Acts of crime and criminal minds have always fascinated the world's authors. During 1900-1925, world stages were full of plays in which transgression and lawbreaking were the common denominators. In Blood on the Stage: Milestone Plays of Crime, Mystery, and Detection, An Annotated Repertoire, 1900 - 1925, Amnon Kabatchnik examines the key representations of transgression drama produced in the 20th century's first quarter. This volume covers 80 plays written and produced between 1900-1925 that had at least one public performance in the English language, with an emphasis on New York and London performances.
Each of the entries revolves around murder, theft, chicanery, kidnapping, political intrigue, or espionage. Works by Nobel Prize winners Jacinto Benavente, John Galsworthy, and Eugene O'Neill are examined, along with plays by David Belasco, Earl Derr Biggers, George M. Cohan, Arthur Conan Doyle, Elmer Rice, and Mary Roberts Rinehart. The volume includes standards of the genre such as The Bat, The Cat and the Canary, The Last of Mrs. Cheney, Madame X, and The Scarlet Pimpernel. The emphasis is on manuscripts of enduring importance, pioneering contributions, singular innovations, outstanding success, and representative works by prolific playwrights in the genre. The entries are arranged in chronological order, each consisting of plot summary (often including significant dialogue), production and performance data, opinions by critics and scholars, and other features.

Review
A veteran stage director, theater professor, and mystery fiction reviewer fills a gap in criminous scholarship with a strong contender for Edgar Award recognition....Dialogue samples, quotations from contemporary reviews, anecdotes, and mentions of well-known cast members further enliven the entertainingly-written entries. (Jon L. Breen Mystery Scene Magazine, September 2008)
This material is astonishingly complete and up to date....The author correctly describes this work as "a labor of love." It is also a fascinating document that deserves a place in any library with a sizable collection on theater. (American Reference Books Annual, August 2008)
The author gives thorough criticism for the benefit of theater students on why each work is noteworthy, and why the appeal of this genre endures. (Book News, Inc.)
For anyone with a serious interest in the stage and plays of detection, this is a priceless reference. (Deadly Pleasures Mystery Magazine)
The sheer readability of his work exceeds that of many reference books.... Warmly recommended. (Reference and User Services Quarterly)
The plays selected by Kabatchnik...provide a wealth of material for lovers of theatre. (Los Angeles Times, August 2008)

Excellent resource and an entertaining read
By R. Elliott
This is an extremely useful book - so useful that I'm sorry that there's only one volume. As a former Artistic Director of a theater company, I would love to have had access to this volume when trolling for great plays deserving of revival. More than an encyclopedia, the book offers a thorough multi-page description of every conceivable crime and punishment play - whether penned as serious drama or for pure entertainment. The author writes in an informal, conversational style and though I'd intended to thumb through the book, I found myself reading it from cover to cover. It's very thorough - summarizes recent and past productions and their reviews, and gives information about the authors; in that way it resembles a textbook (fortunately, unlike the dry texts I suffered through as a theatre major, this one manages to be thorough as well as entertaining). But it (and its cousin, "Sherlock Holmes on the Stage") is also an excellent reference for theater professionals searching for great material. Or, for that matter, to anyone looking to learn a bit more about the history of theater.

