Aesop's animal fables spring marvelously to life in the tiny, jewel-like miniatures adorning the 15th-century illuminated Florentine manuscript splendidly reproduced here in 151 color illustrations. Rendered by a rare books curator at the New York Public Library, the translation of the hand-lettered Greek texts startles with its pithiness just when it threatens to sound too literal. The manuscript, now held by the New York Public Library, may have belonged to Piero de' Medici, the Renaissance Florentine autocrat who was banished and later drowned. Fahy, a scholar at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, identifies the probable illustrator as Gherardo di Giovanni, a contemporary of Leonardo da Vinci and Botticelli, who painted frescoes and panels.

This is a lovely reproduction of a book read by our ancestors. It is interesting for its sayings and wisdom , which are frequently referred to in our own century. The pictures are clearly shown, and representative of what the proverbs reflect. They are simply drawn with some coloured tints added. This does not take away from the enjoyment of the manuscript but is not useful if one is looking for sophisticated brush strokes or complex compositions.
Due to being written 500 years ago the actual words are different but the meaning is clear.

Sensational!

This is a sensational book which covers the idea of Shrek, both movies Shrek 1 & 2 as well as behind the scenes stuff such as animation techniques and so forth. You will learn all sorts of interesting trivia such as the sequel was originally going to be an election for the throne with candidates such as Pinocchio's policies being about honesty. This is a very high quality book with nice paper making up the 173 pages, the makers haven't skimped on the quality at all, with heaps of illustrations and actual still frames from the movies it would make a sensational gift for any Shrek fan. You do want to make sure you have seen both movies first because the book does go extremely detailed into the plots of both, it is an excellent book, there's not really anything negative that could be said about it. It is a great book which will provide hours of enjoyment.

Shrek: From the Swamp to the Screen
Well, as the ultimate Shrek fan, I thought this one was a great buy! It doesn't include all of the Shrek movies. The book talks a little about characters, design, and other animation aspects. And actually, a lot of the content (sketches and notes etc.) are shown on the DVD extras. Still, I like the book form better because you're more free to go at your own pace (but if you're reading this, you're probably already a book person so that's moot I guess.)
But over all, I was very pleased with the book as both a book on an animated film and about Shrek. Perfect for anyone who's a fan of animation,

Great Compendium of Angel Images and Commentary

'This is a beautiful book presenting angelic images in great art.

According to the back cover there are "375 images of angels, ranging from early Christian mosaics to the paintings of Marc Chagall".

There are often a number of images devoted to a single biblical passage. For example, for Isaiah 6:1-3 there are eight 2-page spreads dealing with eight works of art.

The first two pages on a passage include the verses referred to along with a short description of how the angels referred to in the passage are depicted in the work of art shown. Then each additional two page spread focuses on how the different works of art present angelic beings referred to in the passage.

This book is a great reference to biblical passages dealing with angels as well as giving a brief treatment of 375 works of art that present angels in a biblical context. Book passages and art refer to:

Music history of Arlo

This book provided just what it promised, a transcription from interviews, quotes, and listing of where, when, and what songs were played and recorded by whom. I rated it 4 stars on this basis.
While some of Arlo's personality resides within this telling of the sequences of music events, the author does not seem to have any personal connection to the Guthrie family and not to Arlo at all. This is NOT a biography and anyone hoping to read one would be disappointed.

Pollock was the major force behind the transfer of avant-garde art from France to the United States and the American idiom in which it was expressed. strong text, inconsistent reproduction quality

Before Varnedoe and Karmel's Pollock monograph, which accompanied the MOMA / Tate retrospective a few yeas ago, this was the best available text-and-plates book about Pollock. In terms of its text, this book is still relevant and insightful. Like Elizabeth Frank, Landau does a lot of truly eye-opening comparison work throughout her book. She'll reprint a work by Picasso, say, or a Native American artifact, or a Pollock sketch, and then analyze the influence it exerted on one of Pollock's key canvases.
And unlike the Varnedoe/Karmel book, this volume reprints these several kinds of works in close proximity, often on the same or a facing page, a useful feature. Landau's remarks about Pollock's sources, outcomes, growth and directions are always at least provocative and often really instructive, particularly in her coverage of the late black paintings. Indeed, Landau's analysis is regularly listed and praised in other authors' bibliographies.
The drawbacks of the book are its numerous poor reproductions, and plates after all make the primary reason for buying an artist monograph. Many of the plates are excellent and crisp--"Lucifer," "Pasiphae," "Autumn Rhythm," the colorful, playful works following Pollock's marriage. But too many of the plates and fold-outs are muddy, and Pollock's use of silver or aluminum paint is simply beyond this book's ability--as with the gaudy and over-exposed looking gatefold that opens the book. "Blue Poles" and "Stenographic Figure" are among the book's other poor reprints. Until I saw the Varnedoe/Karmel reprint of "One: Number 31, 1950," and then again in "person" at the MOMA, I just flatly didn't understand how Pollock had approached it. It looks "ok" in Landau, but with a lessened resolution that just slightly confuses the webbing throughout.
Still, I value the book and particularly its text. As for the reproduction quality, I did buy a second copy to cannibalize it; I've posted many laminated pages throughout my classroom. But I got that copy at remaindered prices. At full cost, this is a 3 1/2 or 4 star book. At bargain prices, the book rates 4 or 4 1/2 stars. Varnedoe/Karmel is just visually superior.

