Grade 2-6–The mound builders are among the most mysterious of Native American groups. Flourishing between 800 and 1400 C.E., their center was the great city of Cahokia, located at the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Based on recent research and illustrated with both archival photos and historically accurate drawings, this oversized volume brings their civilization to life via a fictional trip to Cahokia. Little Hawk lives in a stockaded village of wigwams near the shores of Lake Erie. An especially good harvest of furs means a trading journey, and the men decide to take their families with them. Thus, the boy takes a canoe trip down the Sciolo River to the great Ohio to the Mississippi and then north. The engaging pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations are detailed in composition, giving readers much to look at and to absorb. The four pages of photos of artifacts pale in comparison, though they certainly add interest. The story is compelling and instructs simultaneously. An author's note gives factual information on the Cahokia site. Reminiscent of Holling C. Holling's classicPaddle-to-the-Sea (Houghton, 1941) in story line, size, and pictorial style, this book is sure to be popular with students interested in Native American life or archaeology, and it will also draw those who just like a good story. The excitement of a small boy going on a long journey to the big city with his family is captured in a fascinating picture book for older children, but here the destination is a civilization probably unfamiliar to most young readers. The great mound city of Cahokia in what is now Illinois was one of the largest urban centers at its height (the early fourteenth century, when it was bigger than London). Little Hawk and his family travel the Mississippi river with furs and other goods to trade in Cahokia. The two-month journey is not uneventful, but the arrival is even more exciting: the huge population, the buildings of clay with thatched roofs, the platform mounds. Farming tools, and carved and artfully sculpted containers become objects to trade for. The oversize format allows for chock-full paintings, and Lorenz stresses in an informative author's note that the detailed, colorful images showing clothing, tattoos, household objects, homes, and canoes are as accurate as possible. Interesting book that shows a boy's impressions of Cahokia

We are planning a trip to the mounds of the Mississippi culture -- this book gives your kids a sense of what the civilization was like, and what structures may have been ON TOP of the mounds.

Very interesting; easy for kids to relate to. Some good activities, making masks, a cattail doll, crossword puzzle. Great glossary, includes words like: adze, awl, bastion, chert, equinox.

Good companion to a site visit or as a stand-alone

I recently visited the Cahokia mounds with my 8-year-old son and purchased this book afterwards. My son enjoyed the story, which I found to be much better than average for the type of book that it is (primarily educational). I was very impressed with the illustrations, which are sufficiently detailed and engaging to hold a child's attention while being read to. We really enjoyed it.

Excellent book for bringing history alive

We've visited Aztalan, an archeological site similar to Cahokia, many times with our children, but it is really hard to picture what it must have been like when it was inhabited. To them, it has always been just a peaceful field with some strange looking hills and huge fence posts sticking out of the ground where the stockade once was. This book has brought the site to life for them. The story is engaging and easy to relate to. A wonderful book that helps explain a part of our history that is long gone.

Stephen Frink's book Wonders of the Reef: Diving with a Camera struggles with what kind of book it should be: coffee table photo book or UW instructional book. As a result it is not particularly great at either one. There are great photos in here. But it's not really a coffee table book. The photo instruction is very basic almost as if he's afraid to give too much away.

Exceptional introduction to underwater photography

Stephen Frink is one of the most experienced underwater photographers in the world and certainly the most published. Wonders of the Reef is a must-read for anyone interested in underwater photography. The book is divided into two sections. In part one, Photo Opportunities for the Dive Traveler, Stephen relates his experience and recommendations on dive spots in the Caribbean, Red Sea, Pacific, and elsewhere. Anywhere holding something interesting to photograph underwater, the author has been there, likely several times. This section of the book would be valuable to all divers, particularly those looking for their next travel destination. In part two, The Science of Underwater Photography, Stephen shares decades of experience in shooting underwater, covering technique as well as equipment. Advanced underwater shooters will find the level of instruction introductory but for most readers the content is right-on. Stephen has written hundreds of articles over the years on diving as well as photography, and his writing, as well as his photography of course, is exceptional. This book was published before the digital camera era really took off, so digital equipment is not covered here. However, that is minor and nearly everything he relates about lens selection, when to use a dome port, etc. is still valid. In addition to all of the above, Wonders of the Reef is also a coffee-table book with tremendous photographs. The pictures are wonderful, captioned well, and the book is superbly printed.

