Great book to introduce your child to modern art

This ABC book uses the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York to teach children the alphabet. Using well-known works of art such as Matisse's "Dance" for the letter "D" and van Gogh's "Starry Night" for the letter "N", this children's book introduces the alphabet by looking at different interpretations by well-known artists of what an elephant (E) or a vase (V) may look like. We have really enjoyed this book - even as early as 18 months.

Ceramic tiles are unjustly neglected in the realm of decorative arts, possibly because they are more often seen as decorative features of larger constructions rather than as individual works. The opulent color illustrations offered by Van Lemmen ( Victorian Tiles , State Mutual Book & Periodical Serv., 1990) give full justice to decorative tiles from medieval times to the present, showing their versatility both indoors and out. However, the text is somewhat overshadowed by the splendor of the illustrations and does not have as much depth as one would like. Still, this international survey has only one predecessor in English, Anne Berendsen's Tiles: A General History ( LJ 10/15/67); and while Berendsen's book includes Europe and the Middle East, Van Lemmen covers Europe and North America. This welcome addition to a sparse field is recommended for all decorative arts collections.

A superb coverage of the world history of architectural tiles

This is a coffee table books par excellent. It is supremely illustrated, as it should be, with excellent photographs of architectural tiles. The text is arranged in a general chronological order as opposed to a geographical order. The scope of the text is worldwide and, given the challenges of such a broad spectrum, this book does a remarkable job in covering its subject. Although one might quibble that there are gaps in the coverage, those gaps are narrow with the result that a surprisingly thorough overview is accomplished in this excellent book. I highly recommend it for all who have an interest in the architectural used of ceramic tiles.

A spectacularly beautiful book!

Tiles: 1,000 Years of Architectural Decoration by Hans van Lemmen (with a chapter by Susan Tunick) is a spectacularly beautiful book. This richly visual tour of tiles from medieval through modern times is fascinating from both an architectural and artistic point of view. Tiles both practical and fanciful, machine manufactured or handmade and painted, are lushly photographed. For the artist or tile muralist, this is a wonderfully inspirational and exciting resource! It is the best book on tiles that I have ever seen, visually appealing and lovely. Highly recommended.

Tiles for all ages.....

I just returned from Sheboygan WI home of Kroeler--the bathroom fixtures firm. While there, I visited the Kroeler Art Museum which houses several "interesting" public restrooms. One of the more amusing pastimes in this little town is inspecting restrooms filled with Kroler plumbing fixtures -- and modern tiles. The Kroeler Design Center displays a number of newer items.
I was supprised to see no mention of Kroeler's modern works in this book, but hey, it's tough to cover 1,000 years of anything. Several major European firms are mentioned over and over, however. The bulk of the tiles displayed in this book (in situ in most cases) are located in Europe, which makes sense. Until the Dutch started using tiles as ballast in their sailing ships, not many tiles made it to the New World.
The book opens with a discussion of the earliest tiles found in Europe, those created 'For God and Earthly Princes.' Many of these tiles are found in Moorish-Christian Spain. The next chapter, 'Painted Magnificence' looks at 15th Century tiles from Italy, the early Maiolica (book's spelling) from Italy is beautiful. Some of it is too ornate for my tastes, but there are several lovely pieces. Later sections cover my favorites--Dutch, northern French, English and Scandanavian and Art Deco.
Tiles have been used in buildings because of their fire resistance properties (fire places and mantles in particular), hygienic qualities (bath houses and kitchens), and low need for maintenance (businesses, public buildings, and transportation sites). Some of the most amazing tiles are found in the Underground Stations in London. Other cities (Paris, Toronto, New York) have followed suit to a certain extent. I have taken the subway all over London just to see the station decoration. The book shows details from the Shrub Hill station in Worcester England which is decorated with Maw and Company majolica tiles (book spelling). The station scene depicting 'Jack climbs the Beanstalk' was executed in 1875, and thank goodness no one modernized it.
In a section titled the 'March of the Machine' a page from the Villeroy and Boch tile catalogue is presented along with many examples of mass produced tiles 'in situ.' 'The Triump of the Designer' takes the reader forward to the Art Deco period when Minton, W.B. Simpson and Sons, Wedgwood and other china manufacturers created art tiles for bathrooms, kitchens, and public buildings. Shown are Harrods Meat Hall in London, tin-glazed tiles in a private home in Amsterdam, and the kitchen of the palatial summer home of the Czar.
'The New World' examines tile displays in America, from New York City to California. Shown are a riverboat scene in a ceramic plaque at the Fulton street subway station on Lexington Avenue in New York, the 1913 Dixie Terminal in Cincinnati, and a picture of a Pennsylvania Dutch farmer created by the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works in Pennsylvania.
The book is beautiful. It contains detailed and larger photos of whole walls in situ. It is a survey type book, covering 1,000 years of tiles in Europe and America -- a good book if you contemplate collecting tiles, or visiting the places where tiles are mounted. Unfortunately, much was lost in WWII. Luckily, much remains.

