Archival Theory, Records, and the Public, by Trevor Livelton

Now in paperback!

Livelton considers the nature of public records from an archival perspective, analyzing concepts rather than the daily realities with which public records archivists deal. However, his carefully reasoned conclusions provide a strong foundation on which principled rather than ad hoc decisions can be made, and so will be of interest to teachers, students and practitioners of archival science.

The author presents a general or theoretical view of public records as documents made or received and preserved by the sovereign or its agents in the conduct of governance. This analysis is illustrated by a variety of examples, including a discussion of freedom of information.

Review
A meticulous analysis of an important question in archival theory...professionals interested in the nature of records will enjoy his reasoned arguments...the selected bibliography is useful... (Rare Books and Manuscripts Librarianship)

Thoughtful contribution to archival theory. The most useful analysis is in drawing a sharp distinction between public and private records. (Lisca)

Livelton gives us much to think about. (Archivaria)

A cogent treatise...informed by an impressive range of disciplinary perspectives...the thoroughness of the work is testimony to...the insight of the author...work by master's and doctoral students in North American archival education programs represents a major under-tapped resource of potential contributions to the archival literature, and it is commendable to see the Society of American Archivists and Scarecrow Press publishing it in the United States...the entire volume would be appropriate for use in archival education...highly intelligent... (The American Archivist)

The Trojan Horse, by Albert Lorenz, Joy Schleh

The only picture book available featuring the tale of the Trojan Horse!

The Trojan Horse is one of the best known and most ingenious plans in the history of warfare. But it certainly raises a lot of questions: How did the Greeks, so far from home, pull off this daring feat? How did the Trojans—surrounded in their fortress—have enough food and water to sustain them for years? How could so tall a wooden horse be built unseen?

Albert Lorenz provides his answers to these questions, and others, via art panels, speech balloons, and architectural-style drawings, for a totally unique perspective on the famous conflict. The chorus guides the action, but there is plenty of commentary by the gods, as well as human action on earth. The city, ships, and the horse itself are rendered as architectural cut-aways and elevations to reveal what is going on inside as well as outside.

Packed full of well-researched facts and historical details, this book will appeal to readers looking for an adventure story about military cunning and fantastic events.

From School Library Journal
Grade 2-6–Part graphic novel, part picture book, and part Stephen Biesty-style cutaways, Lorenz's work breezes through the Trojan War, focusing on the culminating incident. The author omits grisly matters, leaving in the beauty contest of the goddesses, the rewarding of Helen to Paris, the long duration of the war, and the inspiration to create the great horse. The quarreling gods and goddesses are busts who talk in a modern style (yup, he just declared war!). The full-color illustrations feature ancient artistic motifs, large architectural structures teeming with small figures of humans and animals, cartoon panels of various sizes, and exaggerated facial expressions. Especially notable is a cutaway of the Trojan Horse, showing how soldiers got in and out, and what was included in the structure (notably, a bathroom). An author's note and a cartoon-style map provide further details, including the history of the city of Troy and dates and locations for the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. While the narrative is so abbreviated as to lose much of its more nuanced dramatic tension, the overall question of the story--who will win the war, and how?–is sufficient to keep young readers turning the pages. Not a notable achievement, but still an attractive and inviting title to help update aging mythology collections.–Coop Renner, Hillside Elementary, El Paso, TX

From Booklist
As in Kevin O'Malley's Mount Olympus Basketball (2003), this picture book for older readers employs an irreverent comics format to retell Greek myths. The minimal text lacks the polish and drama of the art; the pictures really tell the story of the Trojan Horse, with word boxes fitted into the detailed spreads. Younger children may have trouble piecing together the events on their first viewing, and they'll likely flip frequently to the opening, illustrated list of key characters to help sort out the connections. Teeming with action and detail, the double-page scenes show multilevel cross-sections of a Greek war ship, the city of Troy, and, of course, the Trojan Horse, which includes views of soldiers working, spying, and even using the toilet inside the giant structure. Attractive endpapers show a map of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World; suggest Lynn Curlee's Seven Wonders of the Ancient World (2002) to children who want to learn about these wondrous historical accomplishments. For the classroom as well as for browsing. Gillian Engberg

Very Cool Book
By Ashley Maple
I ordered this for my first grader to supplement our study of Ancient Greece. We have only leafed through the pages, but wow is it cool! My 6 year old, four year old, and two year old were all crammed around looking at the pages. The layout is comic book style, and narrated by the Greek Gods and Goddesses. The best illustration is a side view of the Trojan horse that shows the various stories inside and where the soldiers hid. The bargain price is just that; an great bargain off of the [...] cover price. I know when my boys get older this will probably be a favorite. I am very pleased with my purchase.

