Dr. Moore has written a very thorough and precise analysis of Dr. Faduma's work trying to give his fellow man a equal deal in America and an equally advantageous situation by going back to the homeland. If any questions arise about the life and times of Dr. Faduma - the answers are in this splendid and well researched and scholarly work. From the beginning at Sierra-Leonne to the end in High Point, NC, Dr. Moore gives a great and thorough insight into this man's wonderful and unselfish work. It is a great and interesting read for anyone - white or black- African or American - and a thorough investigation into the life of this great man who gave his life-time to the service of his former countrymen and their descendants. A true volume of our history that is often overlooked and passed by, this is a book that surely should be taught in all schools in these United States of America.

New York, a city of skyscrapers and gardens, has much to teach the rest of the world about making gardens--despite, or perhaps because of, limited space and difficult conditions. In Gardens in the City: New York in Bloom, the juxtaposition of concrete and steel with the lush green of gardens makes a dramatic statement, in photos showing an amazing range of gardens, from public to private, from estates to pocket parks. What is most startling is the realization that it is in just such an inhospitable environment, fraught with daunting challenges, that plants and gardens are most needed and appreciated.

And these gardens do look appreciated. The smooth surface of the lily pool terrace at Brooklyn Botanic Garden reflects an ornate glass conservatory, the cherry walk at the United Nations is a frothy cloud of pink fluff, and wisteria clambers up the columns on a Carnegie Hill townhouse. Trees grow happily up the sides of Trump Tower, each on its own little terrace; neighborhood pea patches are squeezed between old brick buildings; and dining terraces awash in plantings look out over the city.

Many of the gardens are hidden away on rooftops or enclosed in courtyards, offering sanctuary and respite in the midst of a bustling city. These gardens have a feeling of quiet calm created by using lush, enveloping plantings, artworks, and monochromatic or simple, soothing color schemes. Fountains and ponds add water music to the mix. A must have for New Yorkers

If you have a private roof deck, you have to check this book out. I started designing a garden on my roof and the photographs in this book were inspiring. If you don't have a roof deck, well, this is great for all those New Yorkers who wonder just what is on top of some of New York's buildings (from high-rises to brownstone walkups).

Not only is this book filled with beautiful photos and illustrations, it also gives the reader a wonderful glimpse into the lives of women of the 19th century, including everything from the role of women in Victorian society to the style of dress of the era.
This is truly a great read for anyone interested in the lives of 19th century women.

Good non-academic brief survey

This is not a deep treatment of half of the species during the later 19th century, but while superficial, it's interesting, well written, and very well illustrated, mostly with reproductions of English "story paintings" of the period, heavy on Hunt, Millais, Rossetti, Burne-Jones, Crowe, and Sargent. The coverage runs from Victoria herself, who set the tone, and the myth vs. reality of the world of women at the time, to pioneering women in sport, education, the professions, and foreign travel. A nice afternoon's browse.

I enjoyed reading these letters. Bonnard told Matisse he couldn't work like Matisse. They both talk about their interest in windows.The difficulty of getting together in war time. Bonnard was older than Matisse . They had similar backgrounds, socially and educationally. Both studied the law.Both worked in Illustration,creating some of the greatest illustrated books of the 20th century.Both revered Renoir.For an intimate view of the minds of two of France's greatest artist read these letters.I found it worthwhile . Especially on their discussion of "windows".

This is a truly lovely book. If you're interested in the French Impressionists and Post-Impressionists it's a must read. The later letters written when the two painters were suffering the ravages of old age are infinitely inspiring.

Consistently astonishing and artfully wrought.

STONE CANYONS OF THE COLORADO PLATEAU contains 81 color photographs. Each of the photos occupies from 50-80% of the page. The book is large, 10 ¼ by 11 ¼ inches.

