Broken dreams

Carl Warner has created some fantastic images, but the layout of this disappointing edition breaks most of them asymmetrically across two pages. That may protect them from unlicensed full reproduction, but it also prevents them from being displayed as they were conceived. You will do better to search for and view them online. Too bad.

Beautiful book!

This is a beautiful picturesque book with stories on how the artist created each piece of his work. It would make a wonderful coffee table book. Great for food and art lovers. One of the pieces I had looked forward to seeing in the book is the Parisian scene with Eiffel Tower in the background but it is not in the book.

True Food "Art"

I'd seen a reference to this book on some TV show I was watching, so I looked it up and ordered it for myself and my girlfriend who consider ourselves somewhat "foodies". Had it shipped to my office first where I skimmed through it, and showed it off to a few other guys in the office who also loved the book format, presentation, and artwork within. The book doesn't just show the finished artwork, but also shows how the food landscapes are created from artist conception, to construction, and finally digital enhancement. The end result is lovely photographs that you appreciate more by recognizing the various food pieces that make up the beautiful and surreal landscapes.

One of the guys at my office liked it so much that I wrapped the book and gave it to him to keep as a Christmas gift. He's an amateur photographer and his wife loves to bake, so he let me know that both he and his wife thoroughly enjoy the book and have it out on their coffee table along with other art books. I'll just have to (gladly) order a second copy for myself.

Gottfried's "Sondheim" earns my applause, but no ovation.

Quite a book, but not truly a definitive ''in depth" analysis of Mr. Sondheim's shows. Mr. Gottfried brings up many interesting points about Sondheim's shows, but doesn't really, fully completely explore each show, as I was expecting.

His "Sweeney Todd" analysis is basically just a long plot summary, with lyrical highlights from a few songs. I was most disappointed by the way Mr. Gottfried barely broke the surface in his analysis of "Assassins". However, there are many wonderful reviews, interviews, commentaries, and photographs. Perhaps my favorite is a portrait of Mr. Sondheim surrounded by his "Sunday in the Park with George" set

In his persuasive commentary, he reminds us that there would be no life without water and that "rivers are the water supply of the world." About the Author
Tim Palmer has been a writer, photographer, conservationist, speaker, and consultant on behalf of rivers since 1970, receiving multiple awards for his work, including the first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award from the nonprofit conservation organization American Rivers in 1988. He has written and photographed sixteen books including California Wild, which won the 2005 Benjamin Franklin Award for the best American book on nature and the environment. Palmer lives in Port Orford, OR.

Brilliant Set of Photographs

A photographer with the eye of an artist, Tim Palmer has spent a lifetime photographing rivers. He has gone to extremes to get just the right view, at the right time of day, the right time of the year. He has combines these photographs with prose that is almost poetic to add in our understanding of what he sees, what he feels.

I don't know just how many states he covers in these photographs, but perhaps the most dramatic pictures are those taken in Alaska. From the bears fishing for salmon, to the young wolf who has found a drowned sheep, the broad expanse of the mountains the pictures show nature at its most attractive.

Surprisingly though his pictures show the beauty that remains in the rivers of the lower 48. In spite of what has happened in terms of polution, concrete channalizing by the Corp of Engineers, there is beauty to be found. And Mr. Palmer has the eye to find that beauty.

About the Author
A graduate of London's Royal College of Art, writer and designer Andrew Haslam now leads the MA Communication Design course at Central Saint Martin's College of Art and Design in London. Best technical book on any subject I've seen for a while

When I opened this book and saw how slick and enticing it was, I was afraid that it might be just about the graphics side of book design. I wanted a technical book that provided a thorough coverage of the subject. I was not disappointed, however. This book gives a great treatment with clear, beautiful drawings that cover every subject from the aesthetics of page layout to mechanics of printing.

If you want to really understand book design then I highly recommend this wonderful book. Every page is delightful and yet full of important information.

Ideal!

While there are many, many design books and references available that contain most of the information in this book, this is the first time I've found such a good synthesis of content in one place. The order and organization of the book is extremely well thought out and logical, and the writing is excellent. I'm so happy to have found this book-- as a designer it's a wonderful reference, reinforcement, and source for learning. Definitely recommended.

This book doesn't have very good information for a new designer. The author's explanations of concepts are not clear. I didn't find this book helpful at all. You can find a lot of the information online for free. This book is not worth the cost.