Does not really tell the story
By A dude
This has a poorly executed comic book style layout that is difficult to follow and tells very little of the actual story. There are virtually no positives. It lacks historical accuracy,it is not true to the original story, it is too short, and doesn't even qualify as an acceptable outline of the real story.

Good book for information about the Vatican, the architecture and the art that is kept there.
By Sharon Wilfong
This was a well written book. It gives the history of the Vatican, how the buildings, including St. Peter's were designed, by whom, and how they were constructed, going all the way back to the first few centuries after Christ. It divides sections up into individual museums, which Pope created that museum and what sort of art (Renaissance, Medieval, Egyptian, Ancient Roman and Greek, Modern) is housed there. Lots of photos; a lot are black and white, but there are also photographs of the art in color.

The Vatican Collections The Papacy and Art
By L. Milne
Book relates the long and interesting relationship between the Papacy and art throughout the centuries. The works of art in the exhibit, of which this book is a catalog, and a study guide, will speak of history, of the human condition in its universal challenge, and of the endeavors of the human spirit to attain the beauty to which it is attracted. Beautiful color photos, excellent detail, seldom seen works which are part of the Vatican Collection.

Just Like Being There
By beth reed
Thirty years ago, my grandmother took me to see the Vatican Collection exhibition in Chicago. I had been looking for online descriptions of the items included at the exhibit. I found the catalog for basically shipping costs on Amazon and jumped on it! Now I wish I had bought the hardbound version. Slowly, I am reading through the catalog. It is full of history. Fortunately, we have easy access to the internet unlike 1984. I have done more research about the items, history, significance and artists. I could not be more satisfied. It took a while to deliver after ordering but that was because I chose the cheapest shipping. Beautiful and in perfect condition until my puppy got hold of it!

A Real Gem
By heretic666
I have written over two hundred reviews of books on british ceramics on amazon.uk but this is the first review of american porcelain on the american amazon.
I confess to having no real interest in ceramics from this side of the ocean as the examples I encountered were mostly Lenox and resembled Belleek without the finesse or delicacy. Then I read the P.Daniels book which posed the possibility that true hard paste porcelain might have been pioneered in this country before Cookworthy's patent.
Further research was required to determine if this was heresy. Material was and is sparse and apart from the volume on Bonnin and Morris there is not much available on colonial ceramics manufacture.
I bought this book expecting nothing much and was pleasantly surprised by its scope and quality. A nice large format with coloured plates on nearly every page and apart from the footnotes the text was adjacent to the object being described.
Due to the influences and personnel involved in manufacture there would always be an echo of england and europe in the products but nearly all seem to have a slight quirk that sets them apart from imports. For example the cover illustration could have the portrait of Washington removed and would still be ascertained to be of european influence but not of european manufacture, Giving the author full credit for mentioning where the potters or owners drew their influences, and some times even employees from is a major strength of this book.
I am not sure if this book is truly representative of the ceramics output of this nation or just a catalogue of the best of the best but the extensive bibliography at the end would enable further research and study.
I have about as much chance of collecting american porcelain as I have of collecting moon rocks but I am perfectly happy to have this volume among my reference collection

Archivists, Collectors, Dealers, and Replevin: Case Studies on Private Ownership of Public Documents, by Elizabeth H. Dow

Today, government archivists and manuscript collectors are often in conflict over government-created documents that come up for sale out of private hands. Such manuscripts are often archival material that escaped government control, and government archivists want that missing material back to complete the historic record. Collectors and dealers, however, assert that since the government didn’t take care of their documents properly at the time of their creation, they lost the right to claim them now. This divide between government archivists and collectors has become especially acute for “trophy” documents written by a person of note or about a well-known person or event.

