Amazon.com Review
The vast Sonoran Desert, which stretches from southern Arizona and southeastern California far into Mexico, offers mysteries aplenty to uninitiated travelers and longtime desert rats alike. Pulitzer prize-winning photographer Jack Dykinga has been wandering its lonelier stretches for years, and the images he conjures up in The Sonoran Desert make for a rare and bounteous feast. He has a special fondness for cactus and boojum studded horizons, withered landscapes at high noon, and the arid shores of the Sea of Cortez, and no one has captured the essence of the place quite so well. The text by Charles Bowden, himself a noted desert traveler, is an added attraction to a first-rate collection of photographs.

"Beauty is in the light"
By Polo
If you think of the deserts as places of emptiness and boredom, have a look at this superb book! The subject was not easy but Jack Dykinga is mastering the art of using the light and the shapes to make us enter a new dimension. His breathtaking large format photographs plead in favor of preserving the wilderness in it's original state and presents us to it's amazing vegetal hosts. After seeing this book, you will never ever think of the Sonoran Desert as an "uninhabited place".

The beauty of the desert captured in stunning photographs
By Ronald Scheer
This is a stunning book of photography, with about 120 color plates of the Sonoran desert, taken by photographer Jack W. Dykinga. Besides Arizona, locations include Mexico, Baja California, the shoreline of the Sea of Cortez, and Anza-Borrego and Joshua Tree National Monument in southern California.
There's no mistaking that it's a dry, hot region, but it's also clear that there is plant life almost everywhere. There are photographs of landscapes of sand, rock and sky, with saguaro, barrel cactus, ocotillo, and many desert flowers. There is not a sign of human life (until you reach the last half dozen pages where the editor has included several shots of blight: graffiti, a junkyard, a concrete water channel). Many photos are taken at sunrise or sundown, capturing glowing colors and shadows. A few are taken after snowfall.
The text, by Charles Bowden, is personal and impressionistic, with a Sierra Club point of view. He emphasizes the desert's resistance to any but the Native populations, who lived here in harmony with the landscape for millennia before the exploitation of European explorers. To these, in their crudest manifestations, are compared the more reckless schemes of modern-day developers. The closing chapter is an appreciation of wilderness advocate Edward Abbey. In my opinion, an error on the part of the book designer was to set these long essays as full pages of italic type, which makes them difficult to read.
As a companion volume, I recommend Joseph Wood Krutch's "Desert Year," an account of a year spent in the Sonoran desert near Tucson. Although a different desert, there's also Abbey's "Desert Solitaire."

How to Become Un-jaded About Desert Landscape Photography
By Eileen S
Having grown up with Arizona Highways magazine, I had, over the years, lost interest in the same old lovely-but-humdrum Meunch brothers photography and lackluster text commonly given to the Sonoran desert. Then I saw the cover of "The Sonoran Desert" and everything changed as I leafed through it. Bowden's text is intensely thought-provoking; the text is spare and rich at the same time, like his subject matter, and Dykinga's photographs show the Sonoran desert in the only way it should EVER be photographed. The photos capture a depth of the desert I've never seen in print before. Dykinga shows like nobody else the juxtaposition of textures and colors, the whole feel of the Sonoran desert in all its glory- and there's a whole lot of glory there if you take the time to look for it. Dykinga clearly does.

The Agony and the Eggplant, by Walter Hogan

The Agony and the Eggplant is the first book-length study of author, illustrator, and radio personality, Daniel Pinkwater. Pinkwater began writing and illustrating children's books in 1970 and has been a prolific author for three decades. He has written over 70 books altogether: more than fifty picture books, a dozen books for middle-grade or intermediate readers, half a dozen books for adolescents, an adult novel, and several books of nonfiction.