Most of the photographs are from Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness, a little known park overlooked by most publications dealing with the American Southwest. Vermilion Cliffs encompasses Paria Canyon, Coyote Buttes, and a stone formation called "The Wave." The stone formation called The Wave seems to be in an area about a quarter the size of a city block. Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness is noted for its conical, haystack-like stone formations. The book contains plenty of photos of artistic merit.

Page 5 shows a few cones at close range and a dozen cones in the distance. Where the desert floor is made of stone, the stone is striped like a candy cane. FIVE STARS for this photograph.

Page 9 shows Bryce Canyon, with snow-covered cliffs in the distance, and dark clouds overhead. FIVE STARS for this dramatic photo.

Page 20 shows snow-covered buckwheat and a dead juniper. FOUR STARS for this depictions of the texture of the snow residing on top of the buckwheat.

Page 26 shows a hoodoo in the sun. The hoodoo consists of a dark pancake of stone supported by a an orange, funnel-shaped pedestal. Half of the photograph is in deep shadow, a sloping hill of stone.

Page 35 shows an arch with a garden of cottonwoods beyond. FIVE STARS for this rare image of pastoral beauty.

Page 45 shows a close-up of two cones at Paria Canyon. One of the cones looks like a little house.

Page 45 shows an angled stone formation in a canyon wall at Paria Canyon. The crazy angles resemble those of a Kandinsky painting.

Page 67 (also seen as the cover photo) shows a pond at The Wave. This is one of the greatest landscape photographs ever taken in the history photography. FIVE STARS.

Page 69 shows a crazy, bizarre stone formation at Paria Canyon. What we see is a pancake consisting of a cluster of thin stone sheets, where the pancake is supported by two pedestals. This is one of the most bizarre landscape photographs taken in the history of photography. FIVE STARS.

Page 70 shows an excellent arrangement of cones in the distance, with swirling stone spirals, and a dead juniper in the foreground. The juniper has a spiraling grain. FIVE STARS.

Page 99 shows a slot canyon, where there are various qualities of light--a warming bath of glowing orange, a harsh white glare, an even indirect illumination with no shadow, and deep shadow. The image is reminiscent of those depicted in Bruce Barnbaum's astonishing book, VISUAL SYMPHONY.

Page 116 shows a dozen tiny waterfalls, where water spills from knife-edge stone formations that form the streambed. This unique image is somewhat reminiscent of David Muench's depiction of Havasupai Falls, in NATURE'S AMERICA (page 125 of NATURE'S AMERICA).

One wishes for more photos of The Wave. For those interested in more of The Wave, I recommend Reiner Sahm's book, CANYONLANDS PANORAMIC PHOTOGRAPHY. Reiner Sahm's book also introduces the reader to Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument, and to Goblin Valley State Park, two other parks vastly underrepresented by books on the American Southwest. Also Laurent Martres has two books (two volumes) on Utah and Arizona. The second volume features a number of photos of The Wave.

The quality of the prints in Mr.Dykinga's book is quite good. With the naked eye, one cannot discern any grain in the color prints. However, with a loupe (5X magnification), the grain is readily evident. The grain does not resemble specks, but instead takes a form resembling that of woven cloth.

Fortunately, only a minority of the photographs in Mr. Dykinga's book are flower pictures. There are only eight flower pictures. Also, fortunately, none of the photos contains people, e.g., tourists, hikers, or indigenous farmers. As is the case with Ansel Adams, Bruce Barnbaum, David Muench, and a handful of other photographers, Mr. Dykinga takes extra care (and time) to wait for the lighting conditions to be perfect, before depressing the shutter.

Mr.Dykinga is an experienced photographer, as indicated by the fact that he won the Pulizer Prize. The prize, awarded to him in 1971, was for his photographs at the Lincoln and Dixon State Schools for the Retarded in Illinois, when he worked for the Chicago Sun-Times.

