th-century military tactics, lay readers, and all libraries. (Library Journal)

[Jubal Early: Robert E. Lee's Bad Old Man] is well written and organized and presents a useful synthesis of existing scholarship. It provides an effective look at Early's career and illustrates the general's importance both to the war in Virginia and postwar South. Moreover, the extensive bibliography will prove valuable to those wanting to discover more about Early. (Blue & Gray Magazine)

Benjamin Cooling’s new book is a worthwhile read for anyone seeking an overview of the famed Confederate general and postwar apologist. Entertaining, well written, and fast-paced, it will leave inquisitive readers wanting to explore the many primary and secondary sources the author presents in his extensive bibliography. To that end, Cooling has succeeded in whetting our appetites for even more of Lee’s Bad Old Man. (The Civil War Monitor)

Cooling's book is ably constructed. . . .[T]his [is a] commendable work. (Journal of Southern History)

Jubal Early: Robert E. Lee’s Bad Old Man will appeal to anyone interested in Civil War history and Confederate history more generally.

One of the South's Lesser Lights!
By Mike O'Connor
After reading Benjamin Cooling's insightful JUBAL EARLY, you certainly understand why Early was branded "Robert E. Lee's Bad Old Man." Early would never qualify as a 'Southern Chavalier,' being a bitter, dyspeptic, foul-mouthed individual. One of Lee's lesser generals, his greatest chance at glory - the seizure of Washington - was thrown away by his own character flaws. Never accepting the South's defeat, he achieved even greater prominence postwar by espousing the "Lost Cause." Civil War buffs, in particular, should find Cooling's book, a 2014 Rowman & Littlefield release, of interest.

Cooling summarizes the life and times of this controversial figure in 200 erudite, well-researched pages that help illuminate this problematic character. Early's childhood, especially the loss of his mother, definitely played a role in his development but, though Cooling does an excellent job of illuminating Early's character, many of the factors that produced that irritable, unloved man can only be suggested or surmised. His military record is more easily described, Early's strengths often being outweighed by his flaws. The Washington gambit remains one of the most tantalizing "what-ifs" of the Civil War.

Having had little knowledge of the general, JUBAL EARLY was an eye-opener for me. After reading tomes on Lee, Jackson, Stuart, Longstreet, et al, Cooling's book was a splash of water in the face. I can't say the book was entertaining - given the nature of the beast - but it was informative and enlightening. Bad Old Man, indeed! Recommended.

A good introduction to an interesting life
By B. SMITH
A non-sentimental assessment of an often overlooked and misunderstood character who is too often overshadowed by more flamboyant Southern generals. A good introduction to an interesting life.

Gary Gallagher's Opinion
By mike neely
It should be noted that Gary Gallagher has written an excellent essay about Jubal Early's raid on Washington that describes Lee's orders and Early's significant successes in carrying out his multi-faceted mission. In short, Early's raid was successful beyond Lee's expectations and no one ordered or anticipated Early would enter Washington D.C. With exhausted troops (and Grant's troops on the way) Early was confronted with an opportunity to enter Washington for a brief time, likely with significant casualties, or to retreat with his command and troops intact, having successfully carried out Lee's orders. One of the main goals of Early's mission/raid was to take pressure off of Richmond and Lee's troops which was certainly a success - Grant moved north quickly - with two divisions, plus. Another goal was for Early to take control of the Shenandoah Valley which he also succeeded in doing, before he even got to the Washington area. Gallagher views Early's raid as largely a success while Cooling sees it very differently.

Ruhlmann: Master of Art Deco, by Florence Camard

Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann (1879-1933) was one of the greatest French cabinet makers and decorators. He used rare woods for the framework of his pieces, and ornamented them with ivory, tortoiseshell, lacquer, mirrors, silk and tooled metals, and also applied his artistic taste to lamps, wall coverings, rugs, beds, divans and cigar boxes, many of which are reproduced in this study of his life and work. It encompasses examples from all areas of Ruhlmann's output, and includes many sketches.

The work of a genius
By S. Annetta
A must-have reference book for designers, design enthusiasts, or fans of French Art Deco. Ruhlmann was one of France's most prolific furniture designers, and one of the greatest artistes of our time.

