Under the Second Empire in France, Cordier received several assignments in North Africa and there he completed "scientific" busts that were just as much works of art. His busts in silver or gilt bronze, onyx and coloured marble are delicate gems, reflecting Cordier's interest in other civilizations, most notably African. The Musee d'Orsay in Paris has organized an unprecedented international exhibition of Cordier's work, highlighting seventy-five sculptures and approximately forty ethnographic photographs. Filled with several texts on his life and work compiled by the exhibition's organizers, this book was created and based on the research by Jeanine Durand-Revillon for the Ecole du Louvre in 1980.

Facing The Other

An extraordinary companion book to exhibitions of the work of Sculptor Charles Cordier(1827-1905)as exhibited in 2004-05 @ Museums in Paris, Quebec and New York. It is the finest display of Ethnographic Art in the form of lifelike busts that I've ever witnessed.It forever emphasizes the universality of beauty and nobility displayed in the human form across all divisions of race and ethnicity.

Great Book, Amazing Sculptor

How do peoples from Africa and Asia really look? What is their traditional attire? In the second half of the 19th century Charles Cordier from France started making statues precisesly depictring ethnography of the Africa and The Far East. This is the only English Book I could find. To see two of his amazing statues here in the US, go to the Walters Museum in Baltimore to the 4th floor.