Archivists, Collectors, Dealers, and Replevin does not serve as a legal guide to the issues that arise in this divide; instead, it presents both sides of the conflict and examines them dispassionately. The book begins with an historical review of institutional and state-sponsored collecting and the care of historical documents in the United States. The review is followed by a selection of tales of theft and neglect in the past. The third chapter examines the origins and maturation of the archival profession in the United States, and the next discusses the phenomenon of collecting, both as a hobby and as an institutional activity. The fifth chapter provides a general summary of state and federal statutes on public documents in private hands, and with that background in place, the sixth chapter distills the perspectives of the various parties in the struggle. The seventh presents a series of case studies developed to evoke the complexity of these conflicts. The book concludes with steps that holders of public documents can take to avoid conflicts, as well as steps an archive can take to protect its collection.

Review
This is valuable to any archival collection where public documents are maintained, acquired, and sought out. Future archival students will also benefit from the unbiased approach, respecting all sides of the situation. (American Reference Books Annual)

The first-ever book-length study tackles a controversial legal principle that the public is unaware of and that most attorney’s are only vaguely familiar with: Replevin. . . . Dow’s stature as a respected archivist and a Manuscript Society “in-law” puts her in a unique position to survey the replevin issue. . . . Dow succeeds in straddling the fence-conveying archivists’ passion for protecting their charges and preserving the historical record and conveying collectors’ and dealers’ passion for doing the very same thing. . . . Archivists, Collectors, Dealers, and Replevin is a thoughtful and well-reasoned explanation of both sides of the replevin issue-and heavily footnoted, as one would expect it to be. I wouldn’t say that Dow champions either the archivists or the collectors/dealers, but rather shows an admirable nonpartisan restraint that should serve both sides well. (Main Street Fine Books and Manuscripts)

Archivist, Collectors, Dealers, and Repelevin represents a signal contribution to the archival literature that deserves a very wide audience indeed. Beginning with the inspired cover illustration, Elizabeth Dow's engaging essay astutely explores the perennially dark and bloody ground of archival conflict arising from the presence of public documentaries in private hands. . . . Dow's book contains much of value to a great many readers. . . Dow's imaginative assortment of case studies alone will provide engaging fodder for enlightening class discussions on subjects ranging from acquisitions and appraisal to ethics and the law. (The American Archivist)

The book is very well researched, and the author has consulted a range of primary and secondary documentation. While the topic of the book is complex and multi-faceted. . ., the author has examined all aspects of the issue and described the problems with an attempt to get a balanced view. The author has a long and impressive career in archives and related fields and here has produced a very objective view of the problems and issues with lost public documents. This book would be suitable for archivists employed in the US public service, as well as librarians, historians and collectors with an interest in this area. (Collection Building)

This book does an admirable job of illustrating many aspects of a complicated legal situation, providing archivists, collectors, and dealers with insight, analysis, and practical advice. Well-written and to the point, this volume is highly recommended for archivists and dealers alike. (College & Research Libraries)

In Archivists, Collectors, Dealers, and Replevin: Case Studies on Private Ownership of Public Documents, respected archival practitioner and library and information science educator Elizabeth H. Dow studies the conflicts that arise from 'a legal action brought for the purpose of recovering specified items'. . . .The book contains clear prose and straightforward organization. Dow writes informative introductory chapters on the development of archival practice and the archival profession in the United States. . . .[M]anuscript and special collections librarians as well as public records specialists should own and read this small . . . book. (Archival Issues)

Bernhard, by Yoel Hoffmann

Set in 1940's Palestine, Bernhard concerns a German-Jewish widower.

Devastated by the loss of his wife, Bernhard disconsolately walks the streets of Jerusalem, considering Gandhi, analysis, the beauty of his wife Paula's neck, his Arab neighbors, Kokoschka, the Messiah, and the inner life of his friend Gustav the plumber. As his hero tries to come to terms with his grief and the disasters of WWII, Hoffmann shows the slow remaking of an inner world.

