About the Author
Paul Tapponnier is a professor of physics and a director of the tectonics laboratory at the Institut de Physique du Globe in Paris. In 2005, he was the only French scientist to become a member of the National Academy of Sciences in the U.S. He lives in Paris.
Photographer and author Kevin Kling is a member of both the Royal Geographical Society of London and the U.S. Society of Women Geographers. He lives in Paris.

Wonders never cease.

I was absolutely captivated by the scores of beautiful images of vast terrains. The stark mountains are made even more imposing by the inclusion of detailed foreground. I kept finding myself wishing to be at these exotic locals and envious of the natives. This is a stunning book that goes way beyond the typical Nat Geo treatment made up of super saturated color and perfect framing. The introduction states that the approach of this book is not that of a climber or hiker but rather of a geologist. It covers the life span and identity of mountains. I never gave a thought to the 'life span' of a mountain and certainly was ignorant of any 'identity' till now. Such a different perspective only made my experience richer.
The reason why I gave it only 4 stars is that the great bulk of the book covers Central and East Asia with only a small portion covering Africa and South America. I totally expected coverage of Alaska and Europe.
For the price that this book fetches in Amazon Marketplace you cannot go wrong in its purchase. Books such as this broadens horizons and deepens ones appreciation for this wonderful earth.

Not what I was looking for

Let me say first that, despite the two stars, this is not a "bad" book. In fact, it may be perfect for some. I just think the author simply had different intentions from what I was looking for. When I saw a book titled "Mountains", with the qualities of a very substantial size and an abundance of photographs, I had to order it. But, after great anticipation on my part, the book was a huge letdown. If you are looking for a photographic array of glorious mountain vistas, forests of conifers, snow-capped peaks, lakes and wildlife, this is not the one for you. There are indeed some beautiful photos like this, but proportionally speaking they are very few. Instead, the majority of pictures are rather barren-looking. Of course, barren can be beautiful (case in point, the Arctic and Antarctic); but the subject matter has so much more to offer. Also, and no offense to humanity, but there was simply too much culture and civilization depicted, while I wanted to be awed by the mountains themselves. Finally, how a mammoth pictorial on this subject can completely ignore the plethora of breath-taking beauty offered by the Alps, Rockies, Carpathians, Cascades, Alaskans, etc., is beyond me. This book offers only Asia, a little South America and a smidge of Africa. Looking for any mountain views of Europe or North America? You won't find it here.
