Contemporary Southern Women Fiction Writers: An Annotated Bibliography (Magill Bibliographies), by Rosemary M. Canfield Reisman, Canfield

What many critics call the third wave of the Southern Renaissance has produced a number of impressive women writers, notably in the novel and short story genres. The contemporary Southern women writers selected for inclusion range from those who are well-established, for example, Gail Godwin, Shirley Ann Grau, Lee Smith, and Alice Walker, to those, such as Jill McCorkle and Sylvia Wilkinson, whose reputations are still being built. In twenty-eight chapters, each devoted to a specific writer, the authors of this book list, summarize, and evaluate relevant books and essays, as well as significant reviews and interviews, and, in some cases, useful newspaper stories. In a separate section, over ninety critical works of major importance in women's studies and in the study of Southern literature are similarly noted. Christopher J. Canfield's introduction explains the authors' rationale and includes additional bibliographical suggestions. Written in clear, non-technical language, this book is an important tool for students of contemporary literature.

The Story of Opera, by Richard Somerset-Ward

"Turning the pages of this book, you will read about many remarkable people, and many weird and wonderful happenings, but you will also discover, I think, why opera is, and always has been, such an exciting phenomenon. Its story is, in its own right, a wonderful and enthralling drama." -Kiri Te Kanawa

Whether you love Mozart or Puccini; Caruso, Callas, or Pavarotti; here's a book sure to delight both longtime opera lovers and those new to this most dramatic of all musical forms.

Published on the 400th anniversary of the first performance of the very first opera, this richly illustrated volume presents a wealth of performance photographs, stage designs, and paintings. It brings the history of opera to life through the individual stories of the hundreds of people who created it-composers, librettists, impresarios, conductors, directors, and, of course, singers.

The book is organized chronologically, with sections devoted to the great Italian, German, French, English, and Russian operas and artists. The final chapter surveys the many figures-directors such as Visconti, Zeffirelli, and Wieland Wagner; performers such as Domingo, Sills, Sutherland, and Norman; and artists, from David Hockney to Robert Wilson-who have brought opera to a broad new audience in the late 20th century.

Richard Somerset-Ward is former head of Music & Arts Programming for BBC Television, where he was responsible for many opera broadcasts and recordings. He is currently an independent writer and television producer in New York.

Amazon.com Review
Opera neophytes and experienced music theater fanatics alike should enjoy The Story of Opera, by Richard Somerset-Ward. This big, beautiful book is well written and lavishly illustrated with color and black-and-white photos and drawings that vividly evoke the visual elements of opera. Somerset-Ward's highly readable history of opera is incisive and remarkably complete. His detailed knowledge of the origins and evolution of the art form should answer the curiosity of some readers while whetting that of others--for the latter group, there's a suggested list for further reading at the back of the book.

The illustrations are varied; the design for the entrance of the first "Queen of the Night" is here, along with portraits of composers and a host of production photos, some of them more than a century old. There's a revealing photo of the Three Tenors and a selection of Caruso's self-caricatures. Somerset-Ward does not exclude an opera from consideration simply because it was an atrocity, so there are pictures here from both classic productions and not a few, well, flops. The book's chronological arrangement, from the debut of "Il Dramma per Musica" in the late 16th century to late-20th-century productions (including a chapter on popular musical theater), exposes readers to opera's development over its 400-year history.

Dame Kiri Te Kanawa's foreword to the book is an added treat for her fans. In it, she sums up the experience of The Story of Opera: "Turning the pages of this book, you will read about many remarkable people, and many weird and wonderful happenings, but you will also discover, I think, why opera is, and always has been, such an exciting phenomenon. Its story is, in its own right, a wonderful and enthralling drama."