From Publishers Weekly
In Israeli avant-garde novelist Hoffmann's startling minimalist collage, 50-ish, grief-numbed widower Bernhard Stein, transplanted from Berlin to Palestine, ruminates on his wife's death, on history and on the universe against a background of Hitler's rampage across Europe. A postmodernist kaleidoscope unfolding in 172 loosely interconnected vignettes, most of them a page in length or shorter, this experimental novel echoes Hoffmann's more conventional double-novella American debut, The Book of Joseph and Katschen. Bernhard, whose feverish ruminations hop from Spinoza to El Greco to Trotsky, is a man unhinged. His best friend, a plumber named Gustav, and Elvira Neuwirth, the cultured Viennese widow with whom he flirts, seem almost as unreal as his fictive alter ego, Moscow-born dermatologist D.S. Gregory, whose father lost a leg fighting in the American Revolution. Within these flights of fancy lies a searing meditation on loss of faith, the tragedy of modern history and life's apparent meaninglessness. Hoffmann's semantic riffs, historical excursions and self-referential metaphysical noodlings can be wearying. Yet he adds ballast to this tale by loading it with dark parables and dreams; Jewish ritual and lore; German, Yiddish and Arabic phrases (translated in the margins); and snatches of songs, childhood memories and sexual fantasies. His hypnotic prose fuses everyday events and surreal imagery with the lyrical intensity of a Chagall painting. Rights: Harris/Elon Agency.

From Kirkus Reviews
Emotional intensity and a powerful sense of the fragility and impermanence of both the physical body and the social fabric are the distinguishing features of this 1991 novel by the Israeli author (Katschen & The Book of Joseph, not reviewed). A collage of brief vignettes presents the experiences and ruminations of Bernhard Stein, a middle-aged German Jew who, in the 1930s, has fled Berlin for Palestine, where he mourns the death of his beloved wife Paula and endures visionary glimpses of the exterior world's collapse as an objective correlative to the fragmentation of his own psyche (``When the Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor, the ships anchored in Bernhard's head go up in flames''). The novel's structure emphasizes the insistent onward momentum of Bernhard's chaotically busy mind: the 172 brief chapters overlap, the ending of one becoming the start of the opening sentence of the next. Redundancy and monotony arent entirely avoided, but Hoffmann does assemble a vividly individual character in his solipsistic protagonist's cleverly linked memories and fantasies. Bernhard's keenly felt longing for his late wife stimulates not only an unresolved relationship with an attractive widow but contrary intimations of the aroused body's imminent decay. News of Hitler's devastation of Europe and the war's ``progress'' on several fronts intensifies Bernhard's increasingly frequent withdrawals into the life he imagines for his invented alter ego ``D.S. Gregory,'' a dermatologist whose Russian father was a casualty of the American Revolutionary War. And the dreamer's hopeful recourse to the consolation implicit in poetry, biblical wisdom, and the philosophies of Descartes and Spinoza is rudely shaken by such implacable phenomena as the Palestinian government's decision to disallow ``ram's horns, whose sound resembles the sound of an air-raid siren, to be blown in the synagogues,'' and by the inability of his own arthritic fingers to form the sign ``V-Day.'' Not an easy read, but a further persuasive illustration of the genius of one of Israel's finest contemporary writers. -- Copyright ©1998, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Review
Gauging a metabolism of loss, his work is, in fact, an essential blurring and negation of such boundaries: between self and other, life and death, man and woman, human and animal. -- Nili Gold

The most immediately striking feature of this novel, the second available to us in English from the wonderful Romanian-born Israeli writer Yoel Hoffmann, is its unique structure. In some odd way this novel might be considered a myth of national origins, a story of modern Israel in its fetal state. The very (postmodern) form of the novel allows the silences to have a powerful presence. The words are as sparse as stones in a desert: a stark dialogue between the said and the unsaid. -- Review of Contemporary Fiction, Summer 1999

Utterly enchanting -- it's like nothing else. -- Rosemarie Waldrop

Yoel Hoffmann is one of the most precious voices in Israel's contemporary literature. -- Amos Oz

Yoel Hoffmann's poetic, avant-garde novel effectively portrays the despair of the German Jewish widower who reacts to his loss while simultaneously responding to the destruction and tragedy of the Holocaust. The author deftly interweaves Jewish kabbalistic teachings with philosophy to create a powerful and moving novel. -- World Literature Today, Eric Sterling, Spring 1999

