A Fascinating Peek at Original Old Designs
By uncletwinkie
I really like this book. It is a survey of original samples, sketches and designs of everything from furniture to fabric, from the companies that produced these items. The chapters are 1) The 18th century: Classicism and Rococo 2)Regency and After: Revival and Eclecticism 3) Early Victorian: The Workshop of the World 4) High Victorian: After the Great Exhibition 5) The Late 19th Century: Into Arts and Crafts 6) The 20th Century: Traditionalism and Modernism. The book is filled with high quality illustrations, most in full color; each section of illustrations is preceded by several pages of numbered descriptions. Although I think a few illustrations were poorly chosen, I find the book a joy to behold. And, the "over size" of the book is perfect for the content, too much would be lost in a smaller format.

From School Library Journal
Starred Review. Grade 6 Up—The past is brought to life through this exceptional work, replete with fascinating stories, fluid and expressive writing, wrenching personal accounts, and stirring visuals from the Library of Congress collection. The highly readable text documents the journey of a country built on the precept of freedom yet divided by the immorality of slavery. Diaries and interviews turn the facts of slavery into a living, breathing account of painful family separations, the lash of the whip, and the desperation to escape at any cost. The letters and personal essays of children, escaped slaves, abolitionists, and black soldiers, as well as others, lend authenticity to the brave words spoken and deeds accomplished so long ago. News accounts of slave auctions and antislavery almanacs signify the reality of the times. The Black Codes, the Fugitive Slave Law, as well as other legislation, court cases, and amendments are clearly explained, not just for their legal importance but also within the context of the effects they had on those who were enslaved. The inspired text is enhanced by the accompanying high-quality photographs, prints, and drawings. A must-have for all collections.—Margaret Auguste, Franklin Middle School, Somerset, NJ

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Published in association with the Library of Congress, where Osborne is a senior writer and editor, this fascinating, well-designed volume offers an essential introduction to the experiences of African Americans between 1800 and 1877. Osborne further narrows her topic by focusing on the lives of young people, beginning with the story of teenage sisters who escaped slavery in Washington, D.C., endured recapture, and, after winning their freedom, went on to become active abolitionists. Throughout, Osborne moves from similar, personal stories to broader historical milestones, and in highly accessible language, she provides basic background even as she challenges readers with philosophical questions: “Why did the Constitution, the basic rules that govern the United States, allow slavery in the first place?” This fluid exchange between political events and intimate, human stories creates a highly absorbing whole that is made even stronger by the many young peoples’ first-person recollections of the time period, culled from primary source materials. These voices create a sense of immediacy that’s echoed in the exceptional selection of well-reproduced visuals, including photographs, magazine illustrations, and etchings. A concise time line, source notes, and a bibliography close the chapters. This unique, powerful, and clear overview contains valuable insights for readers of all ages and backgrounds. Grades 6-9. --Gillian Engberg

An excellent pictorial review of America's greatest period of change
By Midwest Book Review
Illustrations, original documents and first-person narratives blend in a fine survey of Afro-American heritage in TRAVELING THE FREEDOM ROAD: FROM SLAVERY & THE CIVIL WAR THROUGH RECONSTRUCTION. An excellent 'you are there' news-style blend of picture and text emphasizes the many challenges and transition points of the time in this excellent pictorial review of America's greatest period of change.

A good supplement to history
By Dienne
I found this at the library and even though my kids are a bit young for it yet, I decided to check it out. I'm glad I did - I will be adding it to our collection when they are older.

Linda Barrett Osborne is a senior writer with the Library of Congress, so she had handy access to hundreds of primary sources, including photos, drawings, diaries, letters and interviews of former slaves through the Federal Writers Project. The images and personal accounts really bring the book alive and make history much more real than the dry list of names, dates and events found in history textbooks.

