Juvenile Court: A Judge's Guide for Young Adults and Their Parents, by Leora Krygier

Each year, millions of teens are cited for various offenses, ranging from traffic violations to criminal trespassing. Regardless of the offense, the majority of these young people arrive in court for the first time, usually unfamiliar with the judicial process and unprepared to stand before a judge.

In this no-holds-barred guide, Leora Krygier, a judge for almost 20 years, provides teens with important information about how to prepare for a court appearance. Krygier addresses the most common types of offenses committed by young people and helps decipher their citations. This instructive guide gives teens and their parents an overview of the juvenile court justice system, then takes the reader through the entire process―from the moment a citation is written, to arraignment, possible trial, and disposition of their case.

Drawing on examples, stories, and excerpts from actual letters and essays written by teens, Juvenile Court: A Judge's Guide for Young Adults and Their Parents de-mystifies the judicial process and help teens get back on the right track. The book also offers no-nonsense tips aimed to help teens avoid future citations.

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up—A Los Angeles Superior Court judge details citations and situations that may result in a teenager's arrest and/or trial. From speeding tickets to curfew violations to drug- and alcohol-related issues, Krygier explains court terminology and due process in a clear and concise, though somewhat dry manner. The highlighted tips on many pages offer sound advice on issues such as how to dress for court, how to address a judge, and how to stay out of trouble in the first place. Each chapter begins with statements from real teenagers ruminating on their court experiences. Many of them are choppy, confusing, and grammatically questionable, and they might well distract readers. However, the text itself provides a solid, honest view of the juvenile justice system. The book includes a helpful compendium of documents that one might come across in the judiciary process.—Kelly McGorray, Glenbard South High School, Glen Ellyn, IL

From Booklist
A veteran juvenile-court judge with the Los Angeles Superior Court, Krygier presents a detailed insider’s look at what young people can expect of the judicial process. Following a brief overview of the philosophy and purpose of the juvenile court, Krygier gives detailed descriptions of the most common types of juvenile offenses, the citation process, and possible sanctions. Krygier also offers practical advice on how to prepare for a court appearance; documentation to bring; appropriate attire, speech, and body language; and assembling character references. The dry text does not make for compelling reading, but the writing is accessible, clear, and detailed. The layout and design are unappealing but functional; sidebar tips offer readers sensible advice. Legal terms defined in an extensive glossary appear in bold in the text. Appendixes include a list of Web sites and examples of common juvenile-court documents. Overall, this is an excellent resource for teens in trouble or those otherwise interested in the process. Grades 7-12. --Ed Sullivan

Review
Krygier is clearly a youth advocate and writes the book from a place of care and concern for teens who find themselves in complicated, unfamiliar situations....Although individual laws and juvenile court systems differ from state to state, Krygier's information still feels thoroughly discussed. Her approach is serious and straightforward, but remains highly readable as a guide or a reference manual. (VOYA, February 2009)

From speeding tickets to curfew violations to drug- and alcohol-related issues, Krygier explains court terminology and due process in a clear and concise...manner. The highlighted tips on many pages offer sound advice on issues such as how to dress for court, how to address a judge, and how to stay out of trouble in the first place.... The text itself provides a solid, honest view of the juvenile justice system. The book includes a helpful compendium of documents that one might come across in the judiciary process. (School Library Journal, March 2009)

This title is a sensible guide to scan yourself and put in your repertoire for instant access. You could save a life. Be ready. (Library Thing)

Krygier provides an overview of the entire juvenile criminal justice process, from the initial police detainment through court appearances and sentencing. She gives specific advice on how to best make one's case to the court....Tips on preparing for court hearings and eye-opening excerpts from actual letters written to the court by teens about their personal experiences in the system are invaluable. Presented in a straightforward and crisp manner, this is a crucial reference guide; but it can also serve to warn youths, and their parents, about the consequences of breaking the law. Essential Reading for Every Parent and Teen
By Carolyn Howard-Johnson
I have never seen a book quite like Juvenile Court by Leora Krygier. It truly is in a class of its own. What sets it apart is the value this book offers to teens and families of teens, people who assume they will never spend a day in court, people who normally go about their lives above the fray. Those people who may suddenly find their lives turned inside out by a summons to juvenile court.

As I was reading this book, I kept thinking that this it should be a text used in every high school health and psychology class in the nation. There are so many myths surrounding minor teen infractions and more serious crimes, too. Many of them have to do with what happens in that inner sanctum, the courtroom.

It also occurred to me that if and, yes--when--disaster hits for parents and teen alike (that day they face a call to court), they probably won't be thinking straight enough to go to the library so they can face the experience confidently and deliberately. More than likely, they wouldn't be aware that a practical book on the subject--written by an experienced juvenile court judge--exists.

Parents and teens may, of course, think of hiring an attorney and that certainly isn't a bad idea. But if they had a modicum of knowledge about what lies before them (to say nothing of the money required for that kind of assistance), that hiring and the legan process that follows would be easier.

Looking back on my own children's teen years, I wish I had a resource like Juvenile Court in my library at home. As it turned out, I never needed it. But isn't it the job of a parent to prepare themselves to guide their children through the most trying experiences? Most parents prepare themselves for the eventuality of teen pregnancy, as an example, but I doubt many would feel confident about their parenting skills if a call to court should ever come.

One of the things I found most enlightening about Krygier's book was the quotes she included from teens, their naiveté, their need for support, their passion, their willingness to learn from their experience. The quotes came from letters Krygier has assigned as part of the retraining process she is so passionate about.

The other thing that struck me is the tenderness (and toughness) of this judge so willing to reach out to do what she can to fill the huge gap in knowledge destined to make life harder on a growing group of parents and young adults.

An Invaluable Tool
By pokey
I am a big believer in self-help books and this book, Juvenile Court: A Judge's Guide for Young Adults and Their Parents, is a practical guide with tremendous value to teens and their prents. I have not seen another book about juvenile court addressed to parents and teens that explains the judicial system in such an easy to understand manner. It is an invaluable tool not only for parents and their teens, but for anyone in the mental health professions including, social workers, guidance counselors, substance abuse counselors psychologists and psychiatrists. Professionals who work with teens are sure to value this book as both a practical guide for their clients and as a preventative measure, as the vignettes recounted by Krygier illustrate how easy it is for teens to "cross the line" through rebellious and experimental (mis)behavior. This guide also warns of consequences with real-life examples from peers, and teens are more apt to pay attention to their peers than to adults. Any parent with a child in trouble or heading into trouble, should buy this book. It is clearly less expensive than hiring a lawyer and this book will provide information of great worth for all who are involved in the juvenile court system.

Great book!
By SuLe
Leora Krygier's book does double-duty in my life as a school principal and the mother of a teenage boy. The real-life examples from actual teens that have appeared before Krygier are effective teaching tools. Knowing what kind of behaviors can land a teen in juvenile court provides a "heads-up" for teens tempted by friends to participate in risky and/or illegal behaviors. Should a teen get a citation to appear in juvenile court, reading this book and following Krygier's advice is an absolute must. Juvenile Court: A Judge's Guide for Young Adults and Their Parents offers much more than common sense, something many teens lack, it offers a way to turn a troubled life around while there is still an opportunity to do so.
