This spin-off from an exhibition organized by Chicago's Art Institute and Seattle's Museum of Flight explores that question in an intriguing mixture of images and essays. Rocket scientists aren't artists per se, but most of them will admit to artistic inspiration. Take the inventors of the German V-2 missile. They were enthralled by Fritz Lang's film Frau im Mond (Woman in the Moon, 1929). Furthermore, after the war, they returned to and expounded on their dreams of moon and Mars missions in a visionary set of Collier's articles, whose artwork remains a fascinating presentation of space flight. The book's essayists elaborate on the public face of rocketry, critiquing the architecture of space age infrastructure (e.g., the gigantic Vehicle Assembly Building); exhibits on space flight, including the Soviet one on style in space design, that were presented at fairs; and movie design conceptions--above all, those of 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968).