The book covers quite a bit of territory in only about 100 pages. It covers most of the 19th century, starting with the African slave trade (which was outlawed in 1808) and going through Reconstruction (which ended in the mid 1870s). Along the way the book covers slave auctions, living and working conditions of slaves, runaway slaves and the Fugitive Slave Act, resistance and slave revolts, opposition to slavery among whites, the Civil War, the Emancipation Proclamation, life as newly freedmen, Reconstruction, and attempts by Southern whites to return blacks to as near a state of slavery as they could given the reality of slavery being outlawed. Each topic is necessarily covered rather generally and superficially. This is certainly not a stand-alone history book. But that is not Osborne's purpose. Her purpose is to flesh out the history of the period with human perspective to show the black slaves and freedmen as individual living people with their own unique experiences in their own words.

The book is beautifully produced. The pages are thick and glossy and made to look rather like old parchment. Each page is richly illustrated with one or more pictures and/or drawings. Special text sections highlight segments of letters, diaries and interviews of slaves and freedmen. The picture captions are in rather tiny font and difficult to read, but that's my only complaint. This book could handsomely grace anyone's coffee table.

While I don't exactly relish the idea of sharing the brutal history of blacks in America with my biracial daughters (I wish such history had never happened), I am glad that there are now so many more resources for bringing that history to life and making it real, rather than the white-washed "War betweeen the States" which was fought over "States Rights" nonsense which is found in the history textbooks I grew up with. I definitely recommend this book.

From Publishers Weekly
A treasure for connoisseurs and scholars, this volume showcases the ravishing chalk studies of male and female nude models made after 1800 by famous French painter Pierre-Paul Prud'hon. Often called "the French Correggio" for his freewheeling mythological and allegorical canvases, Prud'hon (1758-1823) was an unorthodox public artist of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Empire. The Romantic generation championed his melancholy, mysterious eroticism, which is on full display in these feminized male bodies and idealized female torsos. Chief curator at large for Manhattan's Museum of Modern Art, Elderfield looks at Prud'hon's unhappy life?he separated from his violent, drunken wife after 25 years, gaining custody of his five children when she was committed to an insane asylum?and masterfully analyzes startling works that blur normally separated categories (masculine/feminine, platonic/passionate, cool/ecstatic) in a transgressive fantasy of desire. Gordon is an independent art historian.

A superior draughtsman
By Atlantic
I've owned at least one copy of this book for many years (1997). It's by far one of my most cherished art books and unmatched by any other book of drawings I've seen. If you appreciate fine drawings and value truly superior draughtsmanship you'll want to add this to your collection.

In my opinion, you owe it you yourself to purchase (yes, it's extremely expensive today, but keep watching) or find a copy in the library. Prud'hon was a late-18th century French academic that sadly wasn't fully appreciated in his day. He did enjoy success in his later career but some of his contemporaries, including David and Gericault, enjoyed more visible success in the same period.

The highlights of this book are the 57 color plates of Prud'hon's academic figure drawings, or "acadamies" as they are known. These drawings are exemplary models today, and unlike the scribbled messes many 20th century "artists" produce (and deemed acceptable by today's art schools), these drawings are dignified and stunningly beautiful.

Unfortunately, Prud'hon's drawing techniques have been lost and there is no definitive work describing how they were produced. Many of these drawings have unfinished sections and you can see not only the basic structure, but the construction process as well. We also can guess at what he did with the materials that were available at the time, but it would be nice to see the process documented.

Finally I believe this book should be reprinted, but until that time (if ever), try to at least see a copy if you can. For more information on Prud'hon I would also highly recommend the book Pierre-Paul Prud'hon by Sylvain Laveissiere; it's another beautiful - and still available - book illustrating Prud'hon's works, including paintings and drawings.