An incredibly versatile photographer

Good photography isn't easy under the best of cirucmstances. Stephen Frink's work is great despite the myriad problems of underwater photography. Frink is a master of technique with an artist's eye for capturing the moment where the truth of the subject is revealed. Often dramatic, sometimes humorous, but most of all the reader is left with a sense of wonder at the alternately beautiful, haunting and sometimes terrifying world of the reef. Here's a sincere wish that Mr. Frink will give us more books in the days to come.

Rebelling against the dictates of her parents, Betty Parsons escaped for ten years to France, where she became part of the circle of intellectual American expatriates. Subsequent events took her to Hollywood, where she hoped to live by portrait painting and teaching. But this was the 1930s, and even Hollywood was not exempt from the pinch of the Depression. Returning to New York, she took a job dealing in other people's art, but continued to paint and to make sculptures of her own. In 1947 she opened her own gallery, which quickly became known as the leading showcase for the Abstract Expressionists. In the historic photograph of 'The Irascibles,' in LIFE magazine in 1951, all but one of the fifteen artists pictured - including Rothko, de Kooning, Reinhardt, and Motherwell - showed at the Betty Parsons Gallery. The Betty Parsons Gallery, which opened its doors in Manhattan in 1946, quickly became the flagship of abstract expressionism, championing works by Rothko, Pollock et al. Its owner was a determined woman who had rebelled against her New York society family and had divorced a dictatorial husband to seek her fortune as an artist in 1920s and '30s Paris and Hollywood, where she had numerous lesbian affairs. With an eye for originality, Parsons (1900-1982) showcased Joseph Cornell, Barnett Newman and Saul Steinberg. She served as a muse in the "he-man's macho game" of abstract expressionism, all the while craving recognition as a painter and sculptor in her own right. (Regrettably, only one or two examples of her own work are shown here) Tennis partner of Greta Garbo, friend of Janet Flanner and Alexander Calder in Paris, Parsons led a charmed existence, and this richly illustrated biographical profile by a longtime friend captures her many-faceted, whirlwind life.

An Overlooked Biography

Although this volume was formatted, in its 1991 publication, as a coffee-table art book, it really is a biography with some color and mostly B&W reproductions of Parson's watercolors and the art she acquired from the impressive stable of painters and sculptors at her gallery. Few of the reproductions take advantage of the oversized page format and the biography would have read more comfortably in a standard book size. Nevertheless, Hall offers a engaging look at the gallerist's life and, in explaining Parson's naively derived ideas about abstract art, provides a refreshingly different perspective about AbEx in clear, readable language.

Although Peggy Guggenheim has dominated the biography sections pertaining to gallerist lives, there are fascinating stories in these biographies of lesser-heralded but nonetheless important art figures such as Edith Halpert (The Girl With The Gallery) and Betty Parsons. Hall has done a fine job meshing the personal (early life, society escapades, professional houseguest, sexual infidel) with the professional (artist, gallerist, later feted speaker) into an interesting, and amusing, life story.

Twice a year, Gurung tribesmen of west-central Nepal enter the jungle in search of honey. Valli and Summers, freelance photojournalists, lived with the honey hunters for eight months and here document this ancient tradition. They tell of the band of nine honey hunters, led by the 63-year-old Mani Lal whose responsibility is unique: he alone descends a bamboo ladder hundreds of feet down sheer rock faces to find the hives of giant black bees nestled on the cliff walls. Once he discovers a nestwhich may be as large as four by six feethe drives the bees out with smoke, and then, still suspended by the ladder over the cliff face, dislodges the hive with bamboo poles. The hive is then lowered via pulleys to the other hunters waiting below, and Mani Lal climbs on to locate another nest. The oversize volume is replete with large color photographs that detail every aspect of the honey hunt; also included are portraits of the Gurung and, somewhat incongruously, pictures of hunters trapping more conventional preyantelope, deer and wolves. The photographs, though often beautiful, are more fascinating as anthropology than as individual works of art.