From Publishers Weekly
In the late 16th century, a group of Florentine poets, intellectuals and musicians formed an academy dedicated to developing a new musical style in imitation of ancient Greek drama. Their creation, il dramma per musica (drama expressed through music), was soon transformed into a popular art form known as opera. In his admirable history of this "multimedia entertainment," Somerset-Ward, formerly BBC Television's head of music and arts programming, shows how opera quickly gained favor in the Renaissance courts of northern Italy as well as in Naples, France, England and central Europe. He then follows it through the Age of Enlightenment; the Romantic Movement; the 19th century in Italy and Paris; numerous nationalist trends; the verismo movement in Italy; the varieties of popular musical theater; and into the 20th century. He gives his story a lively focus by concentrating on the extraordinary personalities who have shaped opera during its 400-year historyAcomposers, librettists, singers, conductors, patrons, impresarios, set designers, stage directors, even audiences. With the rise of the stage director, Somerset-Ward contends, drama has become as important as music, thereby moving opera closer to genuine theater and making ours the "first truly great age of opera." Innovative staging, he notes, also breathes new life into old warhorses and is often what makes avant-garde opera palatable to audiences not attuned to atonality and dissonance. If Somerset-Ward's writing rarely transcends the workmanlike, this introduction is still accessible, informative and, with 237 illustrations, 118 in color, eye-catching. BOMC selection.

From Kirkus Reviews
Opera seems to generate more coffee-table tomes than any other subjectalways beautiful, usually interesting, and occasionally informative. This one manages to succeed on all three counts. Somerset-Ward, the former head of music and arts programming for BBC Television, has attempted to provide a comprehensive history of the art in time for its 400th birthday (the first opera performance, of Dafne, took place in Florence in February 1598), and if hes a bit late raising the curtain, no one has real cause to complain. For in addition to requisitely gorgeous illustrations and photos, Somerset-Ward has written an authoritative 300-page text tracing the history of opera from its origins in ancient Greek dramaturgy and Baroque court spectacles to its golden age in the 19th century and its many transformations over the past 30 years. In a book that will appeal to all opera fans, Somerset- Wards history will manage to attract the serious musicologist and historian. A fascinating and comprehensive book of Opera ever written
By A Customer
This is a fascinating and comprehensive book of opera ever written. A lot of beautiful pictures. The biding, printing quality is top notch. Like an art. By just looking at this book, you want to go to opera. Only if this book automatically plays the opera when I open each page... However, there is no limitation in your imagination :-) "Easy to understand" explanations - such as "What is bel canto ?". One disappointment is that it is not as complete or detailed. For example, Mozart's unfinished opera, Zaide, was not mentioned at all. But the aria, "Ruhe sanft mein holdes Leben" in the opera is quite famous (and really beautiful), and people like me who want to know about it will be disappointed. Well, this is nitpick. I would consider this book as the one that should be in every music (opera) lover's bookshelf.

many problems
By Babytoxie
Overall, an informative book on the race for the poles. Just be sure you know a bit about the subject before you read this.
This book is loaded with illustrations and photos, covering all periods of polar exploration. Unfortunately, maps aren't given the same treatment. Dozens upon dozens of voyages are covered in the text, but when it comes to showing the paths these explorers took, you are stuck with two maps, one for each pole, with lines, dashes, arrows, and dates all thrown together. Many of the explorers aren't even represented on the maps at all. It would be nice to have the maps broken up more, grouping the earliest voyages, the ones that almost crossed the Circles, etc.
Also, the format of the chapters could use some cleaning up and more chronological order. The text rapidly darts from one subject to another, and jumping forward and backward in the text was often required. Startling to me was the fact that a discussion of Antarctica's environment, geography, etc, is presented in the BACK of the book! Sure, this book is on the explorers, but it would be nice to let the reader know early on exactly what the explorers were up against and why they were limited in how far they could go.
My final problem with this book, and probably the largest, is its emphasis on Scott's Antarctic expedition, romanticizing it like so many other texts (and history in general) have done. Even though Amundsen was first, he always gets overshadowed by Scott's disaster. More emphasis should be put on Amundsen's expedition, which succeeded due to experience and planning, instead of relying on luck and "the human spirit".
The "Discoveries Series" appears to be designed for first-time readers, but I couldn't recommend this book to one.

A French Perspective
By JohnCarr
North Pole, South Pole is a title from the New Horizons series of Thames & Hudson. These in turn are translations from French originals. It is this that in part attracts me to the series (this is the fifty-seventh title in the series that I've read, ranging from Alchemy to the Amazon and from The Birth of the Universe to Bronze Age Europe). Being monolingual I'm restricted to Anglophone views on topics unless, as here, we get the views of a somewhat different perspective.
The books are pocket-sized with, say, 100+ pages of main text on high quality paper followed by 50+ pages of extracts from documents. They also typically contain a chronology, a glossary, a further reading list and an index. The works are not merely lavishly illustrated but have detailed credits for illustrations.
This work covers the history of Arctic and Antarctic exploration, the searches for the Northeast and Northwest passages, the races to the poles and the more recent scientific explorations.
I have one serious criticism of this volume. In a work such as this good maps are invaluable. Unfortunately the colours used in the main maps to illustrate the routes taken by explorers are often far too similar to others colours to distinguish who went where.