Don't photo the Great SW landscapes without it

This is one of several photo books by this author, which are detailed guides to exactly where to locate specific subjects for landscape photography in the geographical areas covered by each book - there is some overlap between the books. There is some discussion of specific photo techniques, mainly addressing the issues imposed by the unique areas and subjects, including non-photo advise on how not to hurt yourself in what is mainly desert country. Primarily, this is a collection of directions in the nature of what landscape features are out there and how find them, with some comments on best techniques, lighting, and types of equipment to consider. Some caution might be applied to use of the guide to avoid mere duplication of the author's experience or photos. Prior to discovering this and its related guides, I have personally "been there and done that" over much of the same geography. I later bought the guides to plan new trips and found them well worth the cost and time invested. These guides are a great resource for planning if your time on the ground is limited and you want to maximize your experience.

An exquisite exploration of the Colorado Plateau

The number of photographic works exploring the nuances of the Colorado Plateau is seemingly endless. Many can be browsed once and left behind. This book is the scintillating exception.
Jack Dykinga's photographic work is simply exceptional, and beyond the pale. Each color photograph appears as exquisitely crafted as a piece of fine crystal, beginning with very cover of the paperback edition. One can only envy his great patience and expertise in composing each work.
Much of the photography comes from the Paria Wilderness, an area of the Plateau not usually treated to any degree in most works, and the novelty is refreshing. A particularly enjoyable facet of the book is that use of a telephoto lens has been largely eschewed, leaving a series of scenes that the enterprising tourist can find and view with his or her own eyes, just as depicted by the book.
Charles Bowden's accompanying text is evocative and hearkens a wild diffusion of images and memories of the fascinating region.
It is an apt companion to Dykinga's superb work.
If you are limited to five or less books about the Colorado plateau, let this be one of them. I enjoy it more every time I read it.

Brian Froud is an artist, author, designer, and faery authority. He is the author of Lady Cottington’s Pressed Fairy Book, Good Faeries / Bad Faeries, The Faeries’ Oracle, Brian Froud’s Goblins!, and The Heart of Faerie.

Alan Lee is an Academy Award–winning movie conceptual designer and illustrator. He is well known for his illustration of Tolkien’s Middle Earth books and The Lord of the Rings film trilogy.

Jane Yolen has written more than 200 books for children and adults, including the acclaimed The Devil’s Arithmetic.

One of the most beautiful books I own

My parents gave this to me for my fifth birthday and it is one of the most cherished and beautiful books that I own. It's a compilation of gorgeous watercolors, sketches, and a systematic like grouping of faeries and their mythical kin. I can't imagine a better book for a young artist or creative reader. I spent hours and hours poring over each illustration and reading about the origins of all the creatures. It has a Jim Henson-like quality in its imaginative spirit (echoed by one of the jacket covers which features Froud with a little puppet faery mannikin posed in a tree). Alan Lee is responsible for those gorgeous watercolors, while Brian Froud does the kinetic sketches (Froud was also the illustrator of Lady Cottingtons Book of Pressed Faeries--a funny and darkly humored picture book). Sidenote: Brian Froud's wife, Wendy, was one of the artists responsible for the very beautiful (if slightly dated) Dark Crystal and, I did not know this--YODA!! Who knew?! Wonderful news, too, the 25th edition of this book contains 20 new pieces by Froud and Lee.

As for the nakedness: When I was six I thought everyone's body was beautiful and nakedness definitely didn't put me off. The only times it was disturbing was when adults made a big deal of it. That and finding a discarded copy of Penthouse behind an abandoned building both fascinated and freaked me out. But Froud's book is nothing like that. I'd no more be upset by the nudity in this then I would by the nudity in Renaissance paintings. I'm guessing adults must read more eroticism into it than any child would. If you're really worried, check out Brian Froud's website--it has some of the illustrations from Faeries and will give you a better sense of it. Personally, I think it's a wonderful book for children. Not to harp on, but I don't think un-erotic and un-sensationalized exposure to nudity is a bad thing (and I don't mean that in a let's all be nudists manner...just a hey, we all got skin underneath our clothes recognition).