For Graphic Designers and Junior Production Artists

An excellent primer on designing for print. Mark Gatter's writing style and focus is what sets this book apart; the books is well organized and accessibly written. It covers those questions you so often encounter on the job but never get useful answers to. He starts from the most basic level of knowledge such as CMYK versus RGB, but does not avoid such complex issues as colour profiles. He speaks to the most recent developments in document formats including InDesign and PDFs for print. Recently, design has become a dangerous business because of the resposibilties loaded on to the shoulders of designers. With this book, you will be able to make peace with your printer and get him to help you with some of that responsibility.

Out-dated and not-informative

First off, there IS some good information in here for a new designer. If you are not still in school, however, don't bother with this thing.

First off, I found the book to be outdated. For example, the author references "control panels" and the "chooser". Yep, that's right OS9! Additionally, he tells where to find certain commands within Photoshop CS, but then he gives lengthy explanations of where to also find the same commands within Photoshop 5! What?! Photoshop 5!?

One nit-picky problem I have with this book is author's use of the word "calibration" instead of "color-correction". I have NEVER heard any designer say they need to "calibrate" an image. Calibration has very specific association within the graphic-design world and that is with color-output and -input devices. I was utterly confused at chapter 9's title, "Calibrating color images". I understand that "calibrate" is gramatically correct but "color-correction" is the accepted nomenclature. (props to The Dude)

Next, the chapter about Photoshop's Color Managament system is only 8 pages long. The author basically states that Photoshop's defaults are fine and not to mess with CMS. I find this contradictary to my own expererience. A color ad CANNOT be converted to CMYK with the default settings and that same file sent to both a glossy magazine and newspaper. Good luck getting that ad to look good in newsprint! That's what this guys is proposing though. Ugh.

To be fair, his history of the printing process and basic color-correction techniques sections ARE pretty good. I cannot say i didn't pick-up a tip or two along the way. but the bad outweighted the good for me. I was really looking for something more advanced but this wasn't it.

A pretty poor version of Max's beautiful history

I am Roberta Bayley, and I am not featured in this book nor am I mentioned, which is absolutely 100% fine with me.

Leee Black Childers IS mentioned, as one of the four great Max's photographers, along with Anton Perich, Danny Fields and Brigid Berlin, and a photo OF Leee appears. However, NONE of Leee's photographs are included in either the book or the show about it at Steven Kasher Gallery. Leee is alive and well, and still an active photographer with many recent and upcoming shows. So why is he missing here? Absurd.

Every one of the Cockettes ( a very famous drag troupe from San Francisco with many documentaries and books about them extant) are identified only as "a Cockette" except for Pristine Condition. As if they didn't all have names! It's like showing a photo of Mick Jagger and John Lennon and captioning it "Mick Jagger and a Beatle".

Dee Dee's Ramone's wife, Vera, who recently published her own memoirs, is "unidentified"!!! Couldn't anyone make phone call? (Actually I learned that someone from Abrams, the publisher, DID make a phone call, to Lenny Kaye, who told them the "blonde in the photo" was Vera, Dee Dee's wife.) Many quite famous people are "unidentified" in this book. Where oh where were the research people on this? Talking to "editor" Steven Kasher? The "unidentified" chimp at Max's was the World's Most Famous trained chimp, J. Fred Muggs! (Do you think Mickey would let just ANY chimp into Max's?)

I also have to say I was appalled when the New York Times article about this book and show gave Steven Kasher credit for having "helped discover previously unknown pictures of Max's from insiders like music producer and writer Danny Fields." (BTW Danny Fields is not a music producer.)

As co-curator with Bobby Grossman of a show entitled "The Cool & The Crazy" in 1996 (which travelled to the Candice Perich Gallery in Conneticut, Govinda Galley in Washington D.C. and the Earl McGrath Gallery in Manhattan), Danny was included as a photographer, with his photos of Max's from 1973, including his contact sheets. An aborted mish mosh of different photographers who are NOT Danny adorn the cover of this poorly conceived book. In other words, it looks like a contact sheet, but isn't really because many different photographers are pasted in. That's the exact opposite of a contact sheet.