Although he was criticized for creating objects only for the elite, everything he created is museum-quality and will be forever coveted by anyone with an appreciation for true Art Deco design. His use of rare and luxurious materials such as ebony and other rare woods, vellum, ivory, bronze, tortoise-shell, shagreen, doeskin, morocco, and eggshell lacquer only highlighted the beautiful forms he imagined, and pushed the boundaries of cabinet-making skills to have created. His invention of the `fuseau' leg enabled his craftsmen to make some of the most elegant furniture ever produced.

The many photos and sketches included of furniture, lighting, rugs and interiors of his design are invaluable to anyone in the trade. A true bible in every sense of the word and a great source of inspiration.

Deborah Butterfield, by Robert Gordon, Deborah Butterfield

This new paperback edition of Deborah Butterfield showcases the full oeuvre of this great American sculptor, updated with new images of the artist’s latest work and information on her many gallery shows and museum exhibitions. Beautifully packaged with a new cover, this elegant and lyrical volume presents the most comprehensive retrospective look at this important American artist. Butterfield transforms selected pieces of scrap iron and found wood into majestic, life-size horse sculptures that are, as art historian Wayne L. Roosa has written, “like ancient, noble archaeological remains, skeletal and grand.” The book includes insightful essays by the noted author and horsewoman Jane Smiley, poet and art critic John Yau, and a selection of poems by poet Vicki Hearne, a close friend of Butterfield's. Author Robert Gordon followed the artist's career for a quarter century and brings unique insight to her body of work.

From Publishers Weekly
With extraordinary focus over 25 years, Butterfield has created sculptures with a single subject: horses. And with an introduction by Jane Smiley (A Thousand Acres), an essay by poet and art critic John Yau, poems by the late Vicki Hearne and pages of beautifully reproduced work, Butterfield comes off as a thoroughbred in the world of art. As Smiley says, "I have never met a horse lover who did not gasp at the truth of Butterfield's horses," and this catalogue, timed to coincide with a traveling exhibition of Butterfield's work, is sure to delight anyone with a passion for horses and art. Whether her works are found in steel or iron, wood, barbed wire or cast bronze, her ability to animate a pile of seemingly lifeless materials with the shape and spirit of a horse can be truly breathtaking. Particularly intriguing are the pieces made with giant metal letters-the shape of the letters transforming magically into shoulders, hocks and arched neck. Even nonbelievers will be impressed with Butterfield's technical mastery over her mediums, particularly her intricate variation on the "lost wax" method of casting bronze. Strangely, one 1979 piece cited often in the text, in which Butterfield cleverly integrated the barbed wire found on her Montana ranch, is not pictured here, but anyone with an interest in the possibilities of material, or in what constitutes form, will be pleased by this selection.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Horses have been Butterfield's totem animal and endlessly evocative subject for several decades, and she has portrayed these regal creatures with the unlikeliest of materials--mud; twigs; and, most often, junk metal--as well as exquisitely cast bronze. Each of Butterfield's horses is a distinct individual, yet each sculpture embodies the very essence of horse. Linear and gestural, her sculptures are nearly anatomical in their expressive tracing of bones, sinew, blood vessels, and nerve ganglia, and they are poetic, too, in their distillation and potent emotional valence. Also a superb horsewoman, Montana-based Butterfield couldn't ask for more simpatico documentation of her vital work than Gordon's superb monograph, the first on this major American artist. The colorplates are perfect, and the commentary brilliant. In her stirring introduction, Pulitzer Prize winner and horsewoman Jane Smiley revels in the "absolute horsiness" of Butterfield's creations. Poet John Yau writes about what a "loaded subject" horses are, and both he and Smiley consider the paradox inherent in Butterfield's use of industrial detritus to create images of living beings. Butterfield's evocative horses are studies in reclamation and reintegration, and the plexus between nature and humankind. Donna Seaman

Sculptures of horses that almost breathe
By Jesse Kornbluth
Not for Deborah Butterfield the bronzes of Frederick Remington, who saw horses as active partners of active men. Her horses are....themselves. Individuals. With distinct personalities. And great souls. If you love animals, these will steal your affection as surely as if they were great cats or dogs.

What's surprising about Butterfield's horses is their construction. She began by making them of sticks, wire and mud. (And by building them big --- they're taller than most horses.) From the beginning, she could use these unpromising materials to deliver the essence of a horse. What she could not deliver was permanence. So she learned to use disposable materials as the mold of the sculpture, and then to cast it in bronze that retained the texture of wood, wire and mud. Careful painting completes the work.

Butterfield breaks fresh ground with every horse. And why not? She thinks of her sculptures as self-portraits --- as explorations of her animal nature. Maybe that's why so many of her sculptures seem to be female. And why they connect on such a deeply emotional level.