Fabulous book!

Extremely well written and the pictures are just incredible! I went to Kenya last year and met several Maasai during my safari; this book captures every facet of their intriguing life. If you don't think you will ever make it to Africa and are interested in the ways of life of the Massai, then this is the book for you.

Incredibly acurate portrayal of the Maasai and their culture

Maasai, is a wonderful book. It is filled with colorful and vivid photographs. In addition to the incredible photos, the book shares the sheltered Maasai culture with the outside world. This book provides the reader with an unimaginary view of the "tall, proud and aristocratic" tribesmen. Upon completion, you will appreciate their culture like you never imagined possible.

When I first saw the Maasai book I thought to myself, "Oh great another huge boring book I have to read." However when I opened to the first page the magnificent photographs of the book captured me. I was amazed at the quality of them as well as moved by many of the pictures. This book takes you through the journey of the life of a Maasai. It all starts out with an introduction of the Masaai, then talks about youth, circumcision, warriors, elders, and then wraps it all up with a personal reflection by the author on the Masaai. The book was both informative and interesting at the same time.

Previously I had studied the Masaai in school and thought I learned everything. However when I picked up this book I found out that there was much to learn. Some of the interesting facts I learned included the back-story on how the Masaai originated, how they transition from warrior to adulthood, and the importance of elders in the Masaai society. The author's personal reflection about the Masaai talked about how the modern world is affecting the Maasai today. The book began talking about simple Masaai childhood. Childhood was brief and explained what the kids did around the village. Some of the games they engaged in however surprised me because of the danger factor involved in them. It then slowly transitioned to the awkward teenage stage, which is probably the hardest for the people in the society to go through. In the society it is the stage right before circumcision. The book really gave me an inside view of what it's like to be a preteen in that society. It did such a good job that I was able to understand why kids would want to get circumcised in the first place. After that it transitions to the actual process of circumcision, which after reading the book seems pretty scary if you ask me. That was the only part I actually had learned in class. However it also talked about the many processes, which occur after circumcision. The process of this is both physically and mentally challenging but according to the book pays off in the end. This was definitely one of the most interesting parts of the book because I could sort of relate to them in a way, since I am a teen myself.

After finishing the that chapter and looking at many great photos, the book starts to talk about the intense process of warrior hood. I was surprised how much the Maasai value certain things in warrior hood such as their hair. After warrior hood the book briefly talks about lives of the elders then it moves onto the personal reflection. It began with the quote, "From the farm, the tragic fate of the disappearing Maasai tribe on the other side of the river could be followed from year to year. They were fighters who had stopped fighting a dying lion with his claws clipped, a castrated nation. Their spears have been taken from them, their big dashing shields even, and in the Game Reserve the lions followed their herds of cattle." That quote came from the author Isak Dinesen who wrote the book Out of Africa.