Yoel Hoffmann, one of Israel's brightest and most unusual contemporary fiction writers, tells the story of Bernhardt, a fifty-year-old childless widower who left Germany before the Holocaust and lives in Palestine in the early 1940s. ...Stylistically, Hoffmann's book may remind the reader of an Emily Dickinson poem in prose. ... Yoel Hoffmann's poetic, avant-garde novel effectively portrays the despair of this German Jewish widower who reacts to his loss while simultaneously responding to the destruction and tragedy of the Holocaust. Superb, post-modern, philosophic and very readable
By M. J. Smith
With each book of Yoel Hoffmann's that I read, I become more and more impressed with his work. He builds his story out of small vignettes - real, imagined, and ruminations on either. These building blocks are often crafted out of the very ordinary - a cup of tea, a widow's birthday dance, a visit to a hospitalized friend, a fruit seller, shoe laces in Bernard's shooes - yet out of these very ordinary observations, a life story is built.
In this particular story, precision is emphasized. For example, parenthetical phrases are given to clarify sentences that are not unclear; these device builds an understanding of the inner thoughts of Bernard without describing and without using an omniscient narrator ... this is only one example of the incredible craft used to build the narrative.
This books succeeds in portraying a recently widowed Jew in Palestine coming to grips with the death of his wife and the horrors of WWII - portraying the crisis in understanding of fact, causality, spiritual understanding etc.
As this is the third incredibly excellent book I have read by Yoel Hoffman, I am astounded that he is not better known. Add this to any must read list.

Mountains from Space: Peaks and Ranges of the Seven Continents, by Stefan Dech, Rudiger Glasser, Reinhold Messner, Ralf-Peter Märtin

Using highly specialized, advanced digital satellite imaging-first made possible in the year 2000 with the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission-this book presents an astounding collection of images of the Earth's mountain ranges carefully compiled over the course of five years by the German Remote Sensing Data Center. Now available to the public for the first time here, the most majestic peaks on all seven continents are visible as they never would be to the naked eye-in views taken from 500 to 15 miles above the Earth that reveal the entire mountain range at once, unobstructed by clouds, haze, and the refraction of light.

Mountains from Space is much more than a collection of extraordinary pictures; it is a serious work of nonfiction about every important aspect of these fascinating geological formations, from their genesis by volcanic activity to their specific sociological features. Contributions by esteemed scientists and mountaineers alike highlight this provocative study of our planet Earth.

The Beauty From Above.
By Betty Burks
These spectacular pictures taken from different media (Space.cam using Shuttle Radar) are a unique collection of Earth's mountain ranges on all seven continents, some as seen from Space during the Shuttle Radio Topography Mission. Stefan Dech, professor at the University of Wurzburg in Germany where these 120 images were compiled, as head of the Remote Senisng Data Center over a five year course concludes: "distance creates clarity."

These views of Earth's "natural sculptures" taken by highly technical instruments available only to the Space program, are from a distance of only fifteen miles above the Earth to five hundred miles out in Space. Dech felt awe in processing this geophysical data into actual photographs and now is able to share the marvel for the first time. They allow us to see the beauty and vulnerabilty, and "appreciate its wholeness without boundaries."

Of all the coffee-table books of photos from Space on the market all at once, this shows our planet's craters caused by volcanoes in Hawaii and glaciers caused by global warming like the Malaspina Glacier in Alaska. The world's tallest mountain is Hawaii's Mauna Kea, and the snow is visible on Mt. Kilmanjaro in Tanzania which reaches 19,340 feet (eighty percent of its glacier mass has melted away).

Some of these scientific images are digitally enhanced to make details free of haze, light refraction and clouds. Vast panaromas taken by astronauts from the International Space Station are shown in their glory. The first photos taken during the Apollo missions, particulary 8 and 11, showed the whole Earth as seen from Space.

There is a good view of Anarctica's Vinson Massif, as are Russian, European, Australian, South American (Andes and Aconcagua), the Himalayas in India, and the Rockies and Mr. McKinley in North America. Dech is assisted in this presentation to the public by Glaser, a climate researcher who teaches at the University of Freiburg.

