Much of the warmth and literary force in this brief book is due to the remarkable poet Denise Levertov. So great was her energy and life force, even in her early 70s, that the writer's friends were shocked by her sudden death last year. Levertov and Williams began corresponding when Levertov was still in her 20s and Williams already a sixtyish veteran of the modernist scene, yet it was clear who was teaching whom: a woman of powerful certainties, Levertov soon had Williams altering lines in his published plays. In one 1960 letter, he writes after her visit, "Your criticism of my own shortcomings is noted. I'll pay attention to what you say." And he soon became a one-man cheering section for her accomplishments; after recommending her three times for Guggenheim Fellowships, he crowed when she finally won in 1962: "No one ever deserved a Gug more than you!" Their letters do not consist only of literary matters; the poets also discussed the basic enjoyment of life?as when Levertov advises the elder poet, "Did you ever see N.Y. from one of the really high buildings? It's worth doing." Also "worth doing" as a life-enhancing experience is reading this charming and affectionate correspondence.

About the Author
William Carlos Williams (1883 1963), author of Paterson and winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Pictures from Brueghel, is widely considered one of the greatest poets of the twentieth century. Also a short-story writer, novelist, essayist, and translator, he helped in a big way to establish modernism in America.

Prayer and protest come in many guises. The Basotho women of South Africa and Lesotho pray to their ancestors for rain, abundance, and peace by painting and slicing brilliant geometric murals on the mud plaster walls of their houses. "If the prayers are successful," says photographer and author Gary N. van Wyk, "the rains arrive and wash away the paintings." Growing up white under apartheid, van Wyk noticed these vivid houses while traveling with his family through the Highveld below Johannesburg where many Basotho lived and worked on white-owned farms. In the years when links to the outlawed African National Congress party were often severely punished, some Basotho women defiantly splashed their homes with the black, green, and gold colors of the ANC. Van Wyk joined in such protests as an art student by helping paint street murals of state-sanctioned violence. A passion for recording political graffiti led him back to the dwellings decorated in ANC colors, several of which he photographed for this dazzling testament to Basotho lives, ceremonies, history, and art. --Francesca Coltrera

About the Author
Gary van Wyk was born in Zimbabwe and completed graduate degrees in law, fine arts, and art history in South Africa. A leading figure in the anti-apartheid Resistance Art Movement, he was exiled in 1986. He completed his Ph.D. in Art History at Columbia University, NY, as a Fulbright Scholar, and received a Rockefeller Award for his research in Africa. He has published and edited more than fifty articles and books related to African art and culture, most recently Shangaa: Art of Tanzania, which the New York Times described as "stupendous." His African Painted Houses (Abrams) was a New York Times Book Review top architectural book for 1998, and Apartheid: Calibrations of Color (Rosen) received a Notable Book Award from the African Studies Association. He edited the 56-volume series Heritage Library of African Peoples (Rosen) for young adult readers, and was commissioning editor of the 12-volume African Civilizations series (Franklin-Watts, 1998-99). He has curated several critically acclaimed exhibitions in South Africa and the United States, and "made New York history by integrating African art, old and new--into the fabric of the contemporary Chelsea gallery scene" (NY Times, May 22, 2006). His most recent book is József Jakovits: Surrealist, Primitivist, Kabalist (2014).

a visual feast for the eyes

This book is full of wonderful photographs of African Painted houses. The verbage is complete in explaining the significance of the illustrations from a historical and present day view. This is a facinating rich culture. The use of patterns and color, and their meaning come together in an easy to understand format. This a book I can pick up and read for hours at a time or peruse for minutes.

WOW - great book!!! Wonderful art, beautiful color pics

This is really a wonderful book! I bought it because it looked like it had nice color pictures, and it turned out they're fantastic! I'm an artist and I just LOVE these beautiful painted houses. It also looks like it has a lot of good information in the narrative, but so far all I've done is look at the great color pics. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Women's art as a poltical message

African Painted Houses is filled with not only beautiful photographs of dwellings, but reminds us of a time not to far ago where South Africa was filled with distress, social and political upheavel, and when women were meant to be at home. Women are still told to stay at home, and these African women took it upon themselves to go against the social status quo and speak there minds in an amazing artistic manner. African Painted Houses will enlighten you to the true nature of the protest against the Apartheid. When the African men were out fighting for independence and when the African men were prisoned and not home, who maintained the house? who maintained the continuing fight against the Apartheid...it was women. African painted Houses is an easy read and will fill your minds from a world that is so far from ours but the messages are so close to the heart. Women have voices and in this book, women's voices are projected into a beautiful masterpieces.