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-6–In this second book in the series, Sabrina and Daphne continue their family's fairy-tale detective work in the Hudson River town of Ferryport Landing. The village has more than its share of Everafters, a group of fairy-tale characters who escaped persecution in Europe by fleeing to America over 200 years ago. Here, the sisters start attending the local elementary school where the principal just happens to be the Pied Piper of Hamelin and Snow White is a most beloved teacher. Almost instantly, one of their teachers is found dead in his classroom, tied to the ceiling in a spider web. While investigating his murder, the girls uncover a devious plot and get closer to discovering the whereabouts of their missing parents. Free-spirited Daphne is a perfect foil for her older, grumpier sister, Sabrina, whose understandable anger over the loss of her parents is the main theme of this novel. There are as many references to frightening aspects of today's world as there are nods to folklore and sometimes both appear in the same sentence. While this mixing of sensibilities proves that fairy tales can be as dark as reality, it also occasionally trivializes truly upsetting modern problems such as nuclear weapons and child labor. The story is fast paced and the main characters are sympathetic and appealing. The abrupt ending will leave readers hungry for the next book in the series.–Kathleen Meulen, Blakely Elementary School, Bainbridge Island, WA

HILARIOUS! MYSTERIOUS! WONDERFUL!
By betty l. dravis
Before I finished reading the first book in this series, I just HAD to order the second one from Amazon, so there would be no break in the reading. THE BOOKS ARE THAT GOOD!

The perfect blend of humor, mystery, and adventure ... with some very unusual characters. Fantastic!!!

As I said in the Book One review, I bought the book for my grandkids and started reading it myself. Now, Ashley is reading Book One while I finish this newer one. Then when we both finish, Book One goes on to Johnny, and Book Two goes to Ashley.

Families that read together, stay together. The same goes for praying, of course.

School daze
By Amanda Richards
Continuing from book one, Sabrina and Daphne Grimm are very busy solving crimes in Ferryport Landing alongside their Grandmother, her friend Mr. Canis and the mischievous Puck. So busy in fact, that they have conveniently forgotten that they should be attending school, an oversight that is speedily rectified with the appearance of Ms. Smirt of the Department of Child Welfare.

As can be expected, Ferryport Landing Elementary School is not your average institution of learning. Daphne fits in easily, thanks to her beautiful and kind teacher Ms. Snow White, but Sabrina has a much tougher time. Her classmates are perpetually sleepy and tired, the headmaster is the Pied Piper, and her teacher Mr. Grumpner is even grumpier than his name indicates.

Before Sabrina can get settled in, Mr. Grumpner is found cocooned in a spider web, and monsters are wreaking havoc in the halls. While all this is going on, Sabrina continues to hunt for their parents, and thanks to a magical match, she gets closer than she's ever been to solving the mystery. Barring her way is a most unexpected adversary and her pet 'kitty", who answers to the name Jabberwocky.

The book ends abruptly, with a cliff hanging "to be continued" and an unwritten "GOTCHA!!"

See you at book three.

The Future Looks Grimm
By The Careful Collector
The Sisters Grimm: The Unusual Suspects is the continuing tale of Sabrina and Daphne Grimm. The sisters, who were in the foster care system for nearly a year and a half following the disappearance of their mother and father, now live with their grandmother in the town of Ferryport Landing. In Book #1, the girls learned what it means to be Grimm, to be the guardians of Ferryport Landing and the Everafters. Together with their Granny Relda, Mr. Canis, Puck and a two hundred pound dog named Elvis, the girls foiled the plans of Jack the Giant Killer to release the giants into Ferryport Landing that he might regain his fame by slaying them.
Now, some three weeks later, they will face a new and frightening challenge: starting at a new school. While Daphne becomes the star of the second grade (and Snow White's favorite student), Sabrina finds the sixth grade full of sleep walking children and a few very persistent bullies. When a teacher is found murdered on the sisters' first day of school, the Grimms once again find themselves on the case. At the same time Sabrina must confront her prejudice against the Everafters and her ever increasing anger.
Michael Buckley has surpassed himself. The Unusual Suspects exceeds The Fairytale Detectives in humor, excitement, danger and its confrontation of childhood, family, and social issues. All of the characters are blossoming, each newly exposed layer hinting at clues to the mystery. Ideas of who is good and who is bad in this phalanx of fairy tale characters are dashed, and the ending is unexpected, to say the least.