Nice pics but analysis can be weak & incorrect
By Russ Bogdan
The heros of this book are the large images. While I'm thankful to the author for presenting these rare reproductions, his occasional ambiguous, pontificating attempt to analyze them is typical of non practitioners trying to delve into the complex world of production (particularly lost practices of Masterworks). This common flaw in writers who pretend to be `in the know' has created much confusion about process. Eddenfield does note important studio practices rarely acknowledged today ie. - utilizing engravings and plaster casts that aided Prudhon. He notes standard, helpful bits of historic info regarding specific works but his ramblings can sometimes distract us from a more solid, critical analysis. (His bio revealing his modern bent, deems him a poor candidate in my opinion to be writing about one of the most sophisticated classical draftsmen of the 18th-early 19th C.)
There's a nice poetic quality here in describing P's work and while some drawing may seem erotic, much is wasted on speculations about seemingly effeminate male poses which has little to do with our understanding the artform. Soft, angelic interpretations, particularly in faces, were easily inherited from stylizations of the Italian "manner", especially from artists as delicate as Correggio, who's work influenced P- while he copied in Italy extensively. Space would have been better spent on ie. close-ups, so rare and prized by painters like myself. Here less would have been more.
Of more important technical interest to the artist: there are several erroneous statements made ie. pg. 89 "...P sees only the surface, he does not attempt to relate outward appearance to internal structure." Quite a naïve, superficial assumption (not surprising from our photo-sited society - in its inability to see beyond the surface). This indicates a visual dysfunction existing today and sadly such statements perpetuate this handicap. After writing this I even came across a more accurate 19thC description of his process supposedly from the writer/critic, Goncourt (republished I think in Laveissiere's 'P.P.P.') who offers the statement, "...he always proceeds from the inside to the outside of the figure."
In fact the idea actually contradicts now virtually lost concepts inherent in traditional work ie. complex issues relating to internal structure in turn affecting external, anatomical shapes which P- would have absorbed by copying artworks, including much antique sculpture in Italy (for a mere 7 years - my heart goes out to him for all that great pasta and wine he had to endure). Its impossible to abbreviate/illustrate these visual issues here in the lesser realm of text but its an important discrepancy to note.
While its always best to see the originals, by inspecting the repros here more closely with a magnifying lens one may not only get a sense of the exquisite contour lines following forms but within them see P's intricate building of tone, overlapping his strokes - separating and tying together subtle turnings of shapes with careful attention to preserving transparency which is aided by allowing the mid tone of the paper to show through. A most difficult task usually absent in drawings today that are focused on amateurishly copying `shadow shapes' which tend to black out particularly shadow areas altogether, hence flattening the work and destroying depth - this runs analogous to modern opaque painting methods.
I think its worth having this book for the pictures - unfortunately its expensive now but perhaps there will be reprints.
These drawings offer perhaps the perfect blend of nature and art. While he seems to display a nicer fluidity, than say the more austere David, for me the quality of his action poses lack a stronger sense of the dynamic power inherent in Italian `disegno' (perhaps evident in part by his apparent lack of follow through in laying out forms) nevertheless the sophistication of his relaxed `academies' excel by his talent. Its difficult to analyze the underdrawing since from what I could tell by analyzing originals, he often layed out his figures in charcoal first (even wiping some of this out)before continuing with chalk. That most of his strokes seem to fall vertically is generic misconception since, upon closer inspection not visible in books, one can see sublte anglings/turnings in the direction of forms. He utilized a very sophisticated blend of crosshatching with stumping to create his illusions. And I'm told by one curator that he experimented with materials that have (chemically) altered (usually darkenenking) which invite false speculation about ie. contrast.
While even the best reproductions fall short of clarifying the subtle, all important mid tones, this publisher still does about as good a job as any in reproducing fragile white chalk marks on toned paper. And the repro sizes here are decent.
These drawings seem to overshadow the weakness of many of his paintings which can have an overly polished look to them, as well as lacking the expressive character of many of the drawings, as the author has noted. It is probably due in part to this unusual inconsistency, not to mention small output, that his paintings are not better known to us. Although the exceptional refinement of his drawings, virtually unrivaled after his passing, certainly make the case for good drawings ideally being equal to paintings in terms of aesthetics and skill as well and overall value. From the modern period (late 19thC.) on, common acceptance of amateur sketches and hackneyed illustrations have since eroded our understanding and appreciation of fine drawings, which explains the gross lack of their production and demand in the gallery world today. (Ambiguously shaded, often air-brush like techniques are now commonly used by amateurs to simulate the Prud'hon look).
That intricately done paintings were often expected to accompany and therefore reflect ie. fine porcelain objects in display cases of aristocratic collectors, helps to explain this polished appearance as well. Yet this probable case of fashion dictating technique still makes it hard to justify such attention that seems to border on infatuation but I myself must become more familiar with his work before commenting further.

