About the Author
Thomas Merton (1915-1968) entered the Cistercian Abbey of Gethsemani in Kentucky, following his conversion to Catholicism and was ordained Father M. Louis in 1949. During the 1960s, he was increasingly drawn into a dialogue between Eastern and Western religions and domestic issues of war and racism. In 1968, the Dalai Lama praised Merton for having a more profound knowledge of Buddhism than any other Christian he had known. Thomas Merton is the author of the beloved classic The Seven Storey Mountain.
Scholar and poet, Bonnie Thurston is a founding member and past president of the International Thomas Merton Society. She is an ordained minister of the Christian Church.

More on Merton's writings

This gift edition book "On Eastern Meditation" (small but full of selective quotes from some of Thomas Merton's writings) is a nugget you will want to hold on to. Each passage quoted is brief and listed under various headings which are particular to Merton's life and writings, such as: Landscape, Meditation, Fasting, Solitude, Enlightenment, Non-violence, and many others. I know of no other book of this kind focusing so intently on Merton and his thirst for Eastern meditation, and all are succinctly presented. At first look I felt disappointed; in some respects it did not seem to carry the weight from other reviewers. But as I took time to ponder this precious nugget I found myself within the man (Merton) and his insatiable desire to learn more about Eastern religions. Amazon did well to offer this amazing collection. Merton lovers will appreciate this fine collection.

An overview of Eastern mediatation by a Western spiritual master

Thomas Merton was one of the undisputed spiritual masters of our time. His spirituality went beyond the Western, and penetrated to the very core of reality. In this reprint of his classic text, he examines meditation practices specific to the Eastern world. While written from a Christian perspective, this book is non-sectarian. It is not a wholesale endorsement of Eastern meditation; rather, it is an explanation to non-Easterners what exactly is Eastern meditation. Merton, the quintessential seeker after truth, did not let the fact that a mediation practice might not be specifically Christian. He strives to identify what is most essential to this practice, and to in fact bring it to the West. This book may in fact be more valuable to many Westerners than those of Suzuki, Nhat Hanh, etc., if they are able to accept the Latin orientation of the author.
That said, you may enjoy the author's more famous The Seven Storey Mountain. For a historical look of the interaction between Buddhism and the West, check out The Awakening of the West: The Encounter of Buddhism and Western Culture.

a true Christian mystic that grasps the Perennial philosophy

A great read. No dislikes. The only drawback is that it does not embellish on the different practices for silence; however, each and every word is a practice in itself. This book exudes love. 4 stars
