About the Author
Benjamin A. Rifkin is an art historian with a keen interest in the meanings of images in their historical context. He is currently working on studies of Rembrandt's history paintings and the European discovery of the Caribbean. Rifkin lives in New York City.
Michael J. Ackerman is a biomedical engineer and a pioneer in the field of medical informatics. He was the primary developer of the initial concept for the Visible Human Project, and has received numerous science awards. He lives in Maryland.
Judith Folkenberg is a freelance writer. She lives in Maryland.

Amazing Images, Thin Text

As a collection of anatomical images (the authors' intent, I believe), this book is extraordinary. Unfortunately, the accompanying text is too cursory, only giving the scantest amount of context to accompany the images. Singer's Short History of Anatomy from the Greeks to Harvey (despite its conspiratorial tone) and Sawday's The Body Emblazoned: Dissection and the Human Body in Renaissance Culture work well with this text to give a more-comprehensive view.

Great book on History of Human Anatomy

Very nice book to look & read about centuries of pictures on Anatomy. Well bound, so repeated usage will probably not cause it to fall apart. A must-read or must-have for anyone with an even remote interest in Anatomy and its history. At its price it may be too expensive in the hardcover edition for students, but there are (few) cheaper softcovers still available.

From the 1500s and beyond!

This was a great anatomy book. It starts with plates and viva sections from the 1500s and goes up until now with some digital images. The drawings are very graphic. Some are very disturbing and down right creepy. Several show the fetus, the intestines and many skeletons at all angles. A fascinating book.