A college Fine Arts Major's dream come true!!
By A Customer
This book covers the structural anatomy with pin-point accuracy. Though this isn't really an anatomy book by title, by examining Prud'hon's structural techniques, one can easily see all of college's artistic anatomy classes in one of his graphics.

Gregor Mendel: The Friar Who Grew Peas, by Cheryl Bardoe

The only picture book available about the father of genetics and his pea plants!

How do mothers and fathers—whether they are apple trees, sheep, or humans—pass down traits to their children? This question fascinated Gregor Mendel throughout his life. Regarded as the world’s first geneticist, Mendel overcame poverty and obscurity to discover one of the fundamental aspects of genetic science: animals, plants, and people all inherit and pass down traits through the same process, following the same rules.

Living the slow-paced, contemplative life of a friar, Gregor Mendel was able to conceive and put into practice his great experiment: growing multiple generations of peas. From observing yellow peas, green peas, smooth peas, and wrinkled peas, Mendel crafted his theory of heredity—years before scientists had any notion of genes.

Children will be inspired by Gregor’s neverending search for knowledge, and his famous experiments are easy to understand as an introduction to genetics.

From School Library Journal
Grade 3-6–An attractive picture-book biography, this slim, oversize volume is as much a treat for the eye as it is for the curious mind. Smiths crisp, realistic paintings, often flooded with the bright green of pea plants, accompany Bardoes readable text describing a scientist whose physical and educational needs led him to the religious life, but whose curiosity about inherited traits caused him to become the father of genetics. Bright diagrams clearly depict Mendels famous plants, the internal arrangement of their seeds, and the results of carefully controlled experiments in cross-breeding with certain traits firmly in mind. An extensive authors note presents further information. This eye-catching picture-book biography falls nicely into a field that already includes the complexities of Peter Síss fascinating The Tree of Life (Farrar, 2003), Michael Doolings handsome Young Thomas Edison (Holiday House, 2005), James Cross Giblins eloquent Thomas Jefferson (Scholastic, l994), and Diane Stanleys attractive Leonardo da Vinci (Morrow, 1996).–Patricia Manning, formerly at Eastchester Public Library, NY

From Booklist
Gr. 2-4. Smith's watercolors give this biography of the first geneticist an appropriately bucolic feel, especially those that picture the dedicated, bespectacled Mendel in his gardens laboring over willowy pea plants. Other pictures follow Mendel from his studious, enterprising youth to his decision to become a friar, a profession that helped him "feed his body, mind, and soul" and enabled him, between teaching, preaching, and ministering to the sick, to pursue his desire to make a great discovery. That he was unable to convince nineteenth-century scientists that he did, indeed, discover a "universal law that would apply to all living things" brought an end to his scientific endeavors, though as Bardoe indicates, his discoveries, resurrected years after his death, have profoundly influenced our world. Easy-to-understand graphs show the results of Mendel's experiments, which, along with his theories, are clearly explained. Published in association with the Field Museum in Chicago, this visually pleasing book works as a fine source of introductory information on both the man and the science he pioneered. There is a great demand from the public for a handy reference work on modern music, as evidenced by Claghorn's Biographical Dictionary of American Music (1973) which went into five printings. Since hundreds of new bands and performers have appeared in the past 20 years, this update was necessary. Foreign groups are also included selectively.

From Booklist
This title is intended as an update to Claghorn's Biographical Dictionary of American Music (1973). It provides brief identification for more than 2,500 performers and songwriters, from ABBA and Claudio Abbado to Trisha Yearwood and Vincent Youmans. It covers a broad spectrum of time and musical genres.