Pinkwater is a humorist, and many of his stories involve science fiction or fantasy themes. He is often compared with Douglas Adams and Kurt Vonnegut; his style is often likened to Monty Python and Mad magazine. Pinkwater's fiction has often been described as "wacky" and "zany;" The Agony and the Eggplant will go beyond those cliches to place Pinkwater as a classical satirist, an American humorist, and a master of children's literature. Sprinkled with quotes and observations from Pinkwater, Hogan gives us a highly entertaining look at the man responsible for some of the most unique young adult fiction on the market.

From School Library Journal
Hogan does an admirable job of getting behind the humor, zany remarks, and fabrications of Pinkwater. He includes sufficient biographical information, but the most important part of the book is the evaluation/criticism of his subject's work. Subtitle and series name aside, the various chapters follow Pinkwater's career from writing picture books to young adult novels. Quotations from him on various aspects of his writing are interspersed as Hogan skillfully combines critical comments and allows the creativity and genius of his subject to shine forth. The bibliography includes the author's work chronologically and by genre, as well as secondary sources, Web sites, and reviews. This well-researched and well-footnoted volume offers librarians new insight into this popular author's work.

...rare funny and fascinating... (VOYA)

As entertaining as the works of this tongue-in-cheek-author...This title should be in all secondary libraries, as should Pinkwater's philosophy, "Think for yourself, educate yourself, form you own opinions, and don't let the 'experts' tell you what when or how to think." (Catholic Library World)

Any high school student who must do a report on an author, will find this book an engaging and enjoyable resource. Highly recommended. (The Book Report)

Breathtaking
By E. Raptis
As an anglophile and collector of British coffee table books, I'd like to say that this book is just terrific. The format is unusual with the short spine and wide pages and shows off the 360 degree photos to good advantage. While not all the photos are of the 360 degree variety, all of them are at the very least interesting and at best absolutely breathtaking. All the historical sites are accounted for as well as some more obscure places like Brixton Market and the Horniman Museum. If you like unusual color photos of this historically fascinating and architecturally beautiful city, this book is for you. It is atypical and wondrous to look upon.

From Library Journal
It's May 15 and word comes down?"There's money left in the book budget; spend it by July 1 or lose it." Do you a) make a beeline for Library Journal or b) refer to your collection development policy? Library director Wood and library science professor Hoffmann maintain, "it is impossible to say how many libraries in the United States have collection development policies..." but that "most of the writers cited in this book believe that the majority of libraries do not have one." The authors wrote this handbook for those librarians needing to "study, develop, rewrite, or evaluate collection development policies." Part 1 is an excellent treatise on policy rationale, policy implementation, and policy components. The material presented is not new but a clear and relatively concise (73 pages) update on collection development. Part 2 includes representative collection development policies of academic, public, school, state, special, and other libraries. Library Development Policies is very similar in scope and length to Elizabeth Futas's Collection Development Policies and Procedures (Professional Reading, LJ 3/15/95) as well as Michael R. Gabriel's Collection Development and Collection Evaluation: A Sourcebook (Professional Reading, LJ 6/1/95). For those in the process of writing or revising a collection development policy, this is an excellent time- and energy-saving resource.?Janet Brewer, Murray State Univ. Lib., Ky.

Review
A school or district would find many useful models here to avoid reinventing policy statements. (Booklist, October 1, 2007)

This useful book is the second volume in the Good Policy, Good Practice series edited by Kirsti Nelson and Martin Dowding. It expands upon the issues and practices the authors explored in their 1996 book, Library Collection Development Policies: A Reference and Writers' Handbook....Because it includes information on the unique issues related to electronic resources, this title would be useful for both experienced and new librarians. (Spring 2008, Vol. 47, Issue 3 Reference and User Services Quarterly)

Hoffman (library science, Sam Houston State U.) and Wood (U. of South Alabama Library System) offer this book for library school students and professionals on the compilation, revision, and implementation of collection development policies. The book, along with a companion volume, is an outgrowth of their Library Collection Development Policies: A Reference and Writers' Handbook from 1996. The present volume addresses advances in technology by including new policy examples in different library settings from North America. They present policy components that are standardized sections most likely to be found in school library development statements, based on a survey of many written and online policies. These address elements that create a blueprint for building library holdings, ethical and legal issues relating to the use of digital resources, and digital information within the context of traditional library operations. (Reference and Research Book News, August 2007)