End of an Era

A stunning journey into a subculture that was unknown to the outside world until photographer Valli and writer Summers provided this coverage -- the Nepalese Gurung Tribe's twice a year jungle honey hunts.

We have here color photographs of remarkable texture and detail, composed and lit with such beauty that it seems improbable that they are journalistic documents snapped on the fly in the field.

The book maintains that this honey hunting tradition is now over, that the "men of the forest," hunter/gatherers have now turned to farming. Something that the principal hunter, the elderly Mani Kal, disdains as "mixing dung with the earth."

The production from publisher Abrams is typically of high quality -- an oversized (tall!) trade paperback, with a 9 page essay, 85 full page (or double page) photographs, and a catalogue raisonne of sorts -- 3 pages with small b&w reproduction of the color photographs, with explanatory captions.

There is also a Thames & Hudson black and white edition with the same title -- you want the Abrams.

Can't Go Wrong

This book was recommended as a Father's Day gift in a magazine and being that my Dad LOVES golf, I thought it was a sure thing. It ended up being way more than that. The book is beautiful! Don't tell anyone but it is way underpriced. It looks like a $50 coffee table book. My mom thought I had paid $80 to $100 for it. My Dad loves it so much that he displayed it on top of tv in the living room. He was giddy to find many courses in the book that he had played. The only downside I could see was that my Dad may find numerous golf courses around the world that he now feels he has to go and play.

365 days, but not all 365 photos are worthy

The majority of the photos in this book are fantastic, but some of them are a bit drab, be it because of the locations or the colors of some of the courses. But overall, this is a fantastic book - it's sturdy, presented well, and full of lots of great photos. It's a shame all of them weren't consistently gorgeous - a few of the photos seem a bit amateurish and the locations aren't all as spectacular as I'd have expected.

Prizes well received

I purchased Golf of the World: 365 Days as prizes for our recent Ladies Open Day not only did they look fabulous on the trophy table they were the most sort after prizes on the day! The ladies who won them were delighted and have since contacted me telling me of the enjoyment they have given them (with photos to die for and destinations to dream about!) In all cases they are taking pride of place on their coffee tables with the added bonus of being able to visit a beautiful course whenever they wish at the mere flip of a page.

It begins with a chapter on hardware, which details all the basic tools--from floral shears to floral wire and tape--that you'll need for cutting and arranging flowers, as well as advice on choosing and caring for vases and other containers. The "Handling Flowers" chapter explains the proper way to cut, condition, and care for flowers to ensure the most attractive and long-lasting arrangements. But to describe this book as merely instructional is an oversimplification, for T. K. I use this book all the time!

This book is a great resource for anyone with a cutting garden, a love of flowers, or a romantic husband. It's full of great tips for all different types of flowers and has allowed me to increase the longevity of the bouquets I receive.
I liked it so much that I bought one for mother's day.
The only thing I didn't like about this book is that it shows flowers being cut in air when they should always be cut underwater!

About the Author
Octavio Paz (1914-1998) was born in Mexico City. He wrote many volumes of poetry, as well as a prolific body of remarkable works of nonfiction on subjects as varied as poetics, literary and art criticism, politics, culture, and Mexican history. He was awarded the Jerusalem Prize in 1977, the Cervantes Prize in 1981, and the Neustadt Prize in 1982. He received the German Peace Prize for his political work, and finally, the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1990.

Eliot Weinberger is an essayist and translator, the editor of The New Directions Anthology of Classical Chinese Poetry, and the series editor of Calligrams: Writings from and on China (New York Review Books and Chinese University of Hong Kong Press). He lives in New York City.

A stunning collection from a powerful and vivid poet. Paz's sense of urgency and perception is almost elemental.

It's been years since I've read Paz, and his poetry is just as strong as I remember.

In fact I'm going to go out on a limb and say that no modern poet with the possible exception of Allan Ginsburg has such a rich and powerful sense of description as Paz. The opening poem 'Mutra' especially, is just a gorgeous overflow of reveries, symbols and perceptual shifts. It alone makes this book worth buying.