There are no constants as to what is included in an individual or group entry. For example, not even birth dates of well-known performers are consistently given (and when they are, they are not always correct). The size of an entry is not always dependent on the subject's importance in music. Tiny Tim gets as many lines as Louis Armstrong, so that Tim's stance on AIDS can be included. Many entries are not up-to-date. James Taylor here is married to Carly Simon, although they divorced more than 10 years ago. There are numerous factual errors. Hank Williams, Sr., died in his limo near Oak Hill, West Virginia, not in his golf cart. Three Dog Night is not an Australian band. There is no mention of Ronnie Gilbert singing with the Weavers, and yet two Pete Seeger replacements are named. Robert Plant's solo entry doesn't mention Led Zepplin or have a see reference to it.

These are just a few of the problems with this dictionary. There are many excellent reference books on rock performers and sources on Broadway and classical music. This one is not recommended.

Review
...the purpose here is to provide basic information to serve as a starting point for any more comprehensive search; or as a quick reference to music facts. (The Midwest Book Review)

In clear-sized print this is an easy reference book for data on your favourite artistes in the U.S.A. and as such will find a place on the enthusiasts shelves...Easy to read and easy to refer to and a worthwhile acquisition... (Big International Bands)

All genres of popular music are covered, from rap to Broadway musicals, country to jazz...the sheer scope of the work is to be commended. (Choice)

Woody Allen, by Richard A. Blake

After setting out a few general guidelines for discussing theological issues in manifestly secular art forms, this study examines several Woody Allen films in turn, from the earlier comedies like Bananas and Sleeper to the later, more complex works like Hannah and Her Sisters and Crimes and Misdemeanors. Throughout his career, a clear line of development can be traced in his treatment of women and romance, of life and death, and of his awareness of a moral structure in the universe. Despite Allen's profane treatment of these topics and several others, his work from year to year shows a gradual transformation in his dealing with the sacred dimensions of his characters and their world. He wrestles with his Jewish cultural and religious heritage, but he can never escape it.

From Library Journal
The notion of Woody Allen as a religious and moral philosopher may not strike many as an idea whose time has come. But reading this work on the religious dimension of Allen's films could change your mind. By examining in chronological order the films Allen had the most control over?those he both wrote and directed?the author has discovered several remarkably consistent religious preoccupations: If there is a God ruling the universe, why is life so unfair? Why does God allow human suffering and evil to exist? And if there is no God, what gives meaning to life and provides a moral structure for human actions? Since these questions are unanswerable, how are people to live? Attempts to deal with these moral issues in a secular world appear in all of Allen's films. Blake offers a fresh, fascinating angle on the works of a master filmmaker. Highly recommended.?Marianne Cawley, Enoch Pratt Free Lib., Baltimore

Because of their tremendous mass audience, Hollywood feature films help mold, shape, and direct popular beliefs and attitudes. They also serve as frozen pieces of time that preserve the concerns of the past. CELLULIOD IVY examines the portrayal of higher education in movies from 1960-1990, offering a fascinating view not only of how Americans gained their views of higher education and college life during this crucial period, but also of the fascinating tension between movie fantasy and the realities of life.

From The Graduate to Revenge of the Nerds, from The Paper Chase to Educating Rita, the book delves into how movies treat the classroom, the extra-curricular, rites of passage, professors, romance, sports, alcohol and drugs, and sometimes, education itself. It offers some startling conclusions on how movies often reflect America's latent anti-intellectualism and how students can enter college with media-fed expectations for an experience different from what they encounter.

Amazon.com Review
In a literal overview of the world, Earth from Above: 365 Days presents a resplendent view of our complex home. Each new day reveals another breathtaking, and sometimes heartbreaking, image from the sky: an endless field of Kenyan flamingos, the crowded streets of Tokyo, the crisscrossing highways of Los Angeles, or a misty blue lagoon in Iceland. Turn the page and find yet another absorbing view. Each of the 365 pictures is monumental and imparts one more mind-blowing facet to our elaborate planet. Every image is accompanied by a brief socially conscious text. Descriptions of nature's bounty and wrath, along with human impact both good and bad, run throughout. From the beauty of the world's largest maze to the destruction of major earthquakes, life seems unpredictable. Whether it's one lone outfielder in Yankee Stadium or the lone penguin on a glacier in Antarctica, the sentiment is very much the same. Against the immensity of life on earth, each of us can sometimes feel so very small. --J.P. Cohen