About the Author
Elsie Freeman Finch has been a leader in the development of public relations and education programs for archives since she began her career in the mid-1960's. essential book on the 007 franchise

Basically, this is a coffee-table book that is long on great photos, long on great text, and short on boredom. If you're a Bond fan, you're gonna want to pick this one up.

The text follows the Bond franchise from its inception all the way through the 20th official movie, "Die Another Day." Plenty of background on Ian Fleming is given, and at various points the authors touch on "other" Bond media such as the comic strips and the video games, but the main course here is obviously the film series.

One thing this book does not do: it does not simply rehash the same info that is presented in the behind-the-scenes documentaries on the 007 DVDs. Those were also written by John Cork, and it would have been easy as pie for him to simply tell the same stories over again. A few of them DO get retold, of course, but only a few. Mainly, this is stuff you may well not have heard before.

The book is extremely strong on the subject of placing the films in their proper historical context. For example, over the course of the years 1962-1967, the spy movie as a genre was at a great level of popularity, and Cork goes into thorough yet succinct detail in discussing how this cultural trend was both a product of the Bond films AND one of the reasons for the inevitable slide of the series from all-pervasive popularity to "mere" exceptional popularity.

Cork and Scivally also keep solid track on what was going on in the world (in terms of politics, warfare, and other such factors of interest regarding a spy film) at the time of each successive film. The authors' narrative on this subject is so strong that it makes me feel as if I understand some of the films a bit better. This falls down somewhat toward the end f the book, at least for me. I was not entirely persuaded by Cork/Scivally's analysis of certain world events during the era of the Brosnan films; considering the Clinton/Lewinsky scandal in light of the plot of "Tomorrow Never Dies," for instance, just didn't work as well for me as similar assertions about other of the films.

That, however, is a very mild complaint. This is a GREAT book, not just for Bond fans, but for any serious fan of pop culture.

THE ULTIMATE BOND BOOK

Unfortunately, this is the ultimate, but not the definitive. Not with the ongoing series, as a matter of fact, Bond 21 has just been announced, and it has a name and a director already, despite the fact that producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson don't have a man for the job at hand!

But never mind, this is the kind of book that never gets out of date, it is brilliantly written, not only full of exciting pictures from the series and from behind the scenes, as well, but also, and foremost, it is filled with all the details a hardcore Bond fan would ever dream of.

A true LABOR OF LOVE. The authors are well renowned historians, responsible for the DVD's documentaries, and the outcome are amazing. A very comprehensive book, depicting political, social and economics facts that were intertwined with the films.

One of its most memorable deeds, and remarkable strength is the fact that it comprised not only the official films, but also, the two spin-offs of the series, considered, by many, as "bastards", namely, CASINO ROYALE (1967) and NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN. It also includes some breefing on the american TV broadcasting BBC production as of 1954, CASINO ROYALE, starred by Barry Nelson.

Don't miss out on this one, it is sure a well addition to any Bond lover as well as movie buffs all around.

A real treat for aficionados !

I own several books on the subject ("The Essential Bond", "The Incredible World of 007", "The Bond Encyclopedia", "The James Bond Movie Book", etc) and while they are all very good, this one has to be the best by a long shot. The reasons ?: The excelent quality and size of the photographs; shot by shot analyis of some of the best Bond scenes; excelent material from the new release, "Die another day" and, ultimately, the amazing job done by the writers ! This book could not have been done by anybody without a real love for the subject.

I used this book as last summer's hostess gift in a community where I've got to do about a dozen of those a summer. It's a delightful little book and everyone loved it. Got great feedback. My attached gift card always said something like, "It's so much more fun when it happens to someone else!".

"DISASTERS" IS DELIGHTFUL!

I bought this book because I found the title amusing, but in addition to the disastrous tales there is some wonderful advice. I don't think of myself as an entertainer, but now I'm inspired (and armed with the wisdom of others' mistakes!)

Often I don't know what to bring my hosts when attending a dinner party. Flowers seem so trite. I plan on buying several copies of this book so that I have a "go to" gift, whenever in doubt.

Dinner Party Disasters would make an excellent hostess gift or a gift to a newly married couple.

A Pop-Up Look at Six Amazing Bugs

This big colorful book looks at six bugs: ladybug, bee, grasshopper, spider,beetle, and cockroach. The intro explains the difference between insects, arachnids, myriapods and crustaceans and than shows young readers five insects and one arachnid. Each spread has one big pop-up and just enough copy to keep 4-8 year-olds interested. Many wild facts about each bug - did you know a cockroach can live without its head for several weeks because its brain is spread around its body? Amazing!

This is a beautiful book. The pop-up bugs are large with a lot of detail and fairly sturdy construction. There is great descriptive information that accompanies each bug. There are 6 bugs in the book and my only regret is that there aren't more.