Paz's repertoire of images is unbeatable precisely because of how elemental it is. The sun, the moon, water, stones, darkness, sunlight...he constantly returns to these primordial sensations and always manages to make them feel vital and lived in, no matter how often he uses them. I highly recommend this, or really any of his collections of poetry.

Poetic Ambassador

A Tale of Two Gardens is a collection of poems dealing with Nobel laureate Octavio Paz relationship with the great nation of India. He made many trips there over the years. Paz was also the Mexican ambassador to India. (He resigned the position in 1968 to protest government assault on protesters.) There were still later sojourns to India afterwards. Mutra is a really strong poem. It is a flower that grows with each subsequent reading. Few cities have ever been so aptly honoured. Another of the poems I like is The Balcony. Wind From All Compass Points is another standout. The whole collection is a grand achievement. India is the most enduring civilization on the planet. It is only fitting that one of the most enduring poets of the twentieth century should write a poetic tribute. These poems were written over a period of forty years. The love and passion Paz feels for Indian culture and peoples is recurrent in these poems. This was truly his second home. It was the second garden so to speak. And from this love of India came a great gift of poetry for the rest of the world to read and know.

This macabre but beautiful work, Les Chants de Maldoror, has achieved a considerable reputation as one of the earliest and most extraordinary examples of Surrealist writing.

Maldoror is a long narrative prose poem which celebrates the principle of Evil in an elaborate style and with a passion akin to religions fanaticism. The French poet-critic Georges Hugnet has written of Lautréamont: "He terrifies, stupefies, strikes dumb. He could look squarely at that which others had merely given a passing glance." When first published in 1868-69, Maldoror went almost unnoticed. But in the 1890s the book was rediscovered and hailed as a work of genius by such eminent writers as Huysmans, Léon Block, Maeterlinck, and Rémy de Gourmont. Later still, Lautréamont was to be canonized as one of their principal "ancestors" by the Paris surrealists. This edition, translated by Guy Wernham, includes also a long introduction to a never-written, or now lost, volume of poetry. Thus, except for a few letters, it gives all the surviving literary work of Lautréamont.

About the Author
Little is known of the author of Maldoror, Isidore Ducasse, self-styled Comte de Lautréamont, except that he was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1846 and died in Paris at the age of twenty-four.

Guy Wernham, perhaps best known for his definitive translation of Maldoror, was associated with the Beat Poets.

Puts the ahhhh in dada....

You should own this book...and you should buy it right now if you don't own it.
Lautremont's epic prose poem dedicated to the subject of evil is probably one of the best surrealist works we've been lucky enough to have bestowed on us. It jumps all over the map, but it never once loses steam or sags under the weight of its subject matter. This is actually the only book I stopped reading halfway through and went back to the beginning so I could underline all the good parts. And there are a LOT of good parts. Even if you could give a whit about evil, you must sit in awe of the pure grace and strength of Lautremont's writing. It's like a pie made from the flesh of angels.
So dig in.

Holy cruelty

On one's first encounter with Lautremont's "Maldoror", it will appear a virtually formless, incoherent and incompetent work -- "a compilation of a sick mind" -- until, that is, one becomes habituated to its style. Hailed as one of the pioneering works of surrealism, this is undoubtedly one of the most original and explosive meditations on pure evil. Lautremont's glorification of crime and murder, his blasphemy, his rhapsodic celebration of revolt, are, without a doubt, unsurpassed. Never has a book more malignantly oozed more evil, misanthropy and menace. It will jar any so-called "decent" person out of his/her comfortably smug composure.

the yummiest, sickest, most dementedly surreal book ever

"maldoror" is the best surrealist anti literature has to offer, without a doubt. the work of an obviously, eh...unconventional? psyche, it viciously tears a gaping hole in sentimentality and anything else that does not reek of absolute rebellion. if you've ever felt even the slightest rancor against society and the hollow men surrounding you all day every day, you can be sure that you will take a liking to this book. bataille and sade are great, but can't hold a candle to little isidore. perversely delicious.