The contents of this book are based on an excellent idea. (Technicalities, July/August 2008)

Mary, by Martina Degl'Innocenti, Stella Marin

The fourth book in Abrams'  successful series that includes Saints, Angels, and Myths, this volume tells the story of one of the most popular religious figures in the world--the Virgin Mary. Beginning with biblical and apocryphal traditions concerning Mary's place among the Bible's other great women (Eve in particular), art historians Martina Degl'Innocenti and Stella Marinone illustrate Mary's life with paintings from the early Christian period in Rome to the 20th century, including some unusual contemporary works from China, Russia, and America.
Mary's unique position among saints is examined here as episodes from her life are portrayed through centuries of artistic movements in the West, as well as representations from the East. Packed with over 350 works of art in full color, along with some full-spread enlargements to show iconographic detail, this book is a perfect gift for anyone interested in the life and imagery of the Virgin Mary.

Love this book
By paperdollmom
I came across this in our local bookstore, and fell in love with it. It is somewhat a combination of art and biblical info. Every other page is a piece of art, with the opposite page telling about the picture and how it relates to Mary. There is generally scriptures listed for you to look up as well if you wanted further reading. The artwork displayed within the book is beautiful, along with a lot of symbolism between Mary and other women in the Bible that I hadn't realized. A nice book to have! I would, however, recommend having some sort of a magnifying bookmark or something like that, as it is a smaller book, and some of the details in the pictures is hard to see.

Beautiful, but Catholics do NOT worship Mary!
By Peggy Bowes
As an orthodox Catholic who is very devoted to the Blessed Mother, I enjoy collecting books about Mary and studying the various ways she has been represented in art. I came across this book in a chain bookstore and had to buy it, primarily for the beautiful artwork. I do want to clarify the wording on the back of the book-- the author (or publisher?) uses the phrase "worship of the Blessed Virgin," which is NOT correct! Catholics never have and never will worship Mary. Instead, we HONOR Mary as the Mother of God and the greatest of saints. I don't know if the authors are Catholic or not, but everything I have read so far coincides with my Marian study and research (with the exception of the "worship" error).

That said, the book is still very worthwhile. It is thoroughly researched and anyone interested in learning more about Mary will enjoy reading about her Old Testament archetypes, family and childhood (based on apochryphal writings), her symbols and icons, her life with Jesus and role in the gospels, her portrayal in the East, and her devotions under various titles. Each page of the book has a work of art on one side and a short description of the Marian aspect of the painting or sculpture on the other. Naturally, the details of each work of art are included in case the reader would like to investigate further.

See before ordering.
By J. Kroulaid
This is a wonderful book with informative and inspiring text and pictures of beautiful quality. But be aware that it is a very unusual size book. It is about four inches by six inches and two inches thick. I recommend seeing it before ordering. You may find it awkward and difficult to hold and read.

The Miracle Cures of Dr. Aira, by César Aira, Katherine Silver

Aira's latest concerns a reluctant but powerful doctor who finally decides to use his healing powers to help a hopeless patient.

César Aira’s newest novel in English is not about a conventional doctor. Single,in his forties, and poor, Dr. Aira is a skeptic. His personality ― his weaknesses, whims, and pet peeves ― is summed up in a series of digressions and regressions but he has a very special gift for miracles. He no longer cares about miracles, however, and has no faith in them. Perhaps he is even a little ashamed about his supernatural powers. Such is Dr. Aira, who also has to confront his arch-enemy― chief of the Pinero Hospital, Dr. Actyn ― who is constantly trying to prove that Dr. Aira is a charlatan. Poor Dr. Aira is indeed a worker of miracles, but César Aira ― the magesterial author ― sends the very human doctor stumbling toward the biggest trap of all, in this magical book.

