The Geography of Lograire: Long poem, by Thomas Merton

Thomas Merton’s final testament as a poet is his most ambitious long work and a remarkable poetic achievement.

It was completed in the summer of 1968, a few months before he set out from Our Lady of Gethsemani monastery in Kentucky on the Asian journey from which he did not return. The text is as he left it. It lacks that final editing that he would have done in proof, but it is substantially a completed, self-contained work. Lograire, as with William Carlos Williams’s Paterson, is first of all a country of the imagination, but it is also a person––Merton himself––for its "geography" is the map, the inner choreography, of his mind. The charting in the poem is his search for self-location: where, and even how, does a man find himself in the geography of all men? Sections of personal experience are set against passages re-imagined from anthropological and historical texts, material that Merton chose for its character of myth to illustrate the general experience of mankind. The myths of Lograire form a mosaic of African legends, Mixtecart motifs and Mayan religious customs, the pantheism of the fanatical Ranters in 17th-century England, the records of an early arctic expedition and of Ibn Battuta, the 14th-century Arab traveler, the Cargo Cults of Melanesia and the Ghost Dances of the American Indians. "A poet," Merton wrote in his prefatory note to Lograire, "spends his life attempting to build or to dream the world in which he lives. But more than that he realizes that this world is at once his and everybody’s. It grows out of a common participation which is nevertheless recorded in authentically personal images. I have without scruple mixed what is my own experience with what is almost everybody else’s." Many modern poets have used history and myth in their work; what sets The Geography of Lograire apart is the invention of Merton’s method––his process for elevating fact to the level of myth. It is a complex technique of fractured syntax, multiple meanings; the distortion of dream, irony and parody.

Review
“Merton's wisdom literature has taken me into the ultimate cause of things.” (Sue Monk Kidd)

About the Author
Thomas Merton (1915-1968) entered the Cistercian Abbey of Gethsemani in Kentucky, following his conversion to Catholicism and was ordained Father M. Louis in 1949. During the 1960s, he was increasingly drawn into a dialogue between Eastern and Western religions and domestic issues of war and racism. In 1968, the Dalai Lama praised Merton for having a more profound knowledge of Buddhism than any other Christian he had known. Thomas Merton is the author of the beloved classic The Seven Storey Mountain.

The rebus, mind map and tabula rasa of a laughing monk
By William A. Lashley
Among authors who have shaped my understanding of the world, Thomas Merton is a perennial favorite of mine, especially his poetry like "The Geography of Lograire." I was in Provence not long ago, and thought of him as we drove past a Cistercian monastery - the Trappists are the "strict order" observers of the Rule of Benedict. Merton's decision to become a monk was the act that defined him for his audience, but reading him redefines one's ideas of what a life of contemplation can achieve. So I am once again returning to this marvelous man of letters. Thomas Merton's "book of directions" points across the breadth of his lifelong pursuit of the signs and scripts that shield and ferment the mysteries and truth(s) which embody god(s). Imagined and arranged as a landscape extending through the time and space of Mayans, Cargo Cultists, Ghost Dancers, Levelers and other millennial testaments old and new, this book of poetry is both "found" and invented. Merton is a clear eyed mystic, however, as well as the jester to power and a scorn when his dander gets up. His erudition is never showy, and the cryptic seals of the sources will pop open suddenly like a jack-in-the-box, the weighty subjects often as not taking flight in humor and a sheer delight in the human side of the spirit. It is wonderful to think that a life of silence and meditation could result in such a worldly grasp of this "geography" and it compares favorably with prose territories such as Yoknapatawpha County and Erewhon, although the path through Paterson and Gloucester is more likely to land you in Lograire. Physical and metaphysical circle round and sometimes dissolve in that "other" which is "neither" - the Void. The man had such respect for truth, whether unadorned or tarted up, veiled or resplendent, sheathed in stone or loose in the ether. If you have any interest in Merton as a literary figure at all, this book is a must read, a shorthand for all his interests, catholic and parochial, where he traveled and where he hoped to journey. Be forewarned, however, that repeated readings are sometimes the only means of navigating through this rich notional terrain.