Danny Fields was also included in a book and show I curated in 2004 called "Bande a part: New York Underground 60s, 70s, 80s" (the book is still in print in the U.S. from Gingko Press). This book includes many of Danny's photos, including his Max's contact sheets. Some years ago, I proposed the "Bande a part" show to Steven Kasher for his gallery but he passed. He saw the book a long time ago (before it was published in the U.S.) and was well aware of Danny's so-called "unknown" photos. Also included in "Bande a part" were photographers Anton Perich, Billy Name, Marcia Resnick, Godlis, and Stephanie Chernikowski, including many of the exact same images reproduced in this book.

So much for the originality and accuracy of this book. It is a joke. We all look forward to books by Danny Fields, Leee Black Childers, Brigid Berlin and many more photos (and books!) by the great Anton Perich.

Save your money, this book will be remaindered soon. Try to find Yvonne Sewall (Ruskin)'s Max's book instead. Or buy "Bande a part"!

"New York was such a pity, but at Max's Kansas City, we won"

Had I not owned the book "High On Rebellion: Inside the Underground At Max's Kansas City" by Yvonne Sewall-Ruskin (former wife of Max's owner, Mickey Ruskin), I may have given this a higher rating. "Max's Kansas City: Art, Glamour, Rock and Roll" is glossier in packaging (although it has 12 years on "High On Rebellion", so that isn't surprising), in that, the pictures are bigger, there are more color pictures, etc., but that's about the only thing it can boast over the other. As a 24-year-old girl with a passion for rock n' roll, but who obviously wasn't around back in the early 70's when the back room at Max's was the hottest place to be, I learned of the famed nightclub mostly from collecting issues of Rock Scene magazine, a New York-based music mag that heavily featured bands like the New York Dolls and the Stooges, and they were always reporting about Max's. And although I am in no way an aficionado or expert on the era, I thought the research done for "Art, Glamour, Rock and Roll" was a bit "lazy" to say the least. As pointed out by photographer Roberta Bayley, several recognizable people are heinously labeled as "unidentified". There isn't much text in the book either, but as I was purchasing it for the photos, that part didn't really bother me (but if you're looking for an introduction to Max's, I wouldn't look to this as the answer). If you are buying this book as a complement to High On Rebellion, I would say go for it. Although some of the same photos are featured, there are plenty of different ones, although most aren't that rare, and I was a bit disappointed that there was but one photo of Cyrinda Foxe (former wife of David Johansen and Steven Tyler, a Warhol darling, and a back room staple), and it was one I'd already seen many times before. Still, if you are looking for the usual suspects (Iggy, David Johansen, Patti Smith, Gerard Malanga, Lou Reed, Candy Darling) you can find them here (plus, there are a couple of good quality pictures of the luminously beautiful young Bebe Buell). Other books not strictly about Max's but that put this book to shame are "Bande A'part: New York Underground 60s, 70s, 80s", Patti Smith's prizing-winning "Just Kids", and even "New York In The 70s" isn't bad.

In her fifth book, social art historian Borzello has "tried to make sense of what I was seeing by treating the self-portraits as painted versions of autobiography." Borzello has chosen vivid self-portraits of women from middle ages to the present that reveal cultural characteristics of an era as well as ideographic inclusions of the artist's perception of herself. As in every autobiographical sketch, imagery is selective. Thus many portraits of earlier centuries are modeled on those of male painters, palette on one arm, brush poised in the other, both indicating serious intent. But despite this earlier evidence of fine self portraiture, it was not until the late 19th century that art began to be recognized as a legitimate and significant field for women. Borzello's text, accompanied by the 240 well-chosen illustrations (100 in color) is a history of the marked separation of male/female domains in daily life, as well as women's ability to skirt prevailing male traditions and portray an inner life that transcended domesticity. The transition from subtle details?the setting the portraitist chose for herself, the style of dress and hair, the placement of her hands?to the startling freedom of 20th-century imagery that revealed women artists as "independent and unshackled by conventional notions of feminine behavior" is arresting. The visual manifestation of how women see and represent themselves may seem elusive, but Borzello does a fine job of illuminating the subject, without overly simplifying it.