Review
C sar Aira's novels are the narrative equivalent of the Exquisite Corpse, that Surrealist parlor game in which players add to drawings or stories without knowledge of previous or subsequent additions. Wildly heterogeneous elements are thrown together, and the final result never fails to surprise and amuse.

C sar Aira's is a fine short book, imaginative and entertaining, but finally and essentially, it's not about the size, it's about the transmogrified truths, the art of the prose and its necessity.

Aira's literary significance, like that of many other science fiction writers, comes from how he pushes us to question the porous line between fact and fantasy, to see it not only as malleable in history, but also blurred in the everyday. The engrossing power of his work, though, comes from how he carries out these feats: with the inexhaustible energy and pleasure of a child chasing after imaginary enemies in the park. "

Fantastical, quirky, and delightful
By R. M. Peterson
César Aira may be the most prolific and the most distinctive living writer within my reading universe. He has published at least sixty works of fiction (most of novella length), and he continues to produce two to four works a year. Somewhere I read that he begins a novella with only a rough idea of setting and theme, and then he simply writes, with very little revision, letting the work develop (or not) as his instincts guide him. At times, this leads the reader (or this reader) into bewilderment and even isolated patches of boredom, but in general his approach engenders curiosity over where Aira's quirky stream of consciousness will head next, and sometimes "next" turns out to be a delightful surprise.

THE MIRACLE CURES OF DR. AIRA was the seventh of Aira's works (there since has been an eighth) to be translated into English and published by New Directions. It is the fourth that I have read, and the one I enjoyed the most. For a long stretch in the middle of the novella, however, I was dissatisfied with it, as I had become badly disoriented. I sensed that the tale as a whole was an allegory of some sort, but of what? Everything came together in the last thirteen pages, and I trust I am not irredeemably spoiling matters when I say that Dr. Aira's miracle cures turn out to be works of fiction. What do they cure? Are they cures for everyone or just for Dr. Aira (who is the very thinly disguised alter ego of César Aira)? These are the sorts of questions I leave for other readers. For myself, I will have them in mind when I next read MIRACLE CURES - something I intend to do soon, as it only eighty pages (and hence can be read in two hours) and is highly intriguing.

By jafrank
This is probably the most philosophically dense of Aira's short little wonders I've read. I don't think more than maybe 5-6 pages of it are in anyway concerned with the 'plot' per se, and while I read Aira precisely for his gorgeous metaphysical reveries about every day life, about time and memory and space and simultaneity... somehow a book composed of nothing but those heady things just doesn't work for me.

If you've never read him before, I would say start with "An episode in the life of a landscape painter" or "The literary conference." Those books are all the more powerful for their more plot driven structure. This was just a bit too navel-gazing for me.

Wordless Books: The Original Graphic Novels, by David A. Beronä

“Wordless books” were stories from the early part of the twentieth century told in black and white woodcuts, imaginatively authored without any text. Although woodcut novels have their roots spreading back through the history of graphic arts, including block books and playing cards, it was not until the early part of the twentieth century that they were conceived and published. Despite its short-lived popularity, the woodcut novel had an important impact on the development of comic art, particularly contemporary graphic novels with a focus on adult themes.

Scholar David A. Beronä examines the history of these books and the art and influence of pioneers like Frans Masereel, Lynd Ward, Otto Nückel, William Gropper, Milt Gross, and Laurence Hyde (among others). The images are powerful and iconic, and as relevant to the world today as they were when they were first produced. Beronä places these artists in the context of their time, and in the context of ours, creating a scholarly work of important significance in the burgeoning field of comics and comics history.

