Gr 2 Up–After recovering from a near-fatal illness, Huneck established a chapel dedicated to the relationship between dogs and their owners on his property in Vermont. He originally wrote about it in The Dog Chapel: Welcome All Creeds, All Breeds. No Dogmas Allowed (Abrams, 2002). He begins this book with an update about the chapel 10 years after its foundation. The introduction is lengthy–six pages of fairly small print–but touching. It is illustrated with color photographs of the small chapel, its walls covered with notes and photos from dog lovers who visited or were influenced by Huneck's work. Following the introduction, the artist presents about 30 short sayings about dogs, one per spread, in large informal print and illustrates each one with his characteristic style. The sayings are clever and celebrate the richness that pets bring to life. They also offer comfort for those who might have lost a beloved canine friend. The illustrations are simple and solid, but brightly colored and have a gentle humor of their own. Stephen Huneck was an internationally acclaimed painter and sculptor who passed away in 2010. He was the owner of Stephen Huneck Galleries in St. Johnsbury, Vermont.

Charming, entertaining...will put a smile on your face!

What a wonderful, entertaining and charming book! "Even Bad Dogs Go To Heaven" has a really "eye catching" and wonderful cover featuring a Golden Retriever and inside features some really beautiful pictures of Dog Mountain in Vermont and the dog parties held there each year followed by classic Huneck artwork, whimsical drawings w/ witty captions that will make you smile, if not laugh out loud. Love it and would recommend it for children and adults and a great book to give as a gift. Enjoy it, I certainly did!!

simple but comforting

We recently unexpectedly lost the last of the three dogs we had while my children were growing up. My college aged daughter was devastated over the lose of her special (and sometimes wicked)dog, and grieved for a long time. I purchased this at the request of a friend. Simple for any age to understand, but it helped immensely. The information about the Dog Chapel was amazing. Thank you!

Must Have for Those Who've Loved and Lost

I bought this book for my dad when his Dane of nine years was put to sleep. The book carries a powerful message for dog lovers, and gives a sense of peace and reassurance: Yes, our dogs will go to heaven. Yes, there is meaning to their lives. More importantly, it reminds us what dogs really do for us, that they save us, forgive us, and teach us to love - And this book reminds us that when we do lose them, we shouldn't be afraid to do so again.
The first half of the book covers Stephen's work on the Dog Chapel, which is absolutely amazing, beautiful, and worth the money even without the second part. The second part I mentioned above makes this a must-have for any dog lover.