Books of this high caliber are few and far between in feminist art history. Borzello, a specialist in the social history of art, aimed to "present women artists' self-portraits as a genre in its own right." She succeeds admirably, creating a work that is exciting yet factual, inspiring without indulging in hyperbole, and that stands as one of the finest single volumes on women artists appearing in at least a decade. Written in elegant prose that will draw in even casual readers, it bears a wealth of new material on both well-known and practically unknown artists, with 240 illustrations?100 of them in large format and excellent color. After the preface and introduction, there are separate chapters covering the 16th through 20th centuries, with headings that range from "the presentation of self" to "breaking taboos," and comments called "drawing breath." For example, of the late 1960s Borzello writes, "These were the glory days of feminist art, when indignation fueled the artists and everything seemed possible." To demonstrate, she discusses Louise Bourgeois's "Torso/Self Portrait," c.1963-64, and Sylvia Sleigh's "Philip Golub Reclining," 1971. Women artists have been painting self-portraits since the 12th century but, notes Borzello, a specialist in the social history of art, the genre has received surprisingly little attention. Her thorough, lucid study goes a long way toward providing a remedy for that oversight. Women artists have painted themselves for the same reasons as male artists--to call attention to their skills, to emulate the self-portraits of past masters, to express elements not appropriate to other kinds of subject matter, such as wit or a sharp sense of social criticism, and to boldly announce particular beliefs about art. But they have also done so for some unique reasons: to claim a place among serious artists, to explore the often peculiar status of women in Western societies, and to examine the issue of feminine beauty. Borzello traces women's self-portraits across eight centuries, deftly weaving together art and social history, the biographies of many women artists, and a wide selection of paintings, prints, and photographs by women. While some of the pieces are primarily of historical interest, there are some stunning works here, including period works by such accomplished painters as Artemisia Gentileschi and Rosalba Carriera and modern works by such little known but talented painters as Zinaida Serebryakova and Lotte Laserstein, and paintings by such familiar figures as Frida Kahol and Paula Modersohn-Racker. This book about women artists seen by themselves is very useful for Art History education. But it's also very interesting for everybody wanting to know more about women artists and Art HERstory.

I've read the book in it's Dutch translation "kijken naar onszelf". For all those who can understand Dutch: het is een zeer interessant boek, waarin de auteur de geschiedenis van de vrouwelijke kunstenaars behandelt vanuit de zelfportretten die deze vrouwen van zichzelf hebben gemaakt. Daarbij plaatst zij de vrouwen in de sociaal-maatschappelijke context waarin zij leefden en dat geeft een goed beeld van de situatie. Het toont ook de moeilijkheden die vrouwelijke kunstenaars door de eeuwen heen hebben moeten overwinnen om te kunnen existeren in de kunstwereld die een mannenwereld was/is. Het boek behandelt de vrouwen vanaf de renaissance tot eind 20e eeuw.

Gottfried Benn (1886-1957) occupies a position in modern German literature often compared to that of T. S. Eliot and Ezra Pound in English. This volume presents a comprehensive anthology of the author’s finest work-poetry (with the German originals en face), short stories, a scene from one of his plays, essays and autobiographical writings, including a unique insight into the German intellectual metamorphosis before, under and after Hitler. And in a long introduction, the editor, E. B. Ashton, places Benn in the perspective of recent German history and gives an account of his life––a dramatic and moving story in its own right. By profession a physician, Benn was fascinated by the philosophical aspects of many branches of science, and over the years he wrote a number of extraordinary essays in which the poet’s intuitive vision was accorded the utmost imaginative freedom.

About the Author
Gottfried Benn (1886-1956) was born a pastor’s son in Brandenburg Province, Prussia. After graduation, he entered the army as a military surgeon and was discharged in 1912, only to be recalled for the duration of World War I. In 1932, Benn was elected to the Poetry Section of the Prussian Academy of Arts. World War II brought many problems for him; in 1938, he was forbidden to publish and was forced to flee to Berlin. Benn didn’t begin publishing again until eleven years later. He passed away in 1956 in Berlin.

a flawed genius

At present I am translating for an English publisher a collection of poetry and prose by Gottfried Benn. So I am familiar with the title piece ÒPrimal VisionÓ or ÒUrgesicht.Ó It is one of the pieces I have excluded from my collection, and here is why: It is very hard to translate. As a linguist, I am not afraid of the sheer difficulty, but there is also an other aspect. Translating imaginative literature is not like translating for the United Nations. There are 2 major barriers: an unfamiliar language and unfamiliar conventions of style. The problem is to translate faithfully without producing something too outlandish to be acceptable for the English/American reader.