If there's someone in your life who has a fly-away imagination and appreciation for art or myth, this is a terrific choice.

Fantasically frightening

I first saw this book when I was 7 when my dad, knowing I loved both art and faeries, brought it home for me from the library. Needless to say, I loved it but several of the more intense drawings scared me! I dog-eared the scariest pages so I could skip over them easily... many years later I came across a copy of it and simply had to buy it. Not only is the art and text inspiring, but it's the kind of book that sticks in your mind over time...

If you thought you liked Lady C's Pressed Fairy Book (now out of print), then you'll LOVE this one!! It is the best faerie book i have ever seen, and read. It not only tells you the history of faeries, but it also gives you an idea where Faerie -the land of faeries- is, it gives you detailed information about all the wee folk! If you thought faeries were the pretty winged Tinkerbell likes, think again, and read this book! You'll get surprised on how many faerie types there is!!
The book is beautifully illustrated, and a must for every one interested in faeries, and art! This one should be in the bookshelf in every home! Buy it for yourself, for your mom, your kid and for your best friend!! It makes a great present!
Definately worth the money, i'd pay the double price if i had to, it's that great!

Ezra Pound's book on the French sculptor Henri Gaudier-Brzeska was first published in 1916. An enlarged edition, including thirty pages of illustrations (sculpture and drawings) as well as Pound's later pieces on Gaudier, was brought out in 1970, and is now re-issued as an ND Paperbook. The memoir is valuable both for the history of modern art and for what it shows us of Pound himself, his ability to recognize genius in others and then to publicize it effectively. Gaudier's talent was impressive and his Vorticist aesthetic important as theory, but he was killed in World War I at the age of twenty-three, leaving only a small body of work. They were living in poverty when Pound bought Gaudier the stone from which the famous "hieratic head" of the poet was made. Pound arranged exhibitions and for the publication of Gaudier's manifestoes in Blast and The Egoist. And he wrote and sent packages to him in the trenches, where Gaudier––a sculptor to the last––carved a madonna and child from the butt of a captured German rifle, just two days before he died.

New Directions has been the primary publisher of Ezra Pound in the U.S. since the founding of the press when James Laughlin published New Directions in Prose and Poetry 1936. That year Pound was fifty-one. In Laughlin’s first letter to Pound, he wrote: “Expect, please, no fireworks. I am bourgeois-born (Pittsburgh); have never missed a meal. . . . But full of ‘noble caring’ for something as inconceivable as the future of decent letters in the US.” Little did Pound know that into the twenty-first century the fireworks would keep exploding as readers continue to find his books relevant and meaningful.

Searching and revealing

Writen by one of the greatest writers of the 20th century, this is a documented example of an artist determined to go against the odds of poverty and obscurity to create his passion in art. Henri Gaudier, killed in WWI, who had created such a large body of work at an age when most people were still trying to figure out what to do in life, probably would have fallen from existance completly if it was not for the tireless promotions done by Ezra Pound. Pound's quest in bringing to light the few of worthy talent who would otherwise be lost in the sludge of mediocracy is an example of the "rather than looking at the master's finger, look at what the finger points at" belief by following in example rather than observing what is shown.

Instead of fawning over the man brought to the attention of the artworld, you are persuaded to become aware of those who have yet to be recognized. With being more sensitive to that which defines the 'good' from the 'not-so-good,' we benefit by learning from those who are worthy to learn from.

Entertaining!

Another great expressive book of a almost unheard of artist. If like me you stumble across this book you must pick it up and read it as I ensure you, you will be pleased. Not only just for the brilliant, modern pictures contained within but for the amazing life and work that Brzeska belived in and lived for. A must for all budding artists.

have not read it but love the movie upon which it's based. "savage messiah", is another one of the many underrated and under viewed films of the late great genius of ken russell.