This beautiful book contains 75 full-color plates. It is the ideal gift for horse lovers --- and that includes girls who are mad for horses and are ready to dream about them in a new way. But even considered just as a coffee-table book, 'Deborah Butterfield' passes every test, starting with the shallowest --- your guests will gravitate to it, flip through it, and say, "Where did you get this?"

My heart swells with pride and admiration. What a wonderful tribute to an artist that completely captures the spirit and nature of the majesic equine beast she loves. The line and content of her work is perfect. How marvelous that her work is across the nation, how poetic and musical is the word that describes her work. A marvelous book.

Captain American, Spider-Man, Wolverine, the nonviolent Doctor Strange, caster of rhymed spells, the swashbuckling vigilante Daredevil, the Manhattan-based Fantastic Four, Eastern European tyrant Doctor Doom, the rampaging Incredible Hulk and his alter-ego, mild-mannered physicist Bruce Banner, are among the heroes and villains we meet in this lavish, nostalgic survey of Marvel Comics' major characters, story lines and artists. Sanderson, Marvel's former archivist, views these fantasies as a modern-day mythology recasting age-old themes of heroism and human struggle in pop cultural trappings. His entertaining text, decked out with kinetic story-captioned artwork, insets and comic-book lore, interprets these comics as parables of the Cold War, space race, multiple personality disorder, teen angst, love and hate between the sexes?and as good, old-fashioned storytelling with more than camp appeal for adults. Featuring 400 color illustrations, the book is a visual knockout. BOMC selection.

From School Library Journal
YA. Sanderson traces the evolution of the Marvel superheroes from their conception in 1939 to the present day. He discusses their decline in popularity in the early 50s and the resurgence of interest in the 60s when new characters emerged and the settings moved into other dimensions and galaxies. The history and contributions of Marvel artists and writers such as Jack Kirby and Stan Lee are highlighted throughout the text and numerous illustrations. On a fundamental level, the story lines haven't changed significantly, but have become more science-fiction oriented in recent years. The illustrations have changed somewhat more over time, and the newer characters appear more dynamic. For comic-book fans, this survey of the evolution of these popular characters and their fantasy world will be interesting reading.?Deborah Francis, R. E. Lee High School, Springfield, VA
Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
In the 1960s, Marvel Comics revitalized then-staid superhero comics by introducing characters with superhuman powers but quite human imperfections and temperaments. Sanderson's survey of Marvel's costumed champions really starts with the 1961 launching of the Fantastic Four, who led the way for Spider-Man, the Hulk, the X-Men, and the hundreds of other inhabitants of what would come to be known as the Marvel Universe and "a modern-day mythology." Over the years, the many writers and artists who chronicled these heroes' exploits strived to maintain a tight-knit continuity to lend consistency, if hardly verisimilitude, to their larger-than-life adventures. Unlike Les Daniels, whose Marvels (1991) related the company's history through its comics and their creators, Sanderson focuses on the characters and the considerable changes they have undergone to stay timely. His big, copiously illustrated book should thrill current comics fans, and baby boomers who haven't picked up a Marvel comic in decades may be astonished to learn what has become of some childhood heroes. Amazon.com Review
Enthusiasts of American cultural history will be thrilled to get their hands on this book by art historian, lecturer, and cabinetmaker John T. Kirk. The Shakers, living in self-contained religious communities since the late 18th century, have been constant producers of American decorative art. Through documents, diaries, letters, and photographs, Kirk gives a complete study of the evolution of Shaker religious beliefs and practices, and the art and furniture produced. The weight of the type is weak, making the tall columns of densely packed type hard to read, and some of the illustrations are muddy. But the book is rich in information and complete in its examination of the subject.

From Booklist
The celebration of black womanhood that began in 1970 when five black men--Gordon Parks, Jonathan Blount, Clarence O. Smith, Ed Lewis, and Cecil Hollingsworth--began publishing Essence is an occasion commemorated by this anniversary publication. Essence is the magazine that recognizes and discusses issues from an African American woman's perspective. Over the years, famous black women have been interviewed, photographed, and showcased in the magazine. Each issue has featured discussions on topics, from motherhood to mutual funds, that transcend gender and race. This volume includes more than 200 photographs and contributions from celebrated poets, writers, and scholars. Flipping through the rich history of the magazine, readers can discern a clear view of the evolution of black womanhood and appreciate the celebration of that viewpoint. The photography is arresting; the women are captured at their best. In most instances the camera appears to be in love with its subject. With a foreword by Maya Angelou and an introduction by Susan Taylor, this volume delivers the message that the first 25 years, while tremendously successful, are only the building blocks for the future of Essence. Lillian Lewis