'Logical' Luther Lee and the Methodist War Against Slavery (Studies in Evangelicalism), by Paul Leslie Kaufman

Luther Lee, D.D. (1800-1889), one of the founders of Wesleyan Methodism, was a nineteenth-century reformer and an ordained minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church. Lee is known to most Methodist historians as a Methodist Episcopal minister who deserted the church that had brought him to spiritual birth and ordination. Wesleyan Methodist church historians know him as the first president of their denomination, an editor of their periodical, and unfortunately, a traitor who betrayed and then subsequently walked away from the church he had helped to establish. His significance to American history has not heretofore been observed.

This volume explores Lee's life, his politics, and his theology. One of the author's particular foci is the extent to which Lee affected the antislavery movement. Paul L. Kaufman places Lee within the broad context of nineteenth-century reformism as he battled the "gag rule" of the Methodist Episcopal bishops, and then shaped the Wesleyan Methodist Connection while he served on the highest levels of Garrison's American AntiSlavery Society. Of interest to students and teachers of Methodism, American history, and the abolitionist movement.

Medieval Music as Medieval Exegesis, by William T. Flynn

Flynn includes contextual and philosophic interpretation that encompasses biblical exegesis, medieval studies, Latin linguistics and ecclesiastical history. Flynn's comprehensive analysis shows that the interdisciplinary dimensions of the expanding field must be understood beyond their traditional boundaries.

Medieval Music as Medieval Exegesis reconstructs the creation of liturgies by examining the influences of grammatical studies, traditions, the period's music style, and the use of the scripture within the liturgy. Offering a new approach to the study of musicology, Flynn's analysis is based on the premise that liturgy is more than text, encompassing a three-dimensional study that goes beyond the liturgical forms, structures, primary elements, and words.

This study is especially note-worthy in that it appeals to not only musicologists and liturgists, but also biblical exegetes, historians, and literature students. The inclusion of sufficient introductory material enables the novices to handle the material with the same depth as the experts. An invaluable resource that develops the interdisciplinary dimensions of liturgical musicology, Medieval Music as Medieval Exegesis offers an in-depth and innovative look into the expansion of this evolving discipline and provides a foundation for more collaborative work.

Review
...excellent reading for scholars who have not considered all aspects of troping, and for graduate-level courses in medieval music, religion, and literature. (Worship)

..a study that will be of interest to persons in musicology and liturgics but also to students of medieval culture, linguistics, ecclesiastical history, and the history of biblical exegesis. (Church History: Studies in Christianity and Culture)

...Flynn's analysis treats far more than what might traditionally be defined as "music." Flynn's study provides a welcome move beyond the disciplinary boundaries that artificially isolate "music" in the liturgy, as he draws upon an impressive array of expertise, from theology to Latin syntax and pedagogy, in his effort to reconstitute the contexts of liturgical discourse. (The Journal Of Religion)

In recent years heightened concern for the meaning and social function of music has caused many musicologists to adopt interdisciplinary strategies that seek to locate musical developments within their cultural context, thereby often producing studies of interest to a broad range of scholars. The present work by William T. Flynn is just such a study, in which its author draws on a variety of disciplines in order to show how eleventh-century liturgy―broadly conceived as an indivisible union of text, music, action, and mystagogy―'became the principal locus for the proclamation and interpretation of scripture'...an illuminating example of the new genre of 'liturgical musicology'. (Ecclesiastical History)

Flynn's discussion of the texts and music is thorough and likely to be found useful across the disciplines of medieval studies. (Speculum)

...few authors embark on such a compelling journey as William T. Flynn does...he succeeds quite elegantly in mediating between types of evidence, technical vocabulary, and methodologies specific to several distinct specialties. Scholars of various medieval disciplines will find this work thought provoking. (The Medieval Review)

About the Author
William T. Flynn is a Lecturer in the Center for Medeval Studies at the University of Leeds. He has received awards and commissions from the American Guild of Organists, the Wieniawski competition, Washington National Cathedral, Montreat Conference on Music and Worship, and the Presbyterian Association of Musicians.

