Jerry Robinson is one of the living legends of American comics. As a member of the original Batman team, he created the first and most iconic of all supervillains, the Joker, and cocreated Robin, the archetypal sidekick. During the Golden and Silver Ages of comics, Robinson worked on every comic book genre there was, and brought to life his own super heroes such as London, Jet Scott, and Atoman. His artistry also extended beyond comic books into editorial cartooning and popular syndicated newspaper strips such as Still Life and Flubs & Fluffs, as well as magazine and book illustration, fine arts, academia, and humanitarian affairs. Robinson has been an influential teacher, an important curator of cartooning art exhibits, and a tireless champion of artists’ rights. This rich, fully illustrated collection of his work was written in collaboration with the artist himself.

So much more than The Joker
By Zack Davisson
Jerry Robinson was born. Created the Joker. Then Disappeared. That was about as much as I knew about the guy before I cracked open the cover of "Jerry Robinson: Ambassador of Comics." Oh how little I knew...
I did not know, for instance, that Jerry Robinson was the real-life inspiration for the scene in The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, where a group of artists packed into a small room, cooking eggs on bathroom wall tiles, while trying to finish a marathon project in just one weekend. I didn't know that Jerry Robinson taught for years at the School of Visual Arts and counted amongst his students Steve Ditko, Don Heck, Jack Abel, Marie Severin and Stan Goldberg. I didn't know that he wrote one of the first histories of comic art, The Comics: An Illustrated History of Comic Strip Art. I didn't know that he had a long career as a political cartoonist, doing the strips "Still Life" and "Life with Robinson." Or that he spent time in the New York theater scene, doing "Theater Life with Robinson" sketching some of Broadway's greatest performers.
Really, I knew nothing at all.
Which is why I enjoyed this book immensely. Much more than I thought I would. Jerry Robinson is so much more than "the guy who created The Joker," and has had a long and fascinating life and career. From his start at age 17, when Bob Kane called him over to ask who had drawn the illustrations on Robinson's jacket, only to be recruited onto the new comic "Batman" when Kane learned that Robinson was the artist, all through various stages of life in comics and out, as a teacher and an advertiser, a political activist and a critic. Or even now, when a still very active Jerry Robinson leads a crusade to get overseas artists exposure in major markets, or works in photography and oil painting.
And yes, The Joker is here too. Jerry Robinson not only drew comics, but he also had the foresight to keep his original work, and in "Jerry Robinson: Ambassador of Comics" you can see amazingly rare images such as his first ever sketch of The Joker, based off of a playing card, and original art work for some of his most famous Batman covers and interiors. This book is a magical museum for Batman fans.
But along with that is everything else: Robinson's theater work, his political cartoons, his photographs and paintings...this is really a celebration of an amazing man's life. And a treasure to read.

Learn to appreciate a legend.
By Hwy61Joe
As a huge fan of superhero comicbooks I knew Jerry Robinson as the creator of The Joker...and that's about it. I expected the origin of The Joker and Robinson's contributions to the early adventures of Batman to dominate this book. Boy was I wrong! Jerry Robinson is one of the most important figures in the history of the comics: comicbooks, comic strips, editorial cartoons, etc. Anyone who considers themselves a fan of the medium should buy this book and educate themselves about one of the legends of the industry! Full of fantastic pictures, illustrations, sketches and reproductions of strips and comic pages throughout.