The author then began talking about his personal reflection of the Maasai today and explained how modern civilization was enclosing on the Maasai fast. He, being a Maasai himself talked about how the Maasai must adjust to society for their own protection. According to the author since civilization is advancing so quickly the Maasai cannot fight against it and as the old expression goes, "Can't beat them, join them." Unfortunately the Maasai are defenseless to civilization and must take up the basic aspects of it such as education, land, and resources. At the second page of the personal reflection the author talks about the conflict the Maasai have faced with regarding land. Ever since 1901 the Maasai have had conflict with the Europeans. In 1910 their land was taken over for colonization. According to the Author by now the government has taken over the Maasai land and has taken away a lot ever since the Europeans invaded in the first place. In the end he wrote down suggestions for what the government should do to better improve life for the Maasai. He finally ends on the note that although the Maasai are facing difficult obstacles right now, they will still pull through in the end. So if you like books with information, great photography, and a nice smell this book is definitely for you.

Annotations could be described as a bildungsroman, as a collection of short recits by unnamed and undetermined narrators, an elegy to the rise and fall of Keene's native St. Louis, a meditation on the African American influence there and much, much more. It may sound daunting, but Keene's masterful prose smoothly transgresses traditional lines of representation and description without ever seeming like an exercise in multi-thematic chaos. Keene's ambitious attempts to convey subtle beauty and complex emotions through obscure allusions occasionally beg for more extensive explanation than that provided by the notes at the end of the text. Still, Annotations is a work that should not be ignored and is worthy of the highest recommendation. It is an experimental work that pinpoints a new direction for literary fiction in the 21st century.

Keene's slim first novel appears to be a disguised autobiographical narrative whose power resides in formidable imagery and the virtuoso use of language. The plot, if there is one, concerns a young black man's coming of age from birth to college years. Along the way while commenting aphoristically, he encounters many characters with unique personal outlooks and participates in gay and straight sexual experiences that he seems to avoid as often as not. But one does not read this book for its story. In fact, it should be read twice: once to get an idea of events and a second time to savor its language and pounding images (e.g., from the first page: "A crueler darkening, as against the assured arrival of dusk"). Keene's artistry makes him a writer to watch. Highly recommended for literary and African American collections.

Reminiscent of Jean Toomer's Cane, the book is in part a meditation on African-American autobiography. Keene explores questions of identity from many angles - from race to social class to sexuality (gay and straight). Employing all manner of textual play and rhythmic and rhetorical maneuvers, he (re)creates his life story as a jazz fugue-in-words.

Have you ever been reading a book and wanted to know what was going on somewhere else in the story? Or earlier? Or later? Or in the author's head? *Annotations* gives you the sense that you are looking out over the story and deep within the characters at the same time. Such a patient, delicate, tight weave. Tight, so there's a firmness to this writing, too. On the one hand, we get to see what's going on inside as we see the surfaces of things. The narrative is not left vulnerable to readers' whims, though. The constantly shifting perspectives teach us not just how to get through the book, but also what to make of it.

experimental biography that works - almost

How does one write a generic autobiography? Keene has given us an example. In telling of his upbringing in St. Louis, we learn of the flight of whites from the suburbs into which Afro-Americans had moved, we learn of the heritage of the city as multi-cultural, of growing up with an alcoholic parent, of growing up gay etc. Only occasionally is the narrative "personal" in the sense of revealing something about the narrator which we could not know without the self-revelation of the narrative. The result is wonderful prose, interesting structure, and literature that exists only for itself - never revealing something new, specific about the human condition.

The African Americans of the south are the poorest of the poor, their resources are limited and efforts at brining them in the mainstream such as this document are certainly prized again my hats off for a well written and long awaited document

Great resource!!

This is a really wonderful book to read! The author did a very thorough job of researching and presenting the history of library services during the pre-Civil Rights era in the South, with his decade by decade analysis of events and happenings during this period. I like how each chapter concludes with a bibliography of resources for further reading. Overall, this book has inspired me to continue to grow as a librarian of color and has made me more appreciative of what librarians and patrons went through to ensure equal access to library services and library employment for people no matter what their color or race. Librarians and those with an interest in African American history would be wise to add this book to their reading list.

Selina Hastings, the Countess of Huntingdon, was the chief administrator behind the Calvinistic wing of Methodism, and was its main organizer. She leased chapels, purchased advowsons (the right to nominate a person to hold a church office), and appointed chaplains and lay preachers to staff the far-flung connection of more than sixty-seven chapels and preaching posts. She established a college for the training of preachers and operated an orphanage.