J'Accuse, by Aharon Shabtai

Explosive poems by an Israeli accusing his country of crimes against humanity.

Playing on Zola's famous letter denouncing the anti-Semitism of the French government throughout the Dreyfus affair, Aharon Shabtai's title can be taken literally: it charges his government and his people with crimes against the humanity of their neighbors. Here we find snipers shooting children, spin-masters trying to whitewash blood baths, ammunition "distributed like bars of chocolate," and "technicians of slaughter" for whom morality is merely "a pain in the ass."

With a splendid lyrical physicality that accentuates Shabtai's terse immediacy and matter-of-fact scorn, the poems cover a period of six yearsfrom the 1996 election of Netanyahu as prime minister through the curfews, lynchings, riots, sieges, and bombings of the second intifada. But at the heart of J'Accuse is the fate of the ethical Hebrew culture in which the poet was raised: Shabtai refuses to abandon his belief in the moral underpinnings of Israeli society or to be silent before the barbaric and brutal. He witnesses, he protests, he warns. Above all, he holds up a mirror to his nation.

From Publishers Weekly
In this provocative collection, Israeli poet Shabtai, author of more than 15 books of poetry, confronts what could be described as a collective identity crisis in Jewish culture, particularly in Israel. Having suffered immense persecution throughout history and learned to identify keenly with the dispossessed, Israeli Jews are now in a position of dominance over another people. Shabtai condemns Israel's role as occupier and military power, distancing himself from his country ("I'm a disciple of Shakespeare, not Ben Gurion") and identifying explicitly with the Palestinians ("I'm a Palestinian Jew"). While there are occasional glimmerings of personal struggle here-"O my country, my country,/ with each sandal,/ with each thread / of my khaki pants, / I've loved you"-for the most part, the book is a relentless polemic, elegizing innocent Palestinians and demonizing Israeli soldiers: "Idiotic soldiers of lead, / was your father a knife/ that only knows how to chop?" Plumbing modes familiar from Turkish poet Nazim Hikmet's subtle eroticism, Shabtai veers into sexual and violent shock value: "In the morning she sucks off a sniper in uniform,/ and at evening he returns/ and proudly displays/ the X he etched / into the butt of his rifle,/ after he'd terminated/ a young woman, age 19,/ who was hanging up laundry/ on her roof in Hebron." Titled after Emile Zola's impassioned defense of Alfred Dreyfus, these poems seem particularly designed to provoke a Jewish audience, using images of oppression drawn from Jewish liturgy and history. The book compares Israeli soldiers to Pharaoh's troops in ancient Egypt, refers to "pogroms" against Palestinians living in "ghettos" and explicitly likens present-day Palestinians to Jews living in 1930s Germany. What role this book will play in ongoing debates about Israel, the West Bank and Gaza remains to be seen, but it could prove even more controversial than Mahmoud Darwish's recent (and much more nuanced) Unfortunately, It Was Paradise.

Review
Shabtai is one of the most exciting poets writing anywhere

"Peter Cole's translations superbly capture the stark rhythms and cadences of the original. Accurate and representative, they bring to life a substantial segment of the work of this enormously high-charged and talented poet."

a gorgeous little book
By A Customer
By turns venomous and lyrical, brutally contemporary, melancholically nostalgic, and timelessly erotic, this slim collection has an enormous range of emotion and poetic technique. Most of Shabtai's poems collected here are quite short, often only a page in length; the translation is seemingly prosy and plain, but this is the right choice, as it only renders the poetry more direct in its impact. The politics of these poems are complex and resist the oversimplification of controversy-mongers; Shabtai is at once bitterly nostalgic for the utopian dream of early, socialist Zionism, and angrily opposed to the current state of things. Contemporary poetry readers would do well to give this book a serious look; also, American spectators to the Middle East will find Shabtai presents a very different picture of the politics of Israeli Jews than we are commonly presented with by domestic media.

Deftly translated from Hebrew into English
By Midwest Book Review
Deftly translated from Hebrew into English by Peter Cole, J'Accuse is a collection of verse written by Aharon Shabtai, an Israeli poet who sharply denounces Israel's current policy toward the Palestinians. Resolutely criticizing the occupations of the West Bank and Gaza, this emphatic collection contains a dramatic signature of determination that what is wrong should be put right for the sake of both the Palestinians and the Israelis. To A Pilot: When next you circle/in your chopper/over Jenin,/pilot, remember the children/and old women/in the homes at which you fire./Spread a layer/of chocolate across your missile,/and do your best to be precise --/so their souvenir will be sweet/when the walls start to fall.

