Olivier Föllmi has been photographing the Himalayas for the last twenty-five years. His previous books include Buddhist Himalayas, Offerings: Buddhist Wisdom for Every Day, and Origins: African Wisdom for Every Day. Föllmi lives in Annecy, France.

A Book of Homage

This picture book is truly a homage to the people the landscape and the spirit of the Himalayas. A fascinating tale of the author prefaces the book and the appendix gives some info on the photos themselves. Breathtaking, inspiring photos.

deeply moving photographs

I checked this book out of the library and fell in love with it. The landscapes have the quality of a dream, or a painting. I appreciated the photographer who would choose these sights to capture with the camera. The thumbnail index at the end was most interesting in explaining the fascinating images. And at a very reasonable price.

Places Less Travelled

Having grown up in the foothills of the Himalayas, and having witnessed, first hand, the flight of Tibetan refugees when the Chinese invaded Tibet, I was interested to see what sorts of images the author produced to illustrate this part of the world. I had also trekked in the area and had visited several of the smaller Himalayan kingdoms south of the area.
I have not visited that part of the world for over 30 years. The images in the book took me straight back. I am not a religious man, and so, the Buddhhist/spiritual base for creating the images mean nothing to me. This does not mean I am a heathen. On the contrary, I can see easily why people would feel spiritual in some of the cathedral-like (there's that wester-driven orthodoxy again...) snow and landscapes.
But for me, the folio showcased the area's most important attribute: the Tibetan people; their serenity, their loneliness, their simple way of life, their quick smile, their knowing eyes, their striking profiles against a stark and unforgiving terrain and their resoluteness in the face of a continuous and insiduous cultural genocide.
The landscape images are timeless captures of an ancient earth. There are muted greens,browns and grey which tug at the heart strings because of their majesty, aura and simplicity. Follmi paints with a masterly touch. Having been in the area of Ladakh (amongst others), and knowing how quickly light and shadow can change in this terrain, his landscape images speak of more than a mere acquaintance with the area. They are as magnificent as they are awe inspiring and they serve their purpose of making us humans ponder our own insignificance.
But it is images of the people which make his folio so special; people who are at one with, and fighting against the ravages of, nature. The deeply etched wrinkles of the elders and the rosy, chapped cheeks of the youngsters provide a road-map of life in the this high desert. Faces of a proud people who struggle daily against both the land they call home and against those from outside their borders who would remake that land in their own image.
Homage to the Himalayas is just that: a homage in every sense of the word. And rarely does a photographer bring that depth of feeling and empathy about the daily lives of ordinary people so exquisitely to life as does Oliver Follmi in this folio.