A Serious Look into Wordless Books
By Kurt Brian Webb
Wordless Books: The Original Graphic Novels by the prolific writer David Beronä is a gem filled with informative serious content for the novice and well seasoned in the woodcut novel genre. This beautiful book is a visual treat to read with images around every turn of a page. In Beronä's past articles on the topic and now in this book, it is always interesting to read his interpretation on these masterful wordless books. Many familiar with this genre have seen the illustrations from his book, however there is freshness in seeing these pictures in this new context. Increasing the print size on some of the pages is a nice touch and lets the viewer see things in the prints that they more than likely have missed in the past. Numbered specific references in the text allow the reader to be deeply taken into important parts of the books described in separate chapters. The conclusion convincingly points to the role these wordless masterpieces have shaped current graphic novels. Having scans of dust jackets from many of the original editions in the ending section is a very exceptional way to end the book. Many have looked forward to David Beronä's book for a long time and there is no disappointment in any way, shape or form! It has it all!

Oddly enough, could use more words and fewer pictures
By Karl Janssen
In the early 20th century, a few innovative artists created visionary pictorial novels composed entirely of illustrations. The undisputed masters of the genre were the Belgian woodcut artist Frans Masereel and the American wood engraver Lynd Ward. These two artists, and a small group of followers inspired by their work, created wordless narratives of exceptional artistic and literary quality, which served as the precursors to the graphic novel as we know it today. In this 2008 study of the subject, David A. Beronä examines the work of eleven artists whose books were published from 1918 to 1951. In recent years, no other scholar has done as much to draw attention to and bring deserved respect to these influential works of art than Beronä. If anyone is qualified to write the definitive history of this art form, it's him. Unfortunately, this isn't it.

This book contains less than 45 pages of text. Chapter one, entitled "Historical Background," is only two and a half pages long. Each artist gets about two paragraphs of biographical information, with the exception of Masereel and Ward, who maybe get a page each. 90 percent of the text consists of Beronä summarizing the plots of the books, complete with spoilers. For each work, Beronä's synopsis is supported by roughly ten percent of each book's illustrations, from which he makes points about the artist's technique and choice of imagery. There are a few cases where he makes some insightful comments in regard to historical context, but mostly he's not telling you anything you wouldn't figure out from looking at the original works themselves. If you are interested enough in this art form to purchase a book like this, wouldn't you rather get the reprint editions of these wordless novels and "read" them yourself, rather than be told second-hand everything that takes place within their covers?

You can't go wrong with a book full of these stunning and powerful images, and they are reproduced beautifully. But the question is, how much of an education on the subject does this book really provide? What enthusiasts of woodcut novels and wordless books could really use is an in-depth scholarly study of the subject, with more concrete information on the artist's lives, the development of their techniques, the artists and writers that influenced them and who they in turn influenced, the creation and publication of their wordless books, and the historical context in which this art form was created. This should be supported by illustrations that show examples of the art, without giving you so many pictures, taken out of context, as to hinder your enjoyment of reading the actual works. If the purpose of Wordless Books is to inspire a readership of these works, how is this purposed served by telling us which characters live or die? The experience one gets from Beronä's study is roughly equivalent to trying to learn about the history of American literature through a series of Reader's Digest condensed books.

Beronä should be commended for his career of work on this subject, but all the promotional copy I've read on this book leads one to believe it is a definitive scholarly study of wordless books, which it is not. Instead, it's like reading a collection of the two-page introductions to the Dover reprint editions of many of these works. So why not just collect the Dover reprints, or seek out the works of these great artists through your local university library?

Perfect introduction to woodcut novels and wordless books
By Austin Kleon
David Berona has been studying wordless books for 20 years, but only in the past couple of years has the "graphic novel boom" of the industry allowed him to publish his research. In this handsome book he presents an introduction and sampler of the form's greatest works and artists in a clear, useful, and unpretentious manner. The images included are crisp and beautiful. This is a must-purchase for any fan of comics or narrative art.

Sadly, some victims internalize their frustration by harming themselves or become bullies as well. But if young people agree that bullying is so devastating, why does it continue? Most importantly, how can it be stopped?