J'Accuse - What is the future?
By David
Aharon Shabtai has put in poetic verse what so many novelists and journalists are afraid to do and that is to decry the reality of occupation and oppression and to give us in honest detail what is happening in Israel and the West Bank. His words construct in vivid detail how the original socialist contract has been destroyed and turned into a vicious vendetta against the Palestinians and their supporters that has lead to a broken society with no future. Bravo Mr. Shabtai!

Encyclopedia of French Film Directors, by Philippe Rege

Cinema has been long associated with France, dating back to 1895, when Louis and Auguste Lumière screened their works, the first public viewing of films anywhere. Early silent pioneers Georges Méliès, Alice Guy Blaché and others followed in the footsteps of the Lumière brothers and the tradition of important filmmaking continued throughout the 20th century and beyond. In Encyclopedia of French Film Directors, Philippe Rège identifies every French director who has made at least one feature film since 1895. From undisputed masters to obscure one-timers, nearly 3,000 directors are cited here, including at least 200 filmmakers not mentioned in similar books published in France.

Each director's entry contains a brief biographical summary, including dates and places of birth and death; information on the individual's education and professional training; and other pertinent details, such as real names (when the filmmaker uses a pseudonym). The entries also provide complete filmographies, including credits for feature films, shorts, documentaries, and television work. Some of the most important names in the history of film can be found in this encyclopedia, from masters of the Golden Age—Jean Renoir and René Clair—to French New Wave artists such as François Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard.

From Booklist
Author Rège's aim was “to identify every French director who had made at least one feature film during the first century of cinema (1895–2005),” and the result is a bull's-eye: a comprehensive catalogue of nearly 3,000 directors born in France as well as many others whose work was based there or who spent a significant amount of time living there. All manner of filmmakers are represented, including early film pioneers such as Louis Lumière and George Méliès, avant-garde auteurs, documentarians, and contemporary directors. Rège's wide lens takes in a panorama of film history starring Claude Chabrol, Jean-Luc Godard, Louis Malle, Roman Polanski, Jean Renoir, Alain Resnais, Eric Rohmer, François Truffaut, Agnès Varda, and many, many more. Entries are arranged alphabetically and have brief biographies and complete filmographies that include television works and short films. There are no pictures of the subjects who worked behind rather than in front of the camera. Alternate titles are provided when the films listed are coproductions of two or more countries, and in the case of films released in the U.S. or the UK, the American and/or English titles are included. These are the kinds of details that make film research easier, as do the name and title indexes, which make up half of the second volume. Wide-ranging in scope and exhaustive in detail, this would be a solid addition to any film or performing-arts collection. --Carolyn Mulac

Review
The breadth and depth of this work is apparent after comparing Rege with the Internet Movie Database (IMDB), arguably the most comprehensive English-language filmography on the Web. For example, Rege's entry on "Jean Bacque" lists 58 films (mostly shorts), whereas IMDB lists 7 (as of February 2010). (American Reference Books Annual, May 2010)

Wide-ranging in scope and exhaustive in detail, this would be a solid addition to any film or performing-arts collection.

(Booklist, June 2010)

Rege—a freelance writer and film historian as well as the author or coauthor of five other books, e.g., biographies of Klaus Kinski and Johnny Depp—has written a comprehensive encyclopedia of French film directors, featuring major film directors from the silent era to 2008 and approximately 200 directors not previously included in other books on French film. Some of the entries include Jean Renoir, Rene Clair, François Truffaut, and Jean-Luc Godard. Each entry has brief biographical information about the director with date of birth and death, education and professional training, and a filmography. Any film or television production completed before December 31, 2008, is listed in the filmography. The author admits he did not include directors of porn movies because it was not possible for him to develop an accurate filmography of their works. The majority of the directors here are French born, but there are also those who are foreign born but created significant parts of their work in France. The second volume ends with a bibliography and name and title indexes. BOTTOM LINE: This two-volume encyclopedia would be a nice addition to an academic library, especially any school with a film studies program. (Library Journal, April 2010)
