About the Author
Mick Hales is the photographer/author of Abrams’ Gardens Around the World 365 and Shakespeare in the Garden, and the photographer of The Book of Psalms, as well as of STC’s 212 Views of Central Park 212. He, author Nancy D’Oench, and coordinator Bonny Martin also collaborated on The Fine Art of Flower Arranging.
Nancy D’Oench is a writer, award-winning flower arranger, lecturer, flower-show judge, and longtime member of the Garden Club of America. She lives in Portland, Connecticut. Bonny Martin is a prolific gardener, arranger, lecturer, judge, and organizer of the major Garden Club of America flower show in Memphis, Tennessee, where she lives.

Remarkable Private Gardens

Elements of beautiful private American gardens, perhaps most previously unknown to readers, are shown in remarkable photos by Mick Hales, coordinated to be shown in their peak by Bonny Martin, with text by Nancy D'Oench. All ninety gardens are owned by women (or occassionally couples), members of the Garden Club of America. Rather than have the gardens presented on their own, the book is divided into twelve chapters and photos from various gardens are used to illustrate garden characteristics such as views, walks, water, color, containers, etc. Perhaps there is only mis-step in the selection of beautiful photos, the view of a portion of Ms Martin's own garden showing a slip-shod display of bonsai on boards resting on concrete blocks; the other photos are very inspiring. Ms D'Oench's text is only o.k.; information is often lacking in the captions. Still, it is a very attractive coffee table book that would make a good gift for friends and relatives with a green thumb, or those who wish they had a green thumb.

Enduring Garden Classic

This is a classic garden coffee table book, compiled in 2008 by The Garden Club of America and rich with photography (by Mick Hales), gorgeous visual stimulation, and delight. The Garden Club of America comprises 200 local clubs with more than 17,000 members; in 1987, the Club donated 25,000 images of great American gardens to the Smithsonian Institution, which donation documents more than 5,500 American gardens and landscapes. Then the Club sought to open 90 of its members’ most beautiful gardens for a new photography project and this work was the sumptuous result, the best of the very best.
It is divided into twelve chapters, beginning logically with garden entrances, and going on through such visual garden topics as pathways, water, color, woodlands, and so on. My favorite part of the book was the gorgeous middle chapters: water, borders, and color. I will never tire of turning these pages over and over, especially on winter evenings when the gardener’s eye is starved for color and aching to wander through dream-like landscapes and perspectives of gardens that have been beautifully realized by like-minded gardeners with great gifts of space, time, and taste.
The substantial captions for each picture are replete with locational and other information about the given photo, but it is almost better to go through this handsome volume, at least the first time, and only take in the rich images for the visual feast they are. Rustic and urban, formal and informal, tropical and xeric, intimate corners and vast woodlands—there is much here for every taste and interest, and for every gardener. It will spark many new design ideas, garden solutions, and suggestive plant combinations for every gardener, unless your garden is already perfect, a laughable suggestion to nearly every serious gardener.

A book only for rich people with huge estates

I bought this book because the name includes "Private and Personal." That is why I was expecting secret gardens and private retreats.
Instead, GARDENS PRIVATE & PERSONAL contains photos of huge estates and the expansive, expensive gardens of rich people. If you are a millionaire with many acres, this book is for you. If you are a regular person seeking to create a garden sanctuary, do NOT waste your money on this book.
A better buy would be GARDEN RETREATS by Barbara Ashman. Now THERE'S a great book for examples of secret gardens and serene garden sanctuaries.