In Bullying: The Ultimate Teen Guide, Mathangi Subramanian addresses these and other questions about a major issue for young adults and their families. Drawing on stories from young teens around the country, this volume uncovers the social pressures and individual choices that lead to violence. The author surveys effective state, local, and national anti-bullying policies and provides examples of teens throughout the nation whose leadership and courage have helped stop violence. This volume also contains exercises and strategies for young adults to employ that can pave the way for social action. Topics covered in this book include:

  • What makes a bully
  • The impact bullying has on victims, perpetrators, and witnesses
  • Types of bullying, such as sexual harassment and dating violence
  • Cyberbullying
  • What to do if you are bullied
  • Strategies to combat bullying at school and elsewhere
  • Resources

Featuring a diverse collection of teen voices, this book is designed to help teens take immediate action both individually and collectively. The advice and exercises will not only help teens think critically about bullying but will also empower them to change both themselves and the circumstances that foster abuse in their schools and communities. Bullying: The Ultimate Teen Guide is a much-needed resource to help stem the tide of this social epidemic.

From School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up—Subramanian focuses not only on the bully but also on some of the many issues that contribute to and result from bullies in society. In the first chapter, the fundamentals and types of bullying provide an introduction and background as a basis for subsequent chapters about the perpetrator, the victim, the witnesses, as well as types of bullying, including bias-based harassment, cyberbullying, sexual harassment and dating violence, and the adult bully. The book examines how teens who suffer from violence tend to develop bullying characteristics. The author addresses various types of bullying that develop from gender issues and reinforces the need for positive change, the creation of policies, and, of course, action. Many text boxes provide a more personal look through the stories of teens who have been victims and provide additional information on school programs and individuals who have attempted to counteract the actions of bullies and sources for assistance. The discussion questions, variety of activities, an occasional black-and-white photo, and copious notes at the conclusion of each chapter complement this informative, easy-to-read text.—Susan Shaver, Hemingford Public Schools, NE

From Booklist
With almost half of all teens reporting that they have been bullied, and as many reporting that they have been a bully themselves, there are few teenage issues more pertinent to address. After introducing such bullying basics as passive and active bullying, violence, power, and identity, this entry in the It Happened to Me series dedicates individual chapters to bullies, victims, and witnesses and explores what influences each group’s involvement in bullying. Subramanian then focuses on the various types—bias-based bullying (targeting victims because of their ethnicity, race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, etc.), cyberbullying, sexual harassment, dating violence, and even adult bullying of students and children—and how each can be identified and prevented. The final chapters discuss how individuals can try to end bullying through actions and laws. Real-life profiles bring immediacy to the topic, while questionnaires, related literature, and lists of resources provide further connections. An approachable style makes this guide accessible for both research and personal needs. Grades 6-9. --Angela Leeper

Well-voiced and supported with credible incidents, Subramanian’s guide speaks to the source and elimination of abusive situations. The text covers the subject objectively and calmly. Even advice on adult violators notes that predatory grownups assail youths out of anger, fear, and insecurity. Pictures enhance focal concepts, as with the handshake that illustrates allies on p. 197. Advice on texting reminds the reader that caution protects both sender and receiver. Analysis of complex concepts, particularly the passive bystander, relies on straightforward diction to account for failure to intervene to protect or rescue a victim. The author limits recommended readings to recent sources. The glossary amplifies definitions, explaining such hopeful social mechanisms as restorative justice and lever of change. This work should aid the parent, teacher, librarian, and school counselor as well as the vulnerable teen. (VOYA)

From Kirkus Reviews
The ever-rapacious Nazis looted staggering quantities of great art and antiques from the nations they occupied. Much of it found its way back to Germany, and following the Allied victory, many thousands of rare (and some priceless) pieces were identified, and returned to the countries from which they had been taken. But not all of the paintings, statues, and archaeological treasures were recovered: Some were taken by Soviet troops and disappeared into Russia. Still others slipped into the black market in western Europe, and were snapped up by wealthy (if unprincipled) collectors. A 1995 symposium at the Bard Graduate Center for Studies in the Decorative Arts brought together European and American investigators and historians to discuss both the the Nazi thefts and the current state of knowledge of the whereabouts of the many still missing treasures. Those papers are reprinted here. While the pieces are detailed, dry, and likely to be of most interest to specialists, there are some extraordinary stories, most prominently the description of the recent rediscovery of ``Priam's treasure,'' excavated by Schliemann at Troy and hidden since WW II in a Russian museum. The Man in the Wall: Poems by James Laughlin, by James Laughlin

