The specter of Borges hangs heavily over this inventive novel by Vila-Matas (Bartleby & Co.). The title refers to "literature-sickness," an affliction suffered acutely by the narrator, a famous Spanish writer named José Cardoso Pires, who publishes under his mother's name, Rosario Girondo. The Borgesian tropes, doubles and doppelgängers multiply from there. Presented as pieces of a diary, the book's five parts include a "nouvelle" titled "Montano's Malady"; a memoiristic account of the nouvelle's genesis; a biographical dictionary of the narrator's influences; diatribes at the perceived betrayals by his wife, Rosa; his friend, Tongoy; and by art. The entire novel is suffused with quotations and reflections on the diary form as an alternative to the fiction that the narrator (who travels frequently) is blocked from writing. The diary's fictionality pushes these claims into a narrative mise en-abyme, one from which the action never emerges. From the very first page, Vila-Matas embeds clauses as deeply as he embeds his characters' identities in hallucinatory sets of relations. While the exhaustion of this kind of metafiction is one of his themes, it doesn't save the book from its own devices.

About the Author
Enrique Vila-Matas was born in Barcelona in 1948. His novels have been translated into eleven languages and honored by many prestigious literary awards including the Prix Médicis Etranger. Author of Bartleby & Co., Montano’s Malady, and Never Any End to Paris, he has received Europe’s most prestigious awards and been translated into twenty-seven languages.
Jonathan Dunne was born in Kingston-upon-Thames, England, in 1968 and studied Classics at Oxford University. He is director of the publishing house Small Stations Press. He translates from Bulgarian, Catalan, Galician and Spanish into English.

An Urgent Review!

I am really surprised that nobody has reviewed this book ever since its publication. This is, then, an urgent review. If you are interested in contemporary Spanish literature, or in contemporary literature in general, read Vila-Matas! Let me tell you a few reasons why you should.
Since the publication of Historia abreviada de la literatura portátil in 1985, Vila-Matas has embarked on the journey of writing a personal history of world literature. Sometimes it is as if Vila-Matas is a sort of messenger of a legion of writers that include (but doesn't limit itself to) Kafka, Walser, Gombrowicz, Hemingway, Pessoa, etc etc. But these writers are not the ones we stumble upon in encyclopedias, or even in their books, and rather become an indelible part of Vila-Matas' imagination.
Vila-Matas seeks the irreducible anecdote of the short story, the inexhaustible narrative of the novel, and the precise truth of the essay, but does not limit himself to any one of these genres.
Montano's Malady constitutes the other side to the story told in Bartleby and Company. Whereas in Bartleby... he recounted the story of those writers who, like Rulfo or Herman Melville's character, felt the urge to stop writing (or publishing) all of a sudden, in Montano's Malady the protagonist is compelled by the inexhaustible freedom of creation. Vila-Matas' main theme, I believe, is the quoting of modern and classic literary sources as the only form of authorial legitimacy.
I hope I succeeded in convincing you. Along with Bartleby & Co., Montano's Malady is the proof of Vila Matas' unique mastery and talent in contemporary Spanish letters.

If you like the idea of merging autobiographical musings on artistic works ...

I honestly believe Enrique Vila-Matas wishes he were Sergio Pitol, who he actually mentions in this book as a kind of mentor. V-M attempts in this book to extend the idea of semi-autobiographical narrative-cum-essay as a legitimate literary form, but his lack of inventive talent ultimately drags this book down to a disposable level, at least for me. It's true one can learn a lot here, just note down the names of authors mentioned that you've not heard of. They're all worth tracking down. V-M's primary virtue is his genuine love of literature, and his knowledge is extensive and quite interesting. But the story-like frameworks he constructs are so flimsy, so utterly lacking in any kind of interest that, for me it failed completely as an interesting read in its own right, particularly since he recycled the main "narrative" themes more than once in altered form. Tell a slight story once, ok maybe, but thrice, time to be quiet.
If you like the idea of merging autobiographical musings on artistic works as a literary form check out Pitol's _The Art of Flight_, available here at Amazon. The difference is in the role of the narrator. Pitol appears as an extremely well-informed appreciator of art music and literature, but he never takes center stage, at least not explicitly, whereas Vila-Matas is way too much present, a bore in fact, and not a particularly amusing one.