The Art of Harvey Kurtzman: The Mad Genius of Comics, by Denis Kitchen, Paul Buhle

Harvey Kurtzman discovered Robert Crumb and gave Gloria Steinem her first job in publishing when he hired her as his assistant. Terry Gilliam also started at his side, met an unknown John Cleese in the process, and the genesis of Monty Python was formed. Art Spiegelman has stated on record that he owes his career to him. And he's one of Playboy publisher Hugh Hefner's favorite artists.
Harvey Kurtzman had a Midas touch for talent, but was himself an astonishingly talented and influential artist, writer, editor, and satirist. The creator of MAD and Playboy's "Little Annie Fanny" was called, "One of the most important figures in postwar America" by the New York Times. Kurtzman's groundbreaking "realistic" war comics of the early '50s and various satirical publications (MAD, Trump, Humbug, and Help!) had an immense impact on popular culture, inspiring a generation of underground cartoonists. Without Kurtzman, it's unlikely we'd have had Airplane, SNL, or National Lampoon.
The Art of Harvey Kurtzman is the first and only authorized celebration of this "Master of American Comics." This definitive book includes hundreds of never-before-seen illustrations, paintings, pencil sketches, newly discovered lost E.C. Comics layouts, color compositions, illustrated correspondence, and vintage photos from the rich Kurtzman archives

From Publishers Weekly
Though his tenure lasted less than two years at the publication, Harvey Kurtzman is the genius responsible for Mad magazine's design, cast of characters, and unique brand of irreverence. In this beautifully illustrated volume, Kitchen and Buhle follow Kurtzman from his youth in the Depression-era Bronx, through his early freelance work, to his big break with William Gaines of E.C. Comics and beyond. At E.C., Kurtzman aired his anti-racist, anti-imperialist views in war comics Two-Fisted Tales and Frontline Combat. Kurtzman spent "long hours in the New York Public Library researching" to create authentic entertainment that also "compels contemplation." Once he had a family to feed, Kurtzman embarked on a less time-consuming humor project, which in 1952 launched as a comic book called Mad. For 23 issues, Kurtzman did it all-"every word from front to back, and laid out every cover, each story, and filler"-and, ultimately, saved E.C. from bankruptcy. When E.C. denied the artist's request for partial ownership of the company, Kurtzman left. Eventually, he would establish three different humor magazines, none of which as successful as Mad, and spent the rest of his career doing a comic for Playboy. He remains a major influence on today's comic writers, and this vibrant collection makes it easy to see why.

Always chasing the rainbow
By Robin
Well worth the wait! At last a super looking book about the comics funny man. There are several books about Mad and a recently published Humbug reprint (a Trump one is touch-and-go) help to reveal how great Kurtzman was and this book is a handsome biography not only in words but with two hundred well chosen illustrations.

His story, by Kitchen and Buhle, is helped because they represent the Kurtzman estate and clearly had access to a lot of original artwork which I doubt has been seen before. You'll see art from Two-fisted Tales, Frontline Combat, Mad, Trump, Humbug, Help! and Little Annie Fanny all with decent captions, too.

The book's production is really first-class and a nice touch is the addition of four pages printed on tracing paper that overlay a page of Little Annie Fanny, the long captions explain just how much work went into each page of the Playboy feature.

Since his death in 1993 Kurtzman's stature has grown and rightly so but I thought it unfortunate that he never quite achieved the perfection he was always striving for with his publications. I bet he would have appreciated the love and care that has gone into this book tribute.

The Story of an Unsung Cartoon Master
By Tom Sito
Harvey Kurtzman, like his contemporary Wally Wood, is not as well known today, but was one of the most influential cartoonists of the mid Twentieth Century. His style helped define EC Comics, MAD Magazine and Little Annie Fannie. He helped new cartoonists get their starts, from Drew Friedman to Art Speigelman to Robert Crumb. Like Wood, his biggest fans were his fellow cartoonists.
Paul Buhle and Dennis Kitchen have done a masterful job in finally telling the story of this unsung creative genius, in words and images. This book is a MUST for anyone who is serious about becoming a cartoonist or collecting cartoons.
