About the Author
New Directions has been the primary publisher of Ezra Pound in the U.S. since the founding of the press when James Laughlin published New Directions in Prose and Poetry 1936. That year Pound was fifty-one. In Laughlin s first letter to Pound, he wrote: Expect, please, no fireworks. I am bourgeois-born (Pittsburgh); have never missed a meal. . . . But full of noble caring for something as inconceivable as the future of decent letters in the US. Little did Pound know that into the twenty-first century the fireworks would keep exploding as readers continue to find his books relevant and meaningful.

What's in a name?

Neophytes take note: This is a page-for-page reprint of _The Letters of Ezra Pound, 1907-1941_, edited by D. D. Paige and published by Harcourt in 1950. Only the title has been changed. No need to consult the earlier, more comprehensive-sounding publication if this New Directions edition is readier to hand.

Essential Reading

Ezra Pound is central to poetry, translation, literary magazines, Modernism, literary criticism--you name it in the Twentieth Century. This collection has his most important letters. Produced while he was in Saint Elizabeth's mental hospital in Washington--he was declared insane rather than standing trial for treason for his propaganda for Mussolini during World War Two--the collection goes light on his political and economic letters--his friends wanted to remind us of his importance as a literary figure--just as well since his political and economic ideas can be tiresome and appear in many other places. He writes to Yeats, William Carlos Williams, James Joyce, T.S. Eliot, Harriet Monroe, H.D., Wyndham Lewis, Robert Frost, Louis Zukofsky, and just about all the major literary figures and editors in the the years from World War One to World War Two. His comments as an editor and a practicing poet and translator should draw the most attention. He was important to Poetry magazine in establishing itself as an essential literary magazine and played a crucial role for the Dial, The Little Review, The Egoist, and other magazines whether as an acknowledged or unacknowledged editor. He spends a lot of time promoting his friends (see list of the poets and writers above--he helped many get into print or into the public eye). The book was first published in 1950 but remains the most central of the many collections of Pound's letters published in the following decades. Whether you have an interest in Pound or American and British Twentieth Century poetry, you need this book.