In the Midst of Early Methodism: Lady Huntingdon and Her Correspondence introduces the Countess of Huntingdon to a modern readership from the vantage point of her own letters and papers. As a friend and confidant to most of the leading figures of the Eighteenth Century, English revival, Lady Huntingdon was indeed, located In the Midst of Early Methodism. Among her frequent correspondents were John and Charles Wesley, George Whitefield, Philip Dodderidge, and many lesser-known evangelicals. Through the works of her most illustrious chaplain, George Whitefield, the Countess also became involved in religion and politics in North America. Hence, her voluminous correspondence includes letters to and from George Washington, John Jay, and Phillis Wheatley, an early African American Poetess. This is the first representative anthology of the letters and papers of Selina Hastings, which are presented chronologically from the early years of her marriage through her last days and death.

These studies are impressive works of scholarship, based upon painstaking research in the Countess's massive correspondence and other contemporary materials. (New Perspectives on the Eighteenth Century)

She corresponded with the Wesleys, George Washington, John Jay and African American poet Phillis Wheatley. She appointed chaplains and ran the business of nearly 70 chapels, operated an orphanage and established a seminary. The efforts of Selina Hastings, Countess of Huntington, were integral to all the eighteenth century revival movement and to Methodism in particular. In this collection, which begins as she is married and ends as she is dying, we read of her concerns for John Wesley's peace of mind, her substantial finances, and her ability to know which candlesticks were at which chapel awaiting the new preacher. We read her assessments of the Calvinism with which she is so closely associated, and the means by which she intends to illuminate all with it. Mostly, she informs us that women of the period could be capable and powerful as well as prayerful. (Reference and Research Book News)

Break out the superlatives -- this book is unbelievable

The English language hasn't invented words sufficient to describe the photographs in this magnificent book. Shirakawa's photographs are so mind-blowing that they almost reach out and grab you and propel you up to the Roof of the World. There are full page and double-page photos galore, and some foldout plates that will literally take your breath away. Shirakawa took his photographs at all hours of the day and night; we see the Himalayas in all their majesty in the muted shades of dawn, glowing crimson and purple at sunset, sharply etched at high noon, snow and ice crystals glittering like an overturned jewel box, and lushly green valleys in the foothills. The book is divided into four sections representing the Nepal, Punjab and Sikkim Himalayas, and the Hindu Kush range in India. The text is absorbing and relates the geographical evolution of the Himalayas, as well as giving us a brief look at the history and culture of the people who live in their shadow. But the text is a pale shadow to the incredible, magnificent pictures. Looking at these awesome photographs, one can almost believe in the existence of Shangri-La.

An unaltered view of heaven.

The main feature of this book is that Yoshi photographed the jewels of the earth with NO filters or manipulations. The photos are straight 35mm, with many different lenses, but only pure glass laying down the image to film. I have met the author at a book signing and was impressed by his diminutive stature but strength of spirit. I am fortunate to own the first edition of this tome with its ivory clasps and hardboard covers. It will remain a family treasure and inducement for travel for my family.