Accompanying the breath-taking photographs, we have some personal acounts of mountain climbers such as Alexander Huber, Chris Profit, Stephen Venables and Reinhold Messner. He holds the claim-to-fame of being the first man to climb Mt. Everest 'without supplemental oxygen.' A great admire of Sir Edmund Hillary (the original conqueror who used an ice pick to cut the last steps 'on the roof ridge of the earth,' Messner was the first to climb all fourteen of the world's 8,000 meter peaks and wrote a book about it, ALL FOURTEEN 8,000ers. He worries about global warming, calling the tall mountain ranges "ecological fever thermometers."

Mr. Dech's conclusion, looking down at those same mountains as seen from Space, agrees with Messner: "the view that extends out from a great distance is a gift." This book would make a wonderful gift.

Messner has also written REINHOLD MESSNER, FREE SPIRIT: A CLIMBER'S LIFE, THE NAKED MOUNTAIN, and THE CRYSTAL HORIZON: EVEREST - THE FIRST SOLO ASCENT.

Design and Detail in the Home, by David Linley

David Linley, the son of England's Princess Margaret and photographer Lord Snowdon, has achieved international renown as a designer of fine wood furniture and accessories that reinterpret and transform traditional styles in a refreshingly modern way. The author of two previous Abrams books, Classical Furniture and Extraordinary Furniture, he now expands his vista to look at the aesthetic of entire rooms, showing how a wide range of traditional influences can be blended to create new, visually exciting, yet harmonious interiors.

The entertaining text traces a journey through the home, from the entrance through living, dining, and cooking areas to rooms devoted to work, recreation, rest, and the bath. Each chapter offers creative ways in which these spaces may be adapted to suit their owners' style and the practicalities of modern-day living. The stunning, specially commissioned photographs, which include pictures of Linley's own homes and those of some of his famous clients, reflect his eclectic tastes and his appreciation of the unusual.

DAVID LINLEY founded David Linley Furniture Ltd., now David Linley & Company, in 1985 and currently sells a wide range of furniture and accessories in his flagship London shop and 12 outlets in the United States. Viscount Linley studied at Bedales, a school renowned for its emphasis on arts and crafts, and at Parnham House School for Craftsmen in Wood. Linley is the author of Abrams' Classical Furniture and Extraordinary Furniture.

With a wealth of color photographs and tips from the decorators, even amateurs will feel they can achieve the casual styles shown here in a Malibu beach house, Harlem townhouse, Pittsburgh 18th-century mansion, and Paris apartment, to name a few. Linley, British furniture designer and grandson of Queen Elizabeth II, presents a collection of photographs of his favorite examples of roomsAentries, living rooms, kitchens, etc.Awith his ideas on what makes them appealing and his personal decorating tips.

From Booklist
Who wants to be a famous designer? It doesn't hurt that fine furniture maker and author (Classical Furniture [1993] and Extraordinary Furniture [1996])^B David Linley was born to royalty or that his father, Lord Snowden, is a very accomplished photographer. Nonetheless, Linley has produced a mouthwatering, narrated gallery of home interiors, with rooms of the famed (Sir Elton John and Bill Blass, among others) juxtaposed with those not well-known. Far from the pattern-on-pattern style popularized by Mario Buatta, Linley focuses on simplicity--drama even--as we stroll through the ways that people arrive, live, dine, cook, read, rest, work, and bathe. A few pages of history mixed with personal reminiscences follow with close-ups of details: the family rocking horse, brass hardware, and an assortment of rasps. Finally, his perspectives are fresh, such as his comments that entrance halls were made to showcase "visually exciting but impractical furniture." Bibliography appended. Barbara Jacobs

Review
The first thing to say about Design and Detail in the Home is that - for most people anyway - Linley's idea of 'home' reveals his royal background. As 'a designer of bespoke furniture and accessories that reinterpret and transform traditional styles in a refreshingly modern way", his uniquely personal and highly successful approach is at the top end of the market. He is naturally most at ease and more comfortable when transforming luxurious surroundings - and this is the process lavishly illustrated in this book, in more than 200 sumptuous colour photographs. Not that there's anything wrong with that; but those who seek a practical work of DIY advice are probably looking at the wrong title. Instead Linley indulges his long-standing fascination with craftsmanship and furniture, albeit with one eye always on the English landed tradition, with occasional flashes of true inspiration. This is a volume to be admired and, now and again, gasped at.