Ema the Captive, by César Aira

Ema The Captive, César Aira’s second novel, is perhaps closest in style to his popular An Episode in the Life of a Landscape Painter and The Hare

In nineteenth-century Argentina, Ema, a delicate woman of indeterminate origins, is captured by soldiers and taken, along with with her newborn babe, to live as a concubine in a crude fort on the very edges of civilization. The trip is appalling (deprivations and rapes prevail along the way), yet the real story commences once Ema arrives at the fort, where she takes on a succession of lovers among the soldiers and Indians, leading to a brave and grand entrepreneurial experiment. As is usual with Aira’s work, the wonder of the book is in the details of customs, beauty, and language, and the curious, perplexing reality of human nature.

Review
“Aira’s works are dense, unpredictable confections delivered in a plain, stealthily lyrical style capable of accommodating his fondness for mixing metaphysics, realism, pulp fiction, and Dadaist incongruities.” (Michael Greenberg - The New York Review of Books)

“His novels are eccentric clones of reality, where the lights are brighter, the picture is sharper and everything happens at the speed of thought…. You don’t know where you are or what you are looking at, but the air is full of electricity.” (The Millions)

“Aira’s literature is but a parody of inventiveness, and at its core is an amazing degree of penetrating and unrelenting critical reflexivity.” (Nicolás Guagnini - Artforum)

Al Hirschfeld's line drawings are synonymous with the American theatre, but his work for Hollywood films is also gaining attention. His ability was to channel personality and character into simple line but, in addition to his monochromatic line drawings, this book includes his movie posters which, with their brilliant colour palettte, offer an interesting contrast to his more familiar work. Hirschfeld's career started at Goldwyn pictures in the 1920s and remained with MGM for 30 years. His Hollywood career unfolds in this book in striking reproductions of his work for now-classic films, from "The Alamo", "The Wizard of Oz" and "Singin' in the Rain" to "The Manchurian Candidate" and "Saving Private Ryan". It also includes his drawings of stars from Laurel and Hardy to Fred Astaire to Julia Roberts and renderings of his own unique behind-the-scenes perspective for films such as "Irma la Douce".

From Library Journal
The delightfully clever illustrations in these companion books span 80 years of productivity by the still-active 98-year-old artist Hirschfeld. The dual publications coincide with dual exhibitions: one at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Hollywood and one at the Museum of the City of New York. Most people identify Hirschfeld with his lively black-and-white line caricatures of famous people and events in the entertainment industry, as reproduced in magazines and newspapers like the New York Times. Both books include examples of these caricatures but also discuss and display Hirschfeld's many other contributions to 20th-century American popular culture, and both also include photographs and self-portraits of the artist himself. A New York City resident for most of his life, Hirschfeld also became associated with Hollywood after 1920, when he started doing publicity art for movie studios then based in New York, such as Selznick, Warner, and MGM. In Hirschfeld's Hollywood, Hirschfeld's own archivist, David Leopold, showcases over 100 examples of his colorful poster and advertising work for movies through the decades. For Hirschfeld's New York, exhibit curator Bell also has selected over 100 examples, portraying the Broadway theater and other aspects of New York's night life and daily life. Both books contain works that are not well known as well as old favorites. As represented here, the sheer chronological span of one perceptive artist's interpretive work should appeal to a wide audience. While either book is highly recommended on its own, a joint purchase of these complementary books is suggested for both academic and public libraries. Anne Marie Lane, Univ. of Wyoming, Laramie

All Hirschfeld
By Luis G. P. Davidson
Everything about Hirschfeld was already said. He's a genius. He's the Line King. He's almost 100 years old. And he's alive. Get this damn book. Buy the old ones. Collect them. Buy the video. Cut his drawings from the Sunday NYTimes. Stop buying stupid eletronic gadgets, save the money, and then spend 2 thousand in an original lithograph. I did it. Twice. And there's nothing in the world that can make me feel better. Maybe another one.

My son loves to draw. He was facinated by this book and enjoyed looking for all of the "Nina"s in each picture. A great collection of Al Hirschfeld's work.