The reproductions of Lichtenstein's work are large format, in full color, and provide eye candy for kids who aren't interested in reading the text. Cleverly inserted in between Lichtenstein's pieces are reproductions of the classic and comic-book art that inspired him, such as Henri Matisse's The Red Studio and even advertisements for shoes. Lichtenstein is known for his paintings inspired by comic books, but Rubin does an excellent job of mentioning his other work, such as his sculptures and landscape art. The insightful quotes and most of the references to his personal life serve only to explain how his art evolved or how he came to be in a particular place in the world. This approach is effective because the star here is the art and the process. The text (a bold typewriter font) is simple but descriptive and compelling. Lichtenstein's signature Benday dots appear in all of the page margins; even the page numbers are enclosed in circles. The back matter is exceptional as well, with a thorough glossary and index and an expansive list of additional resources. As in her Andy Warhol: Pop Art Painter (2006), Rubin presents an overview of a modern master with clear writing and an abundance of his eye-popping works, all framed on pages that mirror the artist’s signature use of primary colors and Benday dots. She begins with Lichtenstein’s early career as a middling expressionist, secretly making paintings based on comic books and advertising. She then details his techniques and explains that while his works might look mass-produced—like Warhol’s—Lichtenstein remained true to his painterly roots, painstakingly applying the dots and heavy lines to actual canvas. Nearly all of the works discussed are reproduced here, some accompanied by the comic panels that inspired them. While the book does inexplicitly maintain the distinction between “fine” art and “comic” art—Lichtenstein’s work being an example of the former for commenting on the latter—some readers, particularly graphic novel aficionados, may disagree. This well-sourced introduction to an artist with obvious kid appeal is ideal to open the floor to questions about the boundary between art and imitation. Grades 4-7. --Ian Chipman

WHAAM! says it all

I bought this book as a reference material for 5th graders when I was teaching a Pop Art lesson in each art and computer. I love the quality of the images and the information it provided for my students. The book is about 12" x 12" for the images are nice and big with lots of detail. I would recommend this book to anyone.

The reproductions of Lichtenstein's cartoon/comic-inspired art works are the immediate draw of this book for many youngsters, but the extensively researched text also provides older youths with insights into how a child who loves art becomes a mature working artist (including schooling, shows, side-jobs, setbacks, breakthroughs, and historical and contemporary inspirations). Rubin has also written books of comparable depth on artists Thiebaud, Warhol, Hopper, and O'Keeffe, but this one on Lichtenstein has the most "curb appeal."

The Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi represents the turning point, in Italian art, from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. The cycles of murals by Lorenzetti, Martini, Cimabue, and Giotto are among the icons of Western art, and somehow they still retain enormous emotional power. More than a score of recorded earthquakes had rattled the stones of the great Romanesque church in the 800 years since its construction began, but visitors over the centuries repeatedly remarked on the particular peacefulness of this monument to the saint who preached to sparrows and sultans alike. On September 26, l997, that peace was shattered by the worst quake in Assisi's history. A huge section of the Vault of the Evangelists, including Cimabue's St. Matthew and Giotto's St. Jerome, fell to the floor, killing four people. That afternoon, Ghigo Roli had completed documenting the vaults, and this book of crystalline, miraculously well-lighted photographs is the best, last record of the ceiling as a unified whole. The book contains a brief essay by Giorgio Bonsanti about the history of the church and its paintings, and a short but harrowing account by Roli of being there when the earthquake struck. In the back of the book are four stills from a video documentary that caught the massive crash of the vault. These are reproduced small, but their impact on the reader is huge, because of the preceding pages that make clear what has been lost forever. --Peggy Moorman

YA-For 670 years, the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi has stood as an architectural treasure, housing medieval masterpieces of Chimabue and Giotto. On September 26, 1997, an earthquake took the lives of four people and destroyed frescoes and decorative elements in the upper basilica. Photographer Ghigo Roli had spent many months taking more than 2000 detailed pictures of the frescoes for an upcoming publication. When disaster struck, he barely escaped with his life, leaving behind his camera, which was later found intact. The photographs in this book are the last taken of the now-destroyed vaults of the basilica and are the last record of their existence. Also shown are several dramatic photos taken during the earthquake and immediately after the dust had settled. The text is minimal; the reproductions are fascinating and poignant. There is a fine description of the history and art of the basilica by Bonsanti, an art historian. But it is the photographer's diary notes giving a minute-by-minute account of the indescribable destruction and terror that give readers a compelling picture of the events of that day. Together, Bonsanti and Roli's words remind readers of the fragility of human life and human creativity.

Everything it promises to be!

As an art history major who lived and studied in Italy, and saw this magnificent church before the earthquake, this book provides an excellent history. How wonderful to have photographic evidence of it's prior beauty, and the video clips of the destruction. I visited the church again this October (1998), and it was so wonderful to see the careful restoration. This book will not dissapoint those of you who want photographic history.