BennÕs ÒPrimal VisionÓ is hard to categorize - it is not a story, but it also is not like the explanatory prose for an essay. At best we should think of it as a verbal collage or a prose poem in RimbaudÕs vein. There is a line of thought behind it - or rather an obsession, one of BennÕs pet-hates. It is a powerful expression of the authorÕs disgust with the empirical realism of modern science (written by an extremely well trained scientist) and also expresses a for the time very common sentiment of disappointment with rationalism and neo-Kantian idealism. Plenty of Ò-isms.Ó But none of this shows on the glittering surface created by one of the great linguistic geniuses in his language.

Benn had a small but devoted following in France, way back in the nineteen twentieth. He was credited to be one of the 4 major poets of his time in the whole of Europe. In his own country he was less appreciated, but still acknowledged as one of the leading intellectuals before 1933. Then came Hitler and Benn fell into the trap of his own irrationalism. He found the vulgarity of the Nazis despicable, and he certainly was no anti-Semite, but he agreed on a particularly nasty point, little debated, if at all, that made him a Nazi-sympathizer even after 1945: Benn was a physician by profession, he had a profound understanding of genetics and at least since 1930 his work is laced with approving remarks on eugenic policies, policies which in the hands of the Nazis meant Òmercy killingsÓ of the mentally impaired and mandatory castration of carriers with hereditary diseases. Benn himself had a sister suffering from hereditary glaucoma and he was convinced that even his own family had to be cut off from the gene pool.

The result was BennÕs very public commitment to the Nazis after 1933. It immediately ruined his international reputation and alienated him from most of his friends, of which many had fled into exile. However the new masters smelled a rat. Benn was too intellectual, too sharp, too ÒcynicalÓ for their taste; his publications before 1933 contained passages of what could be interpreted as ÒliberalÓ (read his essay on abortion) and lax on morals. BennÕs unflinching view on the facts of biological life earned him the denigration of a Òpervert and sodomite.Ó As a doctor he was stricken from the list of G.Ps. entitled to write subscriptions under the national health insurance act - which was tantamount to professional suicide. As an author he was still able to publish until 1938; then official censorship put an end to his literary career as well. Benn retreated into army service in the rank of a colonel in the medical corps. In this function he produced a study on the causes of suicide. Had this study sent the wrong message, widows of war veterans who had committed suicide could have lost their pensions. Benn knew this, and he argued therefore, that suicide is a completely spontaneous act out of a momentÕs inspiration. The widows continued to receive their pensions.

After the war Benn regained part of his literary reputation, but he never recanted the views that made him commit his political boo-boo in the first place - a fact conveniently glossed over by his admirers. ÒPrimal VisionÓ contains all the seeds and intellectual props which led to BennÕs downfall, but they are so thoroughly embedded in BennÕs dazzling rhetorics that it passed unnoticed. It is a brilliance that obscures the real issues under a veneer of an elitist but hollow art-philosophy which in its days had been influential for more than half a century. Benn was a great talent and the living example that even genius is no protection against flaws of character.

An indispensable part of modern German poetry

Gottfried Benn, a German writer and doctor who served in both World War I and World War II, occupies a curious place in the annals of modern literature. His contribution to German letters in the 20th century is undeniable, but his work centers so strongly on the grotesque and horrible that he has never risen to the levels of adoration reserved for poets like Rilke. This is understandable, but a bit of a shame. (Benn's obsession with images of death, decay, and disfigurement are not surprising, considering the fact that during World War I he was stationed in Brussels, where he was in charge of treating the venereal diseases of prostitutes and prisoners of war.) "Primal Vision" is a comprehensive collection of his poems and prose. The prose works are translated into English, and the poems are printed in both English translation and in the original German. This book is perfect for English readers who have never before encountered Benn. (Fans of Benn may want to also check out the album "Morgue" by the German band Das Ich, which sets many of Benn's early poems to music.)

Not what I expected

I had read one or two of Gottfried Benn's medical poems in a poetry workshop. I loved them and bought this book thinking I'd discover more gems. Instead, I found myself challenged by language and construction that were, at best, obscure, and at worst, barely made sense, at least to me. Some of this problem might have had to do with the fact that the book translates essays and poems from German; perhaps some of the interpretations were awkward. Much of the content is also philosophical, which is not my cup of tea. Finally, it wasn't clear whether he was a Nazi sympathizer or not, and the ambiguity was unsettling. What was clear is that he identified strongly with whatever the national character was going through at the time the material was written, and that was the one aspect of the book that was provocative and compelling. I may still try to tough this one out, but it won't be easy.