A gorgeous retrospective of a brilliant body of work

This intelligent and lavishly illustrated volume, which first appeared in a 1989 hardcover edition, covers Pollock's entire career, his early influences, and the progression of the themes, techniques, and accomplishments of his life as an artist. Ellen Landau's text is enlightening, but the best part of this book is, inevitably, the illustrations themselves, which are an unparalleled feast for the eyes. For those who want to experience and understand Pollock's art (rather than dwell on his personal problems) this is an excellent choice.

Finally, a book that you really would put on your coffee table, and have friends pick up and chat about! I learned so much from this book! Just how a little candle put anywhere can make a HUGE difference. It explains all kind of ways to accent your home....and have people talking about it for days! Whoever would have thought. To use candles the way this book has explained and shown, and it be so simple and stunning!! I applaude the author, as well as the photographer. A Caveat for buyers

This is my first Amazon book review, but I felt compelled to write it. This book is beautiful, gorgeous even. I am still glad to have purchased the book...BUT for anyone who wishes to replicate the ideas in the book in your home, I found the book lacking in information on the sources of products. So if you love the accessories and would like to purchase them, you have nowhere to turn to. A listing ala Martha Stewart resources would have made me give this book 5 stars. But I am frustrated that I can't find out where to get some of the items used in the book!

Beautiful, accurate and perceptive

The photography in this book is spectacular. Gillison spent years getting to know the Gimi people of PNG and it shows in the photography. Subjects are casual and acting normally; you won't find photos like this by any photographer briefly (read less than a couple years) visiting PNG. This book is a window into the lives and ceremonies of PNG people that few outsiders are fortunate enough to see and even fewer talented photogaphers capture. This is not the standard travelogue with snapshots,
The text is equally exceptional. Gillison obviously knows his subjects and writes crisply and to the point. The text matches the art for giving the reader an insight to the lives of Gimi people-- a group of people with fascinating traditions, ceremonies, and culture. Gillison has witnessed the staggering transition that the Gimi are going through as the 20th century world intrudes in their rainforest and garden paradise. It gives the reader a different perspective from which to examine our own culture and traditions.
The price is a bargain. 168 pages, almost every one with at least one well-reproduced color photo. This could be a "coffee-table" art book selling for 4-5 times the price. I collect books on New Guinea and live in the country. This is one of the best books for my shelf in many years.

Almost as good as it could be

This is a great read and is loaded with color photos. If you're from PNG or just have a deep interest, definitely add this to your collection. Why only 4 stars? Two reasons: First, the photos are a bit drab as compared to the excellent shot on the cover. To be fair, taking photos in a pitch-black smoke-filled traditional highlands house at night is going to be somewhat drab no matter how good the photographer or equipment. That's just capturing reality. I suppose I expected to see photos of a large range of outdoor ceremonies whereas this book concentrates on indoor, night events as performed by a single language group. The book is still a definite purchase, just understand it's very limited in scope.
My second reason is somewhat biased. The author uses nearly every opportunity to bash Christian missionaries, their influence on the Gimi culture and to more subtly declare his own superior open-minded acceptance of all. As the PNG-born child of Christian missionaries I'm admittedly biased, but having seen a multitude of thrill-seeking anthropologists, photographers, artists and peace corps types filter their way through PNG I feel qualified to point out a few things. Most of the missionaries - not all, but most - approach the work in PNG with a great deal of respect to the New Guineans and their culture. Most of the non-missionary persons, like the author, spent a few weeks or even six months in the country and then departed, proclaiming themselves 'experts' by virtue of having learned some basic Tok Pisin, eaten dirty food and slept with smoke and cockroaches. This book does the same. It's excellent for having captured what may truly have been the last full initiation ceremony of the Gimi and the author does well in describing his understanding of events. To attribute greater significance than 'very basic opinion' to any of his views on the Gimi culture or the influence of outsiders would be a mistake not because the author is any less intelligent than others but because no one can truly understand cultural significances or meanings of a completely foreign people, particularly not so when the exposure is a few brief snapshots at a time and filtered through multiple translations.
My rant is complete. :) Enjoy the book!