This great coffeetable (or should I say teatable) book does not disappoint. I was especially delighted get the inside peak at Linley's own manor - this gentleman has fantastic taste. Some English books are all chintz and old country - this book shows the real thing.

No Wave: Post-Punk. Underground. New York. 1976-1980., by Thurston Moore, Byron Coley

No Wave is the first book to visually chronicle the collision of art and punk in the New York underground of 1976 to 1980. This in depth look at punk rock, new wave, experimental music, and the avant-garde art movement of the 70s and 80s focuses on the true architects of No Wave from James Chance to Lydia Lunch to Glenn Branca, as well as the luminaries that intersected the scene, such as David Byrne, Debbie Harry, Brian Eno, Iggy Pop, and Richard Hell.

This rarely documented scene was the creative stomping ground of young artists and filmmakers from Jean-Michel Basquiat to Jim Jarmusch as well as the musical genesis for the post-punk explosions of Sonic Youth and is here revealed for a new generation of fans and collectors.

Thurston Moore and Byron Coley have selected 150 unforgettable images, most of which have never been published previously, and compiled hundreds of hours of personal interviews to create an oral history of the movement, providing a never-seen-before exploration and celebration of No Wave.

From Publishers Weekly
Art and music come together in this oral account of Manhattan's mid-1970s No Wave music scene. Moore, a founding member of the band Sonic Youth, and Coley, a music writer and editor, identify the likes of Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, DNA, Contortions and Mars as the "core bands" that built No Wave. Shedding light on the personal relationships of these close-knit bands, the surprisingly reserved volume-graced with exquisite black-and-white photos with occasional splashes of poster-art color-also looks at how the devastated state of the city influenced their sound and performances: "As everything's collapsing... the music became the rebellion," says Teenage Jesus's Lydia Lunch in her scowling, astute foreword. Music sometimes described as "a car crash" gets heartfelt and intelligent commentary from the likes of DNA's Ikue Mori: "it wasn't about technique; it was more about new ideas and inspiration." The authors' personal interviews with the movement's other pioneers elicit raw, honest hindsight; along with revealing photographs, this volume takes readers straight into the heart of this zeitgeist.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* In 1977, when New York City was still a place where young artists could survive on nothing but their wits, a group of disparate nihilist geeks and renegades coalesced in the vacuum of the postpunk era to test the boundaries of rock music. It was only later that their collective projects would be ascribed under the umbrella of the No Wave “movement.” If the punk rock of the Ramones and Blondie was a reaction against corporate stadium rock and disco that took rock back to its roots, the No Wave movement was a total break from traditions and conventions that blurred the lines between music, noise, and performance art. Foremost among the progenitors of the angry, acerbic sound was the unlikely pair of Lydia Lunch and James Chance, both featured prominently in photographs and interviews. Four of the bands (the Contortions, Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, Mars, and DNA) were documented on Brian Eno’s seminal No New York album; others (Blinding Headache, the Gynecologists, and Theoretical Girls) just faded into obscurity. Author Moore (of Sonic Youth) has gifted a treasure trove of rare photographs and oral history of a fleeting moment of New York underground that continues to reverberate 30 years later. --David Siegfried

Lesgal...

Vale pelas fotos e o texto é lesgal... Se vc usar ele como "coffee table book" na sua sala de estar e uma menina chegar lá e não te achar um cara sensacional por vc ter ele ao invés de um do Matisse ou um de decoração de interiores é porque ela não vale a pena!!!

Excellent costume resource, as well

This is an elegant large volume, full of paintings of 18th-century interiors and the families who occupied them. The result is an almost year-by-year record of the clothing, furnishings, and daily routine of the British in that era. Includes sketches from the booths at (now vanished) Vauxhall Gardens, Highmore's illustrations for "Pamela", and several detailed tea table settings. Rich resource for clothing information, as well.