Kabatchnik, Amnon, Blood on the Stage, 1975-2000, Milestone Plays of Crime, Mystery, and Detection: An Annotated Repertoire, 2012, Maryland, The Scarecrow Press Inc.,608 pages, ISBN 978-0-8108-8354-3, Drama, Hardcover, $125.00
"The first stage crime was committed in ancient Greece." With those auspicious words, Amnon Kabatchnik begins his excellent 37 page Introduction to the fourth volume of his monumental survey of plays of crime and mystery written in English largely for the American stage during the Twentieth Century; however, his Introduction is really a concise and readable history of crime stage drama on both sides of the Atlantic, and should serve students of the theatre well as an entertaining refresher of this particular genre
Born in Tel Aviv, Israel, Amon Kabatchnik received his BS degree in theatre and journalism from Boston University; he also holds an MFA degree in directing from Yale School of Drama. He served as Professor of Theatre at several universities including Stanford University and Ohio State University. He has also directed numerous dramas, comedies, thrillers and musicals. Blood on the Stage 1975-2000, continues the study which began with three previous volumes in this series covering the years 1900-1975. Mr. Kabatchnik is also the author of Sherlock Holmes on the Stage.
The author refers to his series as an `Annotated Repertoire', which it certainly is, providing extensive information about 82 plays. For example, the entry on M Butterfly (1988) by David Henry Hwang covers seven pages. Following its opening paragraph which gives the factual background to the narrative, there follows a detailed scene by scene description of the play. Then its stage history is given, followed by a three page biographical note on the author, David Hwang. The publisher of the acting edition is listed next, followed by the Awards and Honours received by the play; the entry is concluded with a list of its textual notes. This format is followed fairly closely for each of the 82 listed plays although in many of the summaries a section is added giving critics` assessments.
An additional feature of this excellent reference work is a series of five Appendices. Appendix A, titled Deadly Poison surveys in essay form the use of poison in stage drama since Euripides presented Medea in 431 BC; Appendix B, Twentieth -Century Courtroom Dramas lists plays since 1900 that unfold in a courtroom; Appendix C presentsTwentieth-Century Death-Row Plays; Appendix D deals with `Children in Peril'; and Appendix E lists by author `Notable One-Acts of Mayhem, Mischief, and Murder.
At $125.00, and one can only assume that the other volumes in the series are similarly priced, this excellent reference book is beyond most individual budgets; however, I must recommend that Public Libraries, School, College and University Libraries, invest in Mr. Kabatchnik's four volume opus. I would further suggest that professional and amateur theatre groups invest similarly.

Great to read for fun and reference
By bookbuzz
A good mystery is a thing of joy for me and especially joyful is the experience of being part of an audience when a tale of mayhem and not a little murder takes centre stage - sitting in the stalls watching actors unravel an intriguing who-dun-it is an adrenalin racing, spine tingling experience.
Amnon Kabatchnik, author of Blood On The Stage 1975 - 2000 has compiled a list of these heart hammerers and a marvellous list it is; each play selected (there are over 80) has a detailed plot synopsis, info on the productions and staging of the work, bio sketches of the playwright, director, actors, and reviews by major critics.
Don't want to rave but am going to; so lovely to read about forgotten faves and relive the performance: Patricia Highsmith's `The Talented Mr. Ripley'; a wonderful book, play and film (if there's a t-shirt, I need to know). Ripley's charm, impeccable good manners coupled with his chillingly creepy, dark-side were faithfully reproduced in Phyllis Nagy's stage adaptation. I'd forgotten how wonderful the sets were, some of the action takes place at sea - easy to depict if it's a movie but stage set design needs expertise to get an ocean liner mood right. The critics must have agreed with me because the reviews were unanimous; Phyllis Nagy and all concerned with the international productions were awarded top marks.
What is particularly engaging about Blood On The Stage is I've discovered books that were translated to the stage that I didn't know about. `To Kill A Mockingbird' is on my top ten booklist - I've seen the film and now I know there's a play, I'll be watching out for a production.
Amnon Kabatchnik's entertaining research and reporting style makes for a really interesting read. He has included reports on all mystery theatre genres staged between 1975 - 2000: psychological dramas, who-dun-its, classical detectives, comic mysteries and let's not forget: musicals which have a corpse in the cast list.
Some of the well-known playwrights included are: Anthony Shaffer, Jeffrey Archer, Terence Rattigan, David Mamet, Tom Stoppard, Ira Levin, Simon Brett, Stephen Sondheim, Lesley Bricusse and lots more. What is especially interesting is reading about some of their lesser known works - Lesley Bricusse gained an international reputation with his musical `Stop The World, I Want To Get Off' but did you know in 1988 his play `Sherlock Holmes - The Musical' was produced in Exeter, England?
He wrote the book, lyrics and score... serious fun, love to see it. Similarly there are other plays written by playwrights unknown to me that have whetted my appetite - currently googling for more info on possible future productions.
Blood on the Stage 1975 - 2000 is a keeper. Doesn't matter whether you are a student or fan of mystery theatre, if you enjoy exciting puzzling stories (each play's synopsis is a descriptive short story without dialogue) then at 603 pages, Amnon Kabatchnik's scholarly recording of milestone plays is a book that is easy to dip into and return to, both for reference and pleasure. If you can't get it for yourself, lobby your local library or college and share the enjoyment.