James Laughlin has been called the American Catullus. Like that most Greek of ancient Latin poets, he elevates his everyday subjects with wit and clarity of language. Love and hate, death and aging, politics, literature, travel, the horrors of war - Laughlin's muse speaks of all these things with a fresh directness that makes his poems both timeless and contemporary. The founder of New Directions, Laughlin's efforts as publisher and poet have been to prolong and extend the old poetic traditions. Poetry for him is, in Gertrude Stein's phrase, a "continuous present" in all times and cultures. Laughlin developed his distinctive tight metrics with the advice of William Carlos Williams. A longer, comical line is found in the recent poems of Laughlin's doppelganger, Hiram Handspring. The Man in the Wall follows Laughlin's recent Collected Poems (Moyer Bell Limited).

Color for Interior Design, by Ethel Rompilla, New York School of Interior Design

This is a comprehensive introduction to working with colour in interior settings. Part I is a history of interiors from the point of view of their colour systems. It spans a breadth of periods and locations, from prehistory through to the Renaissance in Italy and Greece; the 16th-18th Centuries in France, England, and America; and on, to the 19th Century and beyond. Among the most notable interiors which are covered are Fresco of Elegant Ladies from the Palace of Knossos, Crete; The Black Wall from the Roman villa at Boscotrecase near Pompeii; Le Corbusier's reflecting blue wall at the Villa Savoye; James McNeill Whistler's Peacock Room, at the Freer Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; and lastly, The Tassell House, Brussels Part II is an easy-to-understand outline of the basics of colour theory and its underlying science, including optics, prisms, light physics, and colour wheels. It addresses such topics as the symbolism and psychology of colour, as well as more practical matters of pigments and dyes. Part III is a practical guide to the would-be decorator on the use of colour to enhance interior settings and to create specific effects. It has practical and easy to use advice on colour schemes as well as a discussion on the ongoing nature of trends.

From Publishers Weekly
Whether it was in a cave, an early Minoan palace or an American Federalist home, people have always looked to bring color and design into their living spaces. Both science and psychology influence the art of marrying style and pigment: "Nature has always provided the visual stimulation of color, light and texture, while history has shown the human need for variety and change," writes Rompilla in her breathless survey of 3000 years of architecture, art history, color theory and science. Complementing an eclectic assortment of 125 illustrations (including 95 in color), the text is concise, lucid and well-organized. Such an ambitious synthesis could have easily become either chaotic and dense or thin and overly simplistic, but Rompilla hits all the highlights and stays on point, even when covering Aristotle in a few lines: "He believed that the rainbow had only three fixed, or primary colors: red, green and blue (although yellow was visible), and he assigned these three primaries to pigment as well." Broad ranging despite its brevity, her introduction to the study and practice of color for interiors leaves the reader with the sense of the complexity and depth of the subject-and might inspire some to study further. Except for a few anomalies, such as an out-of-focus photograph of Josef Hoffmann's Palais Stoclet, the art is well-chosen, nicely reproduced and beautifully incorporated into the book's coffee-table format.

Very nice, but more of a textbook.
By L. K. Royet
This book has some lovely interiors and color combination ideas, but it's more of a textbook and has many pages devoted to color spectrum charts and the science of color. I read about it in a well-known home decorating magazine which described it as one of the best books for decorating with color, but I really found it a little too technical. If you are a design student, it would probably be more appropriate.

A good beginner's handbook
By Ronald Parent
This book is good for those who have limited background in color theory and want a concise history of color. Most of the book discusses color from cave to modern and contemporary periods culminating with applications to decorating. The color plates are good examples of the content being presented. Certainly a good handbook for a beginner.
